My question is, why does Polukranos even exist? It should have been a rare when in comparison to Hythonia. They should have made it do something completely different, or be able to "fight" multiple creatures (despite what the article today on mtg daily states, they could have made it work.) Or do something completely different, like have an acidic slime ability for each counter added. I'm a little disappointed with the hydra after seeing this.
Just because Polukranos comes 2 turns earlier... oh wait, we're talking about the mana-ramping green color, so that would be 3 or even 4 turns earlier, considering black itself doesn't have many ways to ramp besides Crypt Ghast in Standard.
Gorgon's effect is on turn 8 considering you always draw a land. Polukranos has versatility by placing as many counters as you're able to pay, maybe stupid ramping mana with some weird combo and voilá; in same scenario as the Gorgon, he gets exactly the same counters amount, but only blows up up to three creatures. Maybe that's not sexy, but is because of the versatility. Maybe you only make Monstruos 2 and kill a 2 power level dude or 2 weenies.
I don't see Polukranos as a bad card, they are totally different, intended for different things. Obviously Monstruosity 3 demi-wrath is more powerful, but 8 mana is a lot indeed. If you're able to get mana quicker, the gorgon seems like a better option, but a 5/5 for 4 mana isn't something to laugh about either.
I don't know, I could see her in a scavenge heavy deck with mana dorks Crypt Ghast, Varolz, the Scar-Striped, Lotleth Troll. One sided board wipe? Are there cards like that? It wouldn't be tremendously difficult to get her out turn 4. With the regenerating and recurring golgari cards a one sided board wipe can be devastating.
I think people are underestimating creatures that have fat butts and death touch.
It just doesn't feel like she was pushed enough in the cost area for being a legendary mythic. 6 for a 4/6 deathtouch is on curve and an 8 mana activation is about the same power as the other monstrosities.
She does what she does just fine, but a little slow, making her a one of, late game finisher. Instead of a midrange stabilizer that black needs the most.
****ty card, goes to the the $1 mythic bucket, will never be played in Standard, Modern or any proper format, will see ofc play in casual and EDH i guess, but apart from that, a waste of paper. And i had such great expectations for the art...

Try her in a different context. Ice cream tastes bad when its one the ground. Try it fresh out of the freezer. Shoes work great on the ground, pretty bad tasting in the freezer.

I fear I won't have much time to play Magic these days.
I get to watch worlds develop around me.
I get to watch great leaders, terrible oppressors, and trend setters rise and fall.
Limited, Standard, Modern, everything is a different playing field I feel I can observe, but will not actually touch.
I look forward to the stories I will hear.
And more so to the ones I will watch unfold first hand.

I saw this art spoiled and thought Glissa was going to be reprinted with it. Apparently Chris Rahn only felt the need to flip her art the other way. Oh well. Meh card.

You, sir, have not tried a shoe ice cream. I works neither in the freezer or the ground.
That's kinda what I'm feeling about this gorgon, by the way. It's kinda meant to be a johnny/timmy card, but personally it didn't hit me as hard.
This card is fine. In EDH the cost of monstrosity is literally nothing. With cards such as Urborg and Coffers it is very easy to achieve. The art fits a commander too. IMO. Nevertheless if I was into expensive Gorgons i'd play her. Lol.
On a seperate note;
Not everything is made for tournament play, it is about time some of you tryhards learn to understand that. It is getting very annoying to see all the complaining, whining, and crying whenever I click a spoiler thread. And I'm pretty certain that I am not the only one who thinks that.
- Hiss.
Agreed, and I think Monstrosity is an underrated ability if you have the mana to use it. People are probably forgetting that it can be used as an instant, plus if you have blink effects like Conjurer's Closet active in play then you can abuse it. In EDH that is.
Thinking more about this Gorgon, if Mono Black Control is a thing in Standard post rotation, and by the looks of it there is some possibility, this lady could be an effective finisher along with Erebos. That Shrine to Nyx land can allow ramp up to 8 black mana pretty darn quickly as well. Just a thought...
What he actually said is that this card might be better in the context of another format.
In EDH her monstrosity is not hard to reach and have a extremely powerful effect.

+1 for dropping that truth post.
As for the card; I agree that this card was probably made with EDH in mind, as far as I can tell, while reading through the thread there are some folks here that understand that. It's nice to see that folks still enjoy a nice game on the kitchen table.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.

Of course, if the card actually is totally awesome and clearly standard-worthy, you will still get:
"Oh no, another moneygrab mythic costing 200$ a playset!"
"How is this mythic/rare?"
"I am totally sick of this power creep"
"Magic is dead to me because REASONS!!!"
And now I want you to blow up...THE OCEAN (of whiny standard players)

Blowing up is too quick, try using drain-o or gasoline + match. Rabid hamsters are also a nice touch too.
But I am happy to see a new Gorgon though. I hope to see a little gorgon tribal action soon.
