No, the original Ravnica was much more balanced. There were more classic-type control strategies that you could play. Counters were much more powerful.
What's weird though is that the shift in design focus has still left pretty the same number of guilds in mediocre territory. They're just different guilds this time around.
It seems like they would have a more balanced standard if they allowed each color to have unique niches instead of designing around forcing a specific type of play and then inevitable designing around countering that type of play now that it's so pervasive.
Gilder Bairn is almost entirely outclassed by Vorel. GB requires surviving combat or forces you to use a spell or other creature to tap it before you can use the ability. The untap mechanic is much more situational and thus more restrictive than Vorel's ability.
Vorel is not a weak card. It's just not amazing. You guys need to stop acting like any card that doesn't break the game or add an entirely new mechanic is lousy.
Your tellin me, I give an easy, and pretty reliable way that Vor can spawn a turn 5 win and ppl still whine. "Uhh waa, uh uh waaaa, Vor makes counters so hes boring, uhh waa!". Jesus....spoiled? Nah, Im not saying that.....thinking it loudly though.

There is buried treasure everywhere...in a graveyard.
Why is Advent of the Wurm both green and white? Or, conversely, why is the token that it generates only green? Should not he color(s) of the spell and the color(s) of the token be exactly the same? And is that spell even very good? It seems to me that it is not as efficient as it could be; while 5 mana for a 5/5 creature may see to be appealing at an initial glance, Isamaru, Hound of Konda costs 1 mana for a 2/2 creature, watchwolf costs 2 mana for a 3/3 creature, and woolly thoctar and leatherback baloth both cost 3 mana for a 5/4 creature and a 4/5 creature, respectively, and I am also certain that there are token-generating instants that are more efficient, as well, so Advent of the Wurm is not nearly as efficient as they are, in my mind.
From Maro's tumblr (Blogatog for those who don't know), I know that one of the reasons it's white is because design is instant speed token producers white. So, because it is an instant, it is white. Now, why does it produce a token at instant speed? I assume this is because it is white. No further questions.
I assume that its also white to clearly identify it as selesnyan so the guilds could be divided evenly.

Penumbra Bobcat makes black tokens despite being mono green, Golgari Germination makes green tokens despite being B/G, and Day of the Dragons makes red tokens despite being mono blue. The precedent has been there for quite a while that spells don't have to create tokens that have all of their colours.
So I didn't play magic during the original RAV block but was it this creature/midrange+aggro focused?
Quite the opposite - it was eventually dominated by control decks, due to the very high concentration of cards for defensive decks. Remand, Faith's Fetters, Mortify, Spell Snare, Grand Arbiter Augustin IV . . . and then in Time Spiral, Dragonstorm came along. It was an absolute nightmare for fans of creature strategies.

It was also the golden age of Zoo. Watchwolf, Giant Solifuge...
I like current block formats the most.
Its so limited to its power scale against other formats.
Block constructed should be a more competitive format like it was back in Champions or Ravnica.
Kaalia of the Vast plus Master of Cruelties equals early game one shot kill in EDH. Can't wait!

Don't forget Kird Ape in 9th.
The original RAV meta actually fluctuated quite a bit.
It also didn't help that RAV/TSP Standard had the most cards ever in a Standard environment.
Thanks to Heroes of the Plane Studios for the amazing sig.
