So, we're just giving Blue Oblivion Ring effects now? Between this and Rapid Hybridization* I'm sure glad Wizards is keeping Blue's one actual restriction of not dealing with creatures well intact
*I understand Rapid isn't 'killing' the creature but 'transforming' it, but even if you agree with that flavor at least then they bent over backwards to justify it.
Lawls, you're a bit late there champ phyrexian ingester did that and left you a bigger body.
Really, do people seriously not remember that Blue does get to exile (usually temporarily but not always) alongside White? I mean what the heck people? Stop saying exile is a white only ability when it's not the case.
By far the saddest part of this card is that it lacks flavor text. There's a lot of reminder text; which is reasonable being its in the core set. I would love either some Moby Dick reference or a witty quip about how Ash Ketchum's Mom is so fat not even a Colossal Whale exiles her.
Well, this guy temporarily removes threat, but at the same time is vulnerable when removing said threat.
I also noticed that for the last ability, seems like now it's not exactly a trigger anymore, even when the returned creatures can still EtB trigger. I wonder if that will affect the ol' classic "Kill before trigger resolves" trick.

Soooo many misconceptions here. First off, Rapid Hybridization isn't anywhere NEAR killing a creature. It's like if your doomblade said after you kill their sizeable threat they get another sizeable threat that can and still will kill you. Second off, this is HARDLY an Oblivion ring, it's much closer to Fiend Hunter, and even then there are differences (since this guy only exiles when he swings). Besides, is this REALLY the card you're going to complain about? it's not like this and Rapid Hybridization are good. It'd be like Red players complaining that White got WWWW3 deal 3 damage to target creature.
Omigosh! A Whale! There hasn't been a Whale in Magic, for like, 12 years!
But it's sooo small. COLOSSAL WHALE. 5/5. More like LOLossal Whale.
The flavor is interesting, but doesn't make all that much sense. Everyone it ate just pops out instantly as soon as it...leaves. I guess if it's gonna die, or be banished, or stuck in a dimensional pocket, or stuck in the back of your mind, it spits everyone out?
But I'm glad it got past that bizarre rule loophole shenanigan.
However, the power-level of the card should have little or nothing to do with how much it breaks the color pie. That's why Maro keeps harping on about Hornet Sting. Showing a color is bad at something is different than having it unable to do it at all. I'm not primarily a Red player, yet I WOULD complain if White got an unconditional burn spell (instead of only hitting non-white, or creatures in combat). While this might prove to be a poor card over which to make this argument, power has little to do with color pie acceptability.
Higher rarities have more color pie bending leniency - that's why Form of the Dragon gives red life gain, but Hornet Sting is a greater issue. This is a top-down designed mythic of a big whale swallowing stuff that won't show up until its dead.
A Fiend Hunter-like ability in blue is less of a stretch than one might think as well.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
Isn't it really weird how Whale's triggered ability is one ability with a duration instead a pair of linked triggered abilities?
Isn't it normally "When ~ attacks, exile target creature defending player controls", and "When ~ leaves the battlefield, return all creatures exiled by ~ to the battlefield under their owner's control" (a la something like Fiend Hunter)?
I don't think that this is functionally different, though. The "return event" should still be a trigger, and you should still be able to permanently exile a creature you sac it with its exile trigger on the stack.
Just really weird wording.
As Lord of Atlantis (ha, how fitting:)) said here, it is functionally different.
With this new wording, you can't react to the leaves the battlefield trigger anymore, with let's say a Trickbind. So, such shenanigans are not possible in the future. Which is a good thing, imo.
And it makes those effects way slimmer design-wise.
1. There is no white card that exiles and returns a creature belonging to a defending player.
Blue cards that exile and return:
day of the dragons
icy prison
deadeye navigator
ghostly flicker
aetherling
nephalia smuggler
Wormfang Crab
Wormfang Drake
RichardHero, you do have an excellent point, there, but perhaps Emmara has great magical power to account for her high toughness? After all, the power and toughness on a creature card can reflect magical power as well as physical power (Akroma is a 6/6, which makes her more powerful than the colossal whale, but she is likely the same size as Emmara).
Also, you drew the whale facing the wrong way in that image; if you examine the card, you shall see that the whale's mouth is facing the left side of the card, not the right side.

The flavour/size of the whale is fine, we all know that Emmara is the rotten flavour failure here. Basically, just pretend she doesn't exist and then compare the whale to other humunoids and it's fine.

Yes, I do agree that flavor text, possibly with a reference to Moby Dick, would have been nice, but, if you are not familiar with Pokemon, Ash Ketchum/Satoshi's mother, Delia/Hanako, most assuredly is not overweight, unless you intended that statement to be a joke?

Akroma is a mother****ing badass angel of war and destruction. Kratos would weep like a little baby in her presence.
Emmara is.. ugh.. I like to protect uhm, stuff that we like to populate... Like rabbits and stuffs.. (Which for some reason makes her more badass P/T-wise than the three-headed dryad guild leader)
The whale is huge, it swallows like 100 ships in one bite. The valid complaint I would take is that a whale probably isn't that good at fighting on land.
As a side note towards Thalia, please take a hint from Lavinia - use your protective armor wisely.
My only complaint about this card is the name, they switched grizzly bear out with runeclaw bear but colossal whale is ok?
I like this guy though, example of a top down design.
It's the fourth whale in M:TG, so no, not a new type.
All of the people complaining that this is 'only' a 5/5 clearly don't realize that Wizards did this intentionally to keep Spikes from breaking the fourth Whale.
Your whale is facing the totally wrong way. The art is it's head and mouth breaching above the water. It's probably slightly smaller than you make it out to be.

No, they switched out Grizzly Bears for a singular bear.
Wow, I like this card. I'm still thinking of making an islandwalk-themed EDH deck one day, and this will fit in very well.
Though I agree it could have better p/t, I understand why it doesn't. And I love the flavor.
Nice core set rare.

Awesome flavour and effect and cool for limited but... a COLOSSAL WHALE is a 5/5?
Can't wait to cast Giant Growth on a Lurking Crocodile, have him fight with the colossal whale and let the epicness begin.

Agreed. Colossal Whale isn't exactly what I'd call a 5/5. Sound more like a regular Great Whale to me.
