Ethan Fleischer was asked about this on Twitter. As it turns out, the artists that would have been voted on don't appreciate when the entire Magic community just argues about which of them suck for the purposes of voting.
Yeah, we've had enough of people talking about how anyone who prefers another card design is part of the unwashed idiotic masses who are literally killing magic. Let's not funnel that hatred towards real people.
That, and you know what they say. If Wizards started shipping $100 bills in boosters tomorrow, people would scream and cry and whine that they were folded the wrong way.
More crap, at least Season and Liliana's Wake could have had more color than the ****ty muddybrown and necropurple most black cards have.
Also, hating on fictional breasts doesn't make you look cool or mature, it makes you look like an even more tit-fixated douche than the people who obsess over them.

Yes sir, I take fantasy art and character design commissions, PM me for rates.
Short of a hymn to tourach reprint in the same set, I don't see this card doing anything at all outside EDH, where apparently every card can be played no matter how bad.
It was basically designed for one dude's EDH deck, and unless if it's very aggressively costed with enough support cards it will remain an "interesting" card for niche decks.
I'm frankly much annoyed that we could have had a really nifty land that could've been used in different decks. Even if the land did something niche and freaky, but still playable across multiple colors and with weird card interactions. This card, on the other hand, offers up very little than a niche of a black deck.
I personally think this was the best choice as it fully represented the "rummaging through other peoples' discarded items" feel of the mechanics. I don't understand everyone's fascination with Zombies in the art when that merely represents 1/3 of the full card...
Art could've salvaged an otherwise forgettable card. Now, it is a crappy too literal art piece. Cool, it represented the mechanics. Poorly. It literally rubbed them in your face going "HEY GUYS! I DO THINGS WITH DISCARD! HURR DURR" Once again, the general feel of Season of the Lich's art description is what sold it. If you had any imagination you would understand why I ABHOR this choice.(not as much as I would've hated probably Argyle doing Lilliana's Wake. GOD I hate his art.)

As opposed to those who voted for Season because, "PUMPKINS"? Food obsession?
At the most, the rest of the arts represented the creature discard side of the effect. None of the others represented the other potential results. I voted for Waste Not because it has the best chance to represent the whole card, not one convenient facet.

No. The people who voted for Season voted because the card set up a sinister, eerie mood. One that is, quite frankly, better than the p.o.s that won.
For all the people who are saying Waste Not was the only one showing anything related to the card, I have to remind you that 'discarded cards' look nothing like 'discarded trash.' A guy going through the dumpster is not salvaging a planeswalker's spells, he's picking up trash. Season, on the other hand, described an enchantment that empowered the user, which we can assume to be an aura that allows them to siphon off the discarded thoughts of their enemies. It's far more applicable to the card's design.
But I guess at least I'm happy it's not going to be a planeswalker card. Too much planeswalker in this game, if you ask me. I get it, having mascots is a good selling point. Frankly, planeswalkers are pretty boring in my opinion.
Why did anyone like season anyways? Grimdark Pumpkins? Why would anyone want that on a magic card. I really don't understand unless everyone just wants all black cards to look like cheap Halloween toys or something.

For the same reason people like the art on Moonveil Dragon and Fires of Undeath. It's good art.

The flavor of various game zones and cards in those zones varies from card to card. When you summon a Gravedigger, he literally digs up a creature from a literal graveyard. When you cast Reminisce, you remember all the spells you cast so far (and somehow empty all the literal graveyards around you). And both those concepts could've fit this card just fine.

Cao Cao, Lord of Wei combo.dec here we come!
If it's costed well, it might see play in windfall decks. If it's like mana cost 6, forget it.

Wrong, that'd be Season of the Lich.

When the winning artwork description was in fact: the ragman sifting through trash?
