As the popularity of Modern has continued to rise, Wizards of the Coast has made the decision to retire the Extended format. Too many formats can fracture a player base, so we’ve decided to focus efforts on our other Constructed formats.
Tournament organizers will be able to sanction Extended events up to August 7, 2013, but after that there will be no more sanctioning of events for Extended. Events sanctioned before August 7, 2013, will be able to be run until October 8, 2013.
Magic Online will be removing Extended as a supported format after their downtime on August 7, 2013.

Commander: Riku ("Some weird doubple spell thing happened"); Keranos ("I did a Gatherer search for 'random' and 'flip a coin.'"); Superfriends!
The format has been dead since the change to 4 blocks. 7 blocks was massively different to Standard (although very close to Modern in a lot of ways), 4 was just too similar.
The whole Extended issue is just nuts. I'm not surprised this happened at all and wasn't really a fan of the format but I was excited when it was announced as an FNM format. External forces were working against it though. SCG gained a firm grasp on NA's Legacy scene and dueling communities of playtesters were trying out prototype eternal formats to "improve" it. I prefer it to Standard because like most people I like having a large card pool but Wizards loves making money and so nothing is replacing Standard as the flagship format.
I have some good memories of playing The Rock and Oath in Extended way back when Spiritmonger was still considered "broken"; but, that's as far as the nostalgia goes.
Heh, I was just talking with a former player this afternoon about how extended is a dead format despite being sanctionable. Good to know it's official now.
The only reason I ever had interest in Extended was because it was awesome when I began playing Magic in Shards block.... and that environment is pretty much what Modern's timeline is now. When they halved Extended it was pretty much move to EDH and/or hope for "Over-Extended" (which became Modern).
Perhaps in another 7 years when Modern is significantly different they'll reintroduce Extended.
The last time I played it was at GP Philadelphia like 5 years ago. Actually, for some reason there were a few local places that ran PTQ's and GPT's in Extended and it really bothered me.

The only reason people played extended was when pro tour invites or gigantic prizes were on the line. Before modern when extended was 7 blocks or a few years back, winter PTQ season was extended season. People played it in season but once the PTQs and GPs were done people no longer cared.
Extended started to decline in popularity as soon as it started to rotate/not include all the magic sets. It basically was legacy back before the year 2000 or somewhere around that time, and people loved it.
Oh and extended is officially dead. Saw it coming from a galaxy away. No one I know played extended.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Although I never played the format, I remember the days when Extended was very popular. The introduction of Modern was the final nail on the coffin, but it really died when it went from 7 years to 4 years.
It goes to show you how people will still want to play the formats they like regardless of Wizards' support. When Extended became initially neutered, a lot of its player base went to Legacy; when Modern was introduced, it took pretty much everyone else and left Extended for dead.

Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.
No doubt in a few sets time extended will return with a new name a new size (say five or six blocks) and everyone will be excited again. WotC are just waiting for Modern to get bigger and become the go to non-rotating format over legacy/vintage.
