You could easily ramp this on turn 4 and get out armada wurm for 2 defenders while you use his +1 continuously until either another -3 or a -7. He's a lot better than I think people give credit for.
You also could have just cast the armada wurm at that point.
This garruk it terrible and will be unplayable in constructed unless Theros has a substantially lower power level than the current standard.
Black on black looks like trash. This is also easily the worst Garruk ever printed and is in the running for the worst planeswalker next to Tibalt.
wow
breaking my heart wizards, breaking my heart.
I'm with you Kamahl. He's an EDH card and unlikely to really shine in other formats. With Planeswalkers, it's all about the role. At best, he could be a SB option for mid-range or ramp decks against control, but I really don't know. At 6 mana, most mid-range decks will just prefer casting something more impactful, like Aurelia, Progenitor Mimic, or Aetherling--and they might have Cavern of Souls mana up to push it through, unlike Garruk.
Maybe after rotation we will see an increase in ramp if reanimator strategies go bye-bye. I have a feeling Wizards is trying to slow things down this time around.
Definitely a casual-oriented planeswalker, and that's fine.
I like card advantage in green, you can easily draw 2-3 good cards with his +1.
I was surprised to see that there weren't that many good targets for his -3. I guess R&D has been cautious with Natural Order around. His ultimate seems very out-of-reach for such an expensive planeswalker who needs to use a -3 to protect himself.
Maybe he will do something in Standard with Worldspine Wurm, but I wouldn't hold my breath. 2-card combos at 6-mana that don't win the game usually don't go far.
I'm really hoping to see this guy go low in price, 'cause I do see some marginal potential there; the CA can be pretty ridiculous in a creature-heavy deck, and the -3 and -7 abilities can be used on the following turns to potentially save mana for other purposes...
That said, I'm sure he'll see play in all sorts of kitchen table EDH decks and few-to-no competitive builds (I just want to see him get broken open).
Hes not "bad", but 6 mana is a lot to get a bunch of creatures in your hand.
Ultimate doesnt matter, this is pretty much about the +1 ability (which will win the game anyway if you get like 5+ creatures out of using them over turns).
The -3 is most the time bad, as you wont play creatures in your deck that cost much more than 6 anyway (and if you do, this will probably be a bad idea to start from).
Funny still, but hardly a more expensive walker than say 5 bucks.
It might have an appearance in standard as a 1-of or something to fuel a deck that ramps with creatures, but its not a card you want in every deck, and most likely not 4 of (unless we get a creature that totally dominates with its -3 ability, which Worldspine isnt).
Definitely not a traditionally competitive Planeswalker, but I think a lot of fun could be had with this guy in more casual formats. I think he could do some pretty crazy stuff in EDH. I like the card quite a bit.
Anybody who.gets the promo can let me know. I would love copies of it. Dump them while they are hot. As for the card, I like it. When you get it out, it will cast a blocker for you to protect him. After that, you fill your hand time and time again. Saying he is unplayable is false. He isnt the best walker ever, but he is starting out underrated.

RIP Batman guy. I hope somebody picks up the slack now that you are gone. Sick children need their Batman.
Then you clearly forgot Chandra Ablaze, Nissa, and probably a couple of others that I'm forgetting.
Posted from MTGsalvation.com App for Android
Nope, they may suck, but Chandra is nowhere near as narrow and Nissa is an incredibly strong casual card. They also saw standard play for at least a little bit.
if people think they are going to cheat in worldspire wurm, you are better off using polymorph on mutavault, and judging by the NNC, it is more plausible and competitive than this Garruk would ever be in standard.
Yeah, this is a card I would have drooled over very covetously 3-4 years ago when I was getting back into Magic again. Big monsters! Hooray! Nowadays, I try to evaluate things with less boyish excitement and more pragmatism.
So is this good? I'm not really sure. It's 6 mana, which is a heck of a lot. He can protect himself, if you have a fatty sandbagged (which if you're a good player, you should). Of course he can't protect himself when you're in topdeck mode, but then you can +1 him and draw into some gas.
But then I compare him with Primal Hunter .. and ... I think Primal Hunter is a bit more consistent. PH is a great card all by himself that'll make some decks scramble just to get rid of him (he was one of my most feared nemeses when playing Control). COB requires a bit more help to get the most of it, but I suspect he has greater top-end potential (that ultimate!). But ... yeah. 6 mana is a lot more than 5, which is itself a lot more than 4. It'll be best in Prime Speaker/Ramp decks, and probably not in a lot of Tier 1 decks (though of course you never know).
And I think the black-on-black promo thingy is awesome.
All in all .. cool card! I like it.

