Seriously though, this guy is pretty much gonna be a 9/9 the next turn you play him. Can easily blank new Thundermaw, which is probably going to be a thing soon. Cheap beats that happen to play nicely with certain gods (*cough* Nylea *cough*) and can be both offensive and defensive. Love it.
I suspect lots and lots of Attack on Titan alters for this one.
Wow. This set is oozing with flavor, not since Innistrad have I seen so much flavor and lore. I have been waiting years and years for a greco-roman sort of set like this and wotc has delivered. The art is incredible and I happy first pick in draft and may even make its way to standard sideboard if fliers become a thing.
This is pretty good.
Only thing is, is that this takes up 2 turns to get a 9/9 and possibly kill a flier.
I'm not sure if that's worth it or not.
He'll probably see play, one of the playable monstrous creatures.

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring
I think this is a good, necessary card. A 6/6 for 5 is appropriately costed, and it is a specific hate card, which ensures other pushed cards can be kept in check. I dig it.
By itself, this might not see a ton of play (granted, it helping devotion is swell).
Standard: Superfriends!
Legacy: Nic Fit / Pod
Pauper: Delvar; Tron; Flicker Stuff
Commander: Riku ("Some weird doubple spell thing happened"); Keranos ("I did a Gatherer search for 'random' and 'flip a coin.'"); Superfriends!
All of these monsterous cards just seem way too slow. Mono red, Boros, and naya aggro decks make it just impossible that any of them see play outside of the Dragon and the lion 2 drop so far. Even if devotion is good (it isn't. Asks you to play right into wraths or a giant mortars sweep).
So disregarding haste strategies, let's compare Kalonian to this guy.
-Kalonian comes down as a 4/4 trample, swings next turn for 8/8 and trample.
-Colossus comes down as a 6/6 reach, swings next turn as a 9/9 and kills a flyer.
Now on the second attack, Kalonian definitely overtakes the Colossus, but on respective turns they drop, the Colossus is actually a little less vulnerable (it doesn't get hit by mortars), and killing a flyer when he becomes Monstrous is always helpful. Hell he can stop the new dragon the turn he comes down. I feel like his costs are more indicative of running him in monogreen more often than the hydra who is very splashable, considering and that it just fine.
Kalonian takes far less investment and is obviously a better card, but this guy is quite solid and will probably see play.
Best thing about Mayael being your commander; you ALWAYS get new goodies.
Mayael decks sport WAY better cards. Most have good ETBs (Titans, Avenger) or really shine with Lightning Greaves (Steel Hellkite, Godsire). I will never want to play Arbor Dude in my Mayael deck... Rather play Cloudthresher...
The jolly green giant seems playable, definitely better than the red giant. Nice that he doesn't occupy the same spot as Garruk, Caller of Beasts on the curve. I think monogreen midrange can accommodate this guy.
Yes, because a GREEN creature with greater power/toughness than a vanilla test has never existed. Ever.
Agreed. And with 3 required green in the cost, it can get more.
Then again, with some of the other monsters in the set, it seems that Wizards is finally blowing that out of the water too and giving it to every color. Ember Swallower, for instance. Someone bring back that old Calvin pissing avatar, but make it the Theros symbol onto the pie.
He will make red players feel bad if he is on the field and they have a Stormbreath Dragon in hand. And a 6/6 is far out of Reach for a single burn spells.
Also did you guys notice how many good big creatures there are. I dont have the feeling that aggro will be so popular with so many bombs around.

Level 1 Judge
I write flavor articles for RoxieCards.
I play and judge at Giga Bites Cafein Marietta, Georgia.
He becomes so big and enraged that he grabs the nearest flying bystander.
