Very nice card for Legacy merfolk, semi-permanently dealing with red or green creatures (Goyf, Deathrite, Lavamancer, random elves/goblins etc.) all while attached to a 2/2 for 2 mana which can benefit from all the lords seems worthwhile as a sideboard card if nothing else.
May also stand a chance in modern which has the same merfolk creature base available as legacy. In standard it's less likely but there are a lot of good targets and if we get a good merfolk theme in Theros/the rest of m14 it's a possibility.
I don't see much rare about this other than the power level. Coulda been a 1/1 for as uncommon, no problem. Power level was pushed to justify it being a rare - blahhh. :/
Standard wise he's a cheaper, more narrow Dungeon Geists without evasion. I think the fact that he won't be able to do anything but just sit on the field (in standard) is the biggest problem. I'd rather just, ya know, remove the creature I targeted instead. I can't say I expect this card to do much of anything unless Merfolk become a thing in standard. I don't even see the SB applications really.
Tidebinder Mage only works against green 2/2 for 2 mana against red? burn fish at least if they made it a 0/3 it could hada achance, but 2/2 and no hexproof or pro red?

Against green is a totally different story.
Still, a bad card
She's a 2 mana efficient ETB creature in Blue (A color that usually doesn't get this sort of efficiency). Asking for Hexproof or some other form of protection against removal is overkill.
The reason why Witchstalker and the paladin have protection against removal is that they cost 3 mana and don't actually do anything outside of combat. A 2 mana creature with an ETB effect is a whole 'nother ballpark.
A pretty obvious kid crying because he can't beat better players at fnm with his red deck loses. With only 16 posts, am I supposed to assume you're trolling?
I thought some freaking common sense would indicate that poster is being sarcastic. S/he replied in an over-the-top fashion to a post jokingly asking if people would whine about this card in the same way as they whined about Witchstalker. Those are usually some red (Heh) flags for sarcasm.

This I can agree with. This card has the potential to slow down a green-based strategy for sure, but it will more than likely eat a removal spell at the end step of the turn it got put down against a red deck. Meh, only time will tell.

Maybe, but it's pretty useful in that it hoses down the early onslaught, or, later in the game it taps down something backbreaking, and you have counter mana up. I'm not sure yet what a new control or tempo strategy could even look like just yet with all the hosers around, but it's not impossible.
We'll have to see if any big leg ups go to control in the core set yet. Format seems to be gearing up for a cool down based on the mechanics we've seen so far. M14 is a VERY Johnny set thus far. Tribal themes with lots of support cards. Creatures with lots of evasion. Makes sense that they'd be doing something to charge up the control strategy to make all of these evasive creatures...
Wizards does still give blue some love. This is amazing. Hopefully they keep this up for the next forever and give Selesnya the crap midrange jank it deserves.
That this guy is also a relevant creature type is just icing on the cake, especially for Modern/Legacy players that enjoy Merfolk.
I can't wait to see the black and red cards.
And they say U is meant to have underwhelming creatures
I hope the B one is something like a 0/1 Haste creature that gets +1/+0 for each green or white card in your oponents' graveyards. I don't even want to think about R's since I know it'll be the worse, on purpose.

Yes sir, I take fantasy art and character design commissions, PM me for rates.
Hey, at least this thing doesn't have Hexproof and another hate ability that they JUST printed.
For everyone making statements like this (or even "dies to searing spear before they untap"). This (like master of the pearl trident before it) is not a standard card. It may see some standard play because of how good it is, but it's a card designed for a specific deck. The deck runs like 20 merfolk lords (so it's going to be a 4/4 for 2 often enough) and DOES have flash (thanks to Aether Vial). This card has EVERYTHING it needs to be a legacy (and modern if merfolk reaches a critical mass of cards) 3-4 of staple (though in the SB).
Just to repeat this if anyone still doesn't get it:
The merfolk creature type makes this STRONGER than than the green one having hexproof (or the white one first strike and lifelink) because (in addition to its lower CC) the creature type ensures it will see eternal play.
This, combined with the reprint of Mutavault, really, really makes me want to play modern Fish. Merfolk is my favorite creature type, and this might have what it takes to shore up a poor matchup and make the deck tier 1.5.

Maybe? It's one of those cards where it may not be good (say if nobody plays red) since it is just a 2/2 vanilla otherwise, and from what I understand Fish lists are pretty tight in Modern (and maybe in Legacy). Regardless, I was talking about Standard applications honestly, and how much I hate these stupid Hexproof creatures that make up the Bant Auras deck. The "No Interaction Allowed" sort.
Tidebinder Mage fits so well into a game of Magic. All blue wants to do is live long enough to have all the answers. As an aggressive/midrange naya player, I know that this card will kick butt when its on curve. It could very easily shut down an early game by itself, or induce a stand off with a lone Hydra at the end.
It's so okay it's average. I wouldn't be surprised if it sees play, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. It does a cool thing and it does it well for a low cost, but the metagame for standard will determine whether or not it's good enough.
I don't think it's good enough for modern or legacy, outside of merfolk decks, where it should probably be a sideboard inclusion. Seems really good with merfolk tribal lords/the entire deck.
When Tidebinder Mage enters the battlefield, tap target red or green creature an opponent controls. That creature doesn't untap during its controller's untap step for as long as you control Tidebinder Mage.
First legacy playable card out of M14... and it's blue lol, i'm not even surprised. Hope the Red version isn't comically underpowered compared to this.
Combine this with counters/protection and this is effectively blue removal for Goyfs/DRS/Goblins/Thraghtusk. It doesn't even trigger death abilities so it's amazing against Thraghtusk.