Making a playable Chandra is something wizards is focusing on. I'd expect something between Sorin, Lord of Innistrad (low end) and Garruk Relentless (high end) in terms of power level. Even tho they're pretty close.
Nissa is actually a good planeswalker, they just needed to increase her starting loyalty by 1. The downside was having to play Nissa's Chosen (even tho it's not a completely unreasonable card)

Black on black promos look ew and I enjoy the color black, but his text is hard to read and the art detail suffers due to being just two shades of the same color. He will still go for a lot due to being a convention promo (terrible promos) and his playability is confined to FNM decks and EDH. Does that make him trash...no, but saying he will be winning PTQs with the cards we have now...I give his chances 1% at best. I don't mind him because unlike Tibalt he can be played in some formats, so saying he is that bad is just first look shock reaction that happens 99.99% of the time on these forums (I have been guilt of it too). You get hyped and then you see the card and the let down makes you cranky.

You do know that these go into very different decks right?
A turn 4 or 5 trostani's summoner is nothing to laugh at, plus if you can untap with him and plus 1 you should not lose the game. Also that same turn if you play another one you can put a creature you got off the plus of the first right into play one. They board wipe your creatures? that's fine ill draw 2-4 more.
Looks solid enough. +1 should usually draw at least a card, and might get 3 and more on occasion. -3 is kind of Elvish Pipery. Not sure that is very useful as most creatures can already be cast the turn, or the turn after, this Garruk was cast. However, it does let you play multiple expensive creatures the same turn, including letting you drop one the turn you cast Garruk. -7 is of course nutso. Also, it's kind of weird seeing a Garruk that doesn't make tokens.
Also, not a fan of the "black on black" thing. I've already seen what too much black can do in hockey jerseys, and it would have been much better had they done those cards according to the color wheel, as in Garruk should be "green on green".
Really, do people only ever see "not constructed worthy" in a card? Does every card have to be a constructed staple to be acceptable?
In order to be an acceptable constructed card, then yes, it does have to be good in constructed to be acceptable. Which is all that saying something isn't constructed worthy means.
Yeah, its a timmy card. I can't reasonably see any constructed appeal to him, its 6 CMC for a card that can whiff with no impact or be dead, and even at his best he's just an overpriced dramatic entrance or concentrate on turn 0. As much as people might despise it, theres pretty much a bar that a card for 3+ CMC should have board impact without needing to survive an enemy untap and a card at 6+ CMC should seal the game on the spot.
White Blue Green, do youmeanBant? The control deck that has been around since RTR came into standard? And this version of Garruk really only fits into Primespeaker Bant at least right now. The other decks do not run enough creatures to take advantage of Garruk's +1.
And the blackout version is the ugliest magic card I have ever seen, just garbage.

you assume you have mana ramp and your opponent allows you to ramp into things....
And you make your mana drops. Essentially for a turn four garruk you will have to hit 4 land drops in a row and have two mana acceleration....
and the best you could do under your scenario is a turn 4 trostani's summoner
geist turn 2 with mana acceleration would have beat you down for 18 points of damage on the play.... 12 on the draw....
Not that I expect to see it, but it would be kind of neat to see the same sort of thought put towards this as the old Tooth and Nail decks had going for them... ramp and then a set of singletons of expensive bombs to be cheated out.
Ah well, at least I'll see that happening in EDH decks, and I see no reason not to dump him right into my silly rampy giant beastie mono-green Lady Zhurong, Warrior Queen.
