All right, so I was on the right track in comparing it with Corpsehatch. Both destroy a creature and give some mana back. They are also both constructed unplayable.
At least it is common, unrestricted creature removal for limited.
Edit:
I disagree. At either instant or 2BB it would see tournament constructed play. At 3BB and sorcery though I just don't see it happening.
2BB and sorcery might have been tournament worthy. But 3BB and instant? I don't see how that would be playable. What would you be using the BBB for during your opponent's turn to justify the 5 mana you spent?

If your opponent has 2+ creatures out? Use that BBB for Doom Blade and Tragic Slip!
In the same way you can tell someone is from the XVIII century because he is arroused by ankles, you can tell someone is from USA because he feels nipples disturbing.
Meh. At 4 mana you can play spells that are geared to pull you back into a game (rewind, some walkers, wrath, etc.). At 5-6 mana you want a threat that can end the game on it's own. 7+ you want to either outright win the game or put it so far out of reach that you might as well have already won. If this had been 4 mana it would have been playable. It wouldn't have been for every deck and it wouldn't have been the type of card you want in multiples very often, but it would have been playable in small numbers. At 5 the rate isn't very good, and comes at a point on the curve where you are far more likely to not have enough to do with the extra mana (especially if you don't hit land #5 on time).
Why not outright play Doom Blade, Doom Blade Tragic Slip?
It's the same mana(CMC) you would pay!
OR
Doom Blade, Tragic Slip, Tragic Slip? Pay only 1BBB
Why not triple tragic slip?!

Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.
5 mana kill spell with no restrictions is already good in limited. I could first pick this. The mana ritual is a cool perk; being able to throw down a creature afterward - or anything, really - seems solid.
Kill a guy, sign in blood, tragic slip sounds pretty good IMO also.

Evil is boring. The universe is friendly. Life is on your side. Joy is your birthright. Cynicism is idiotic. Fear is a bad habit. Despair is lazy. In fact, all of creation wants you to succeed. Act as if the universe is a prodigious miracle created for your amusement and illumination. Assume that secret helpers are working behind the scenes to assist you in turning into the gorgeous masterpiece you were born to be. . . Life always gives you exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.
Or since it adds BBB, maybe it helps you get to that sweet sweet BBB for that new enchantment that whenever your creature dies you lose a life and draw a card. That thing is going to be busted wide open I am betting.

If you have 5 mana to cast Liturgy, you should have the mana to cast the enchantment.
Besides, the enchantment will be entering AFTER you destroyed a creature...

OOOhhh... the tripple slipple...
Many thanks to DNC at Heroes of the Plane Studios
Don't forget:
Cockatrice
Killer Bees
Unyaro Bees
Emerald Dragonfly
Hornet Queen
Bayou Dragonfly (getting a strong green flying bug vibe)
off the top of my head.

But you can do that with Doom Blade. Can you come up with a scenario where this card is better than generic 2-mana removal?
God this card would have been such a good skill trap at 4 mana. What a freaking shame.
Heck, it would have been cool to cost it at 5 colorless and add BBBB. So many ways to have better exploited this design space.
