The Monstrous also becomes relevant against Sphinx's rev builds too. Quite a significant proportion of the relevant flyers in Modern are white so this guy forces damage through a lot of the time.
I'm struggling to think of one that is not white.
And Pestermite/Coralhelm don't really count.
Yea people are underrating pro white a bit. Tons of popular removal, especially from control is in white. This card is a house against selesnya, esper, UW control and such. Mortars is it's weakness but thats sorcery so you at the least get 4 points in.
I love this thing. I'm more than happy to trade 1/1 for protection against white. And against control, it won't be too hard to get the mana to make him monstrous.

Protection from White is a more relevent ability than +1/+1 and Thundermaw's ETB effect. It can't be blocked by Lingering Souls, Restoration Angel, Angel of Serrenity, no matter when this card comes down. Not to mention it can block them forever.
It can't be disrupted by Detention Sphere, Angel of Serenity, Arrest, Selesnya Charm, Chain to Rocks, or anything with white in its CMC, and because it has 4 toughness, most burn misses it as well.
The only card that deals with it that doesn't also deal with Thundermaw Hellkite is Mizzium Mortars, but at least the dude gets the first hit in.
You'll notice I didn't say he was worse, just not as big (which he isn't to start). In terms of power, they are very close. Being immune to Azorius Charm and detention Sphere, as well as blocking Obzedat and Blood Baron all day, means this guy could be a seriously player in Standard.
And then you go over the top with his Monstrosity ability and it all goes bananas. This might be one of the best cards spoiled so far.
What do you guys expect value to be, even after settling let's say.I want to buy a play set now for 60. It's just I have no idea if that could become a real investment. Also, considering tearing apart my G/W deck to make gruull. I think voice is just going down now and I'm sad.
I hope this doesn't turn out to be good enough to see play. As a dragon collector, it sucks when Wizards actually makes a Standard-playable dragon. ><;
This^,
thundermaw was bad enough - if they start doing this regularly my budget will suffer.
Yes. I didn't even dare to hope for another playable 5cmc dragon.
Just like Blood Baron of Vizkopas last ability, the monstrous part of this card is mostly trinket text. A 4/4 flying, haste, pro white wouldn't feel mythic, so they had to add something. If it isn't blocked, you'll get 8 in before you can inflate this thing, and that's if you make every land drop. You should have won by then.
But yeah, this is great, I love it. I'd say it's nowhere near Thundermaw Hellkite*, but that might be okay. Thundermaw had a case of Baneslayer syndrome, where it could win games by itself without any setup required, and the meta might be slowing down. As long as big blue/black flyers won't be a huge thing, you can sign me up for four of these.

When I hit my 3000 post mark, I'm gone for good.
Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.
If you can hit 7 mana in standard games he should see play but otherwise he is a hasty Air Elemental with a sometimes relevant removal protection. Don't think thats cutting it.
u know that haste makes him a just better do you? its not "just" an air elemental with haste.
also the protection will be relavant a lot of times.
and its not only vs removal. ever tried to handle bloodbaron of vizkopa with an aggro deck? mostly you just cant.
but this guy can just block him endlessly if you need to.

I don't think I've really seen Thundermaw Hellkite used in modern much. Like, most decks with red in it are more content with just killing people at the point of a game in which you'd actually summon a big beatstick.

Easy solution. Ask yourself if you're buying it to invest, or if you're buying it to hopefully have access to them, throw them into winning decks and profit that way.

It's no thundermaw but a decent dragon nonetheless. The odd protection being thrown around at mythic rare is peculiar. That said has the potential to be a huge force in constructed decks.
This is going to be super expensive online due to block even if it isn't a big deal in standard. There's still's a lot of card to go but currently the only real removal spell in the block is chained which this has protection from. The only answer white has right now is Elspeth's - ability. All the other colors need to really go out of the way to kill this guy. I hope black gets a doom blade style card. All of this is once again meant to be taken in the context of a new block format not standard.
This is just disgusting in every way possible. Was celebrating the fact that Thundermaw Hellkite was gone from standard and now we get an even more overpowered version? Along with ramp in G/R capable of casting it on turn two? So much for post rotation Standard being something I was looking forward to...
The protection from white is just insulting. I guess Bant and Azorius control aren't even going to be decks anymore. Unless we start running jank like claustrophobia or plummet...
I'm starting to get very annoyed with how overpowered Gruul is looking in Theros. Red now has the best god and red and green have the best god weapons. Red and green ramp allow five drops on turn two with Burning Tree Emissary and Nykthos. Three out of the eight multi-colored cards so far are Gruul...one guild getting almost half of the multi-colored stuff seems really far, and that's not even counting Satyr Hedonist. And now red has this buffed version of a card that never should have been allowed to see print in the first place, not to mention yet another Gruul planeswalker, which happens to be blatantly overpowered.
I'm just sick of it. Wizards really does seem to just be catering to faceroll creature beatdown players and Timmy's. Seems like it's go aggro or go home...

A playable dragon in Legacy? Call me shocked, but pro-white is huge in that format since removal is mostly of that color. The other relevant fliers are also all smalle (Clique, Delver), and D&T can't touch this ever. This IS good. At 5 it will be hard to find a home for this, but it's as relevant as a 5-drop creature can be in that format.
I honestly dont think this card is that good. At best I can see people running 1 or maybe 2. It's definetely no Thundermaw Hellkite. Thundermaw was basically a guarateed 5 damage that could kill 1/1 flying tokens. Thundermaw hellkite was also playable in any midrange deck that ran red because it was pretty much a win condition in itself. I doubt any creature based red deck will ever make use of it's monstrosity also since 7 mana is just too much unless you're playing a ramp deck. All I see is a 4/4 haste flying creature with pro white.
I don't know how people can possibly think this is not obviously better than Thundermaw Hellkite. Are you guys seriously living in a world where non-white fliers are more common than white removal, or that one more power and toughness is more relevant than not getting Azorius Charmed?
It's an even more overpowered version of what was already a pretty overpowered card.
