Seems ridiculously complicated. Most of the people at the Dragon's Maze prerelease I went had no idea what the guilds were and just asked for colors. I can't imagine that there will be a lot of people who will go to all nine events and keep track of all the materials that you will apparently need to hold onto for six months.

If by ridiculously complicated you mean ridiculously AWESOME, then yes!
They could quite easily have given us none of this extra stuff.
The fact that it's there, regardless of complication, is to be celebrated. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth dude, this is a bonus, not something to complain about!

well they will give to you the hero' cards at pre-realise so you can take 2 hero cards of this and at the game day fight the hydra...
These hero cards will only be played at the game day... and only to play against the bosses.
why complain?
If you don't want to take a path on this then you lose nothing.
At the end of Jorney to Nyx you will be able to play with the boss and take the spoils without having all the hero cards ( if you are luck)...
and the boxes at the pre realise will be mono colored ( 1 pack) so there it is.

Of course by "all those materials" you mean <10 magic cards, since the only thing that you need other than your normal cards are any additional hero cards you get from completing the stages of the quest.
Since its so complex I'll break it down for you:
Play at the pre-release = get a hero card
Go to release and solve the puzzle on the wall = get a hero card
Go to game day and beat the challenge deck = get a hero card
Keep hero cards in folder for next part of the set.

I wouldn't exactly call it a "gift horse." It's a fairly blatant marketing ploy in order to get us to attend all 3 Theros release events (prerelease, launch party, and Game Day), rather than just 1 or 2.

no
you could attend to the pre realise and take the death touch one then at the Hydra' Challenge play a Rdw with alot of first strike dudes. ( for exemple)
This is the game-play format where your Hero Cards act as buffs you start the game with, and choosing which ones work best against the Hydra's abilities and with your own deck is a fun problem in and of itself.
I don't think that I have a favorable opinion on this. The gimmicks are mostly there for noobs, so why would you have something that's so complicated that they can't even begin to comprehend it? I mean, most of them can barely even play magic.

If that's your "casual," what on earth is required for "formal," a butler in livery shuffling the decks whilst a pianist plays Brahms in front of a tapestry?
I don't like the "here have your bomb." aspect of the prereleases, there should be some skill behind making a sealed deck and giving you your (most likely) color/primary color is a real shame to me. I'm still going to play in the prereleases because they're a lot of fun, just don't like that they're doing a guild pack esqu event again.

I really liked the previous gimmicks, but the fact that this requires a constructed deck means I won't participate, which is disappointing. That being said, I'm glad we get a special booster and playable promo again.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.

Get used to it, the comment from Aaron was that this is the way WOTC wants to have prerelease events going forward.

Sealed is one of the least skill intensive formats in Magic, taking out some of the variance isn't necessarily a bad thing.
I'm not exactly a spike and I think this sucks. I don't mind stuff like the guild packs. Heck, give everyone a mono color hero to put in their deck. All the gimmicks like running the maze were completely forgotten during the Dragon's maze prerelease. We all got our buttons and wanted to play with new cards.
As long as it doesn't change the actual game play, I'll just give my card to a kid who wants to fight the monster.

It beats not pulling any bombs at all. It's not like it takes skill to pull good cards out of a pack. And when you know that people will be playing with bombs you can plan ahead and adapt.
So you don't just get packs to build from, you have to limit yourself to a color(s) based on the "Path" you pick? And jump through a whole bunch of silly hoops, for what? A useless online achievement?
Hey WoTC, you missed a classic trope: Usually when the hero completes his quest, he actually gets something for his efforts.

It was specifically mentioned in the article there will be a physical reward at the end of the ninth quest:
And so the Hero's Path continues—each arc in the three sets of the block starts with the Prerelease, continues with the Launch Weekend, and finishes at the Game Day with a new Challenge Deck. Your quests will take you to realms unknown and to heights undreamed of, but, in the end, if you are worthy, your deeds will be remembered in the Hall of Heroes, a listing of all Heroes of Theros who completed all nine quests. (Don't worry, there's a special physical reward for completing the last quest as well, so even if you join in late, you'll be able to partake in this legendary adventure.)
Also, don't care what anyone thinks, I'm excited for this like a young girl with her first boyfriend.
That is right. Instead of promos (Remember MPR anyone? They were replace with what?) We get achievements that do nothing. Look at the achievements for M14. They were impossible to do and when you pass the codes to Planeswalker points you didn't earn much
You actually went online and put the codes in? Everyone at my LGS for the DGM one just threw the cards in the trash.
i seriously don't understand all the complains... i personally think this is awesome fun.
and do you know what the best part is? if you don't like it or are not interested in doing it...you don't do it! "At Theros Game Day, in addition to the regular Standard tournament, there will be a unique game-play experience available called a Challenge Deck."

I like how they're tapping on people's shoulders to get them to play in more than one pre/release event, I'm guessing the numbers show that people only show up to one of them and don't play in the others...
On the other hand it gets me thinking about how they're desperate to shake up Solitaire.
"Noobs" aside, I bet this is WOTC trying hard to alienate a lot of people from the prereleases in a kind of eugenicistic meddling with the metagame. They have a vision of what they want the prerelease to be, and it could well be that Spike is not welcome in them.
Really? WotC gameplan to alienate a lot of people? Just because some people don't like it?
Here's their gameplan: attract players, sell packs, profit.
MtG Salvation is no place for heroes, only whiners & complainers, apparently.
As someone who is a HUGE fan of Joseph Campbell & Greek mythology, I want to do this, but alas, I work overnight and don't need to be requesting so many weekends off in a row just to get all these achievements.
