Isn't the right play merely to activate that ability before you play a land?
The ability is less good than "Draw a card," but it's much better than I would have expected out of a mono-red planeswalker. You're drawing an extra card a turn if Chandra flips cards that you want to use. At that point, my question is whether or not a competitive deck could be constructed in a way that would minimize the "Flip a situationally good card in the wrong situation and rage-out" problem I could see Chandra having.
There's definitely an argument for waiting on your land drop in hoping you reveal a land, but more often than not it seems better to play your land first, so that you'll have more mana to cast whatever it is you reveal. Depends on it you're flooded or not.
She's got some interesting synergy with Domri though... if you whiff with Domri, you know what works best with Chandra's ability.
I love how every new Planeswalker introduces an avalanche of, 'Should have been one mana less' posts. Never changes no matter how many get posted.
The one less mana makes all the difference in the world between Constructed powerhouse and being only fringe playable. Look at Liliana of the Veil. If she cost 2BB, she would not be that great at all. Since she costs 1BB though, she dominates multiple Constructed formats.
1RR would have probably been pushing the line for Chandra. I would have been okay with RRR though so only RDW can run her.
Except, you if you decide to not use the exiled card this turn, you lose it for the rest of game.
Ugh, I'd take the original Chandra over this one any day. 3 incarnations and they can't get it right.
This is actually the 4th Chandra. I feel like they would have done better if they had saved her for Theros but she's just not at all up to snuff (again).

If that's your "casual," what on earth is required for "formal," a butler in livery shuffling the decks whilst a pianist plays Brahms in front of a tapestry?

Yeah but not on turn four when you've playing a land to cast Chandra. You're basically forced to +1 her on curve, and that +1 ain't killing much or doing much protecting. So it's like you need to play her in fast R/x Aggro.
The problem with playing her in mono-red is that you'll often be flipping a one-drop, a Rakdos Cackler. You should just be curving out into threats and burn at four mana. If you're playing her outside mono-red aggro there are better options, ones that actually let you draw cards.
I love how every new Planeswalker introduces an avalanche of, 'Should have been one mana less' posts. Never changes no matter how many get posted.
Agreed. It's getting old. Everyone always wants their cards "one mana less." And everyone states it like it's the most original thought out there. Quite annoying.
I like red's version of "draw a card" in chandra's 0 ability. It's definitely card advantage but with a "gotta have it now" attitude that is very Red. Hope this leads to red having more of this meachanic.
"Me only" gemhide is a good mana elf with no backfiring. In general though I imagine it will be confusing to play a Sliver mirror in EDH because of some Slivers sharing abilities across the table and some not.
I think people are underestimating Chandra. Do I think she's great? Of course not.
Do I think she's playable? Somewhat. I could see her filling out a niche role ala Koth of the Hammer...who wasn't great, but had sideboard applications.
Young Pyromancer should see play IMO, and if it does, Chandra will likely have a role in that deck. Being able to stick damage through while building your army with Thought Scours, and Think Twices seems like a potential shell for a deck.

From my understanding of the card, you should never play your land before you activate Chandra. If she flips a land, play it. If she doesn't flip a land, you can play land from your hand and still use it to cast whatever Chandra flipped.

I like to do things like looking at Stoneforge Mystic and Jace, the Mindsculptor threads at times like these.
This planeswalker is good in the hyper aggressive red deck. It will be a playable card.

This guy, would either eat up several turns worth of mana to get a slow permanent that relies on your already have some board presence (after wasting said mana), or dies without generating any advantage.
Agreed. It's getting old. Everyone always wants their cards "one mana less." And everyone states it like it's the most original thought out there. Quite annoying.
It is because most cards are one mana away from being highly playable. It has been and will be the most used criticism of cards. If you don't like it then don't go to threads that talk about cards.
From my understanding of the card, you should never play your land before you activate Chandra. If she flips a land, play it. If she doesn't flip a land, you can play land from your hand and still use it to cast whatever Chandra flipped.
The problem is "Better than firebrand" is still not actually good. She might be playable on the back of her 0, but she certainly isn't as good as any of the 4 versions of Jace for example... I think her 0 will just be "draw a card" most of the time, assuming you build and play with it in mind. There's just no real reason she couldn't have cost 3 and actually be good.
Sure there is, because this card being 3 mana would be broken beyond belief. Draw a card for no cost every turn in the color that can abuse it most? Plus an ability that puts Cunning Sparkmage to horrible shame? Think about it critically for a moment before freaking out that it's not obviously absurd.
From my understanding of the card, you should never play your land before you activate Chandra. If she flips a land, play it. If she doesn't flip a land, you can play land from your hand and still use it to cast whatever Chandra flipped.
Am I incorrect?
Incorrect in that 'never' is too strong of a word. What if you're aware of the next card needing 5 mana? Or perhaps you'd rather have that fifth mana in case you flip a cmc 5 card?
In RED. The color of card disadvantage. Without losing loyalty. It won't be used as much as the +1, but you'll be happy when you do.
Except for the fact that red has been getting a lot of the loot effects that blue had (blue had a disgustingly better part of the color pie). It could have even been something like draw a card, then exile a card; making her ultimate play on those exiled cards. I think we're at this stage in magic, where we realize drawing cards is incredibly powerful... so much that green gets it, black gets it, and white sort of gets it. Red has been getting a lot of loot effects, whether it be Faithless Looting, Mad Prophet, or Desperate Ravings.
Apart from the card disadvantage, there will be many instances this card will do absolutely nothing. Creatures have gotten so big and powerful that even Ral Zarek's lightning bolt is scoffed off by the Thragtusk, Restoration Angel, Boros Reckoner, etc. Pinging for one to push through damage is not what one would expect in an aggressive deck. Even Koth of the Hammer, quite arguably the "best" red planeswalker had to compete against Hero of Oxid Ridge. In control or midrange, Ral Zarek just seems like a better fit. Putting more terrible abilities ontop of other terrible abilities doesn't make it better.
I think the card is playable, but not worth the hype that preceded its spoiling. Maybe it is a 1-of in red deck in standard, but with that said not many people really find reason to only play mono red...and with that said...Domri does what you want this card to do (find you action cards that are mostly creatures, due to the fact that the spell utility quality is reduced based on timing) almost better (three very relevant abilities). Granted I understand that this is a core set, but looking at the card going forward I cant say I am going to be looking for one

LOL This is the GOOD Chandra they promised? She's okay I guess, but she doesn't fit in any decks I can see existing. Her +1 is not that good unless you are really aggro and in that case you would run have a haste 4 drop like Hellrider or Exava, her 0 is meh because it draws you a card but you have to play it right away, and her ultimate might as well be flavor text (true of most walkers).
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.

That 0 ability looks fun, though. You should be able to play most things you get with it.
