I'm still hoping that "Ral Zerek, Planeswalker" is a red-herring. Niv might steal his spark and run away laughing. That would leave us with, "Ral Zerek, Legendary Creature".

I’d like to see the Phyrexians invade the Homelands plane. Once they assimilated the poor design they would be easier for another group to take out.
Thundermaw hellkite is so much much stronger it almost hurts ^^
But sure, allways liked dragon cycles.
Thundermaw Hellkite is the main reason why I believe this cycle could be printed actually. Five mana for a 5/5 flyer is as efficient as the Titan cycle of M11. With the 3-colour commitment, I think this cycle could push the envelope quite a bit.
Maybe a CitP ability for each (based on the central colour) would be necessary to make them chase rares.

nooo. no more enter the battlefield abilities, for the love of god.
I'm sure a million people have already pointed this out, but the first letter of the names of the set in this block (Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Dragon's Maze) match up with the original. (Ravnica, Guildpact, Dissension.)
A nice little reference I guess, though I assume i'm not the only one who kinda saw it coming after gatecrash was revealed.
A buddy and I were tossing around the idea that Niv Mizzet was trying to creature a vortex that allliwed time travel between the planes (the maze being the different pathes between the where and the when). If this was possible, which isnt likely, but for fun, wherr and when would you think niv would go?

I fear I won't have much time to play Magic these days.
I get to watch worlds develop around me.
I get to watch great leaders, terrible oppressors, and trend setters rise and fall.
Limited, Standard, Modern, everything is a different playing field I feel I can observe, but will not actually touch.
I look forward to the stories I will hear.
And more so to the ones I will watch unfold first hand.
Isn't the unknown exciting?
and he's the "Minotaur" at the center of the maze?
If by Minotaur you mean protector of the maze then possibly as in protector of the mind of Ravnica as in the collective conscience of the plane. O i've gone and boggled my own mind.
It's not hard to read the first 3-5 pages of a thread.
D'oh! That's what I get for posting while on the go on a bus with little time to read while being weeks behind on the news here. Lesson learned.
On topic: I'm hoping that the title name may suggest some sort of 10 card cycle of guild associated dragons or something. I mean there have been so many mono-colored cycles in the past and even 3 tri-colored ones. I know that the presence of hypersonic dragon hurts this possibility though.
The Maze is a path to power. It's a thing, probably shaped by Leylines and numerous other things, that creates a ritual one needs to fulfill to reach something. Think less Final Fantasy and more Outlaw Star's Galactic Leyline, Fate/Stay Night's Holy Grail, Wheel of Time's Seals on the Dark One's prison, or the quest chain to create the Staff of Shifting Sands and open Ahn'Qiraj from World of Warcraft. It's a long complicated ritual that opens the key to a door.
Edit: If they want to tie it all together, the Nephilim will be a part of it. Maybe something like early guards or whatever. Chances are Niv Mizzet's original plan (with the Rune-shaped Ravnica) was suppose to be a way to completely brute force the lock on the door. It failed, but now he has a new idea.
I think the relationship to Hunger Games is probably a fair one to draw, but it's likely the Dragon's Maze is less a tournament and more of destination scavenger hunt. The competition will be over finite objects or the locations necessary to reach the "center of the maze" and claim the prize.
Said prize will probably turn out to be something like the Akashic Record as well as a way to ascend to/above Planeswalkerdom (perhaps becoming the Ravnican equivalent of Gaia?)
Whew, so I just read through the first 21 pages straight... This post I think presents the coolest story ideas. Yes, there are the literal gates but more importantly, what if "gates" are just seen as a path to power? Undoubtedly this would link to the AEther channels mentioned in Bells story. Had the AEther channels always existed on Ravnica since forever? Did Niv-Mizzet or some other ancient dragon(s) form the channels and for what purpose? Why is Niv having them investigated by his guild? Infinitely more interesting than a Triwizard tournament if you ask me, though a tournament certainly has a badass factor to it. Anyway, the reason I made the analogy to the Mako Cannon in FF7 is because of the nature of mako usage, which was quite directly sucking the life out of the planet; these AEther channels should be linked directly to Ravnica, since you know, you draw mana from the land and the channels would be a fast track to power, possibly at the expense of something else. Obviously Niv had knowledge of these channels, whether he shaped them or not, and is planning to use them in some (direct or indirect) way. This is all rather vague, yes?
The maze can't contain something that Niv-Mizzet wants unless there's a risk to taking the wrong path. If that weren't the case, he'd just go in first and have no need to get other guilds involved. They must be test subjects for finding the proper route.
maybe the maze doesn't lead to anything, but the maze is what Niv-mizzet has been looking for/making. It could be a work of art in itself that Niv wanted for Ravnica.
It's funny seeing people throwing all those theories when the answer is already public with the first RTR novel. Jace enters Niv-Mizzet's mind, and this is what he says to his assistant:
"They (the Izzet) have begun to piece together a particular path."
"It doesn't seem to be a maze in the traditional sense. The maze seems to lead from landmark to landmark it's built into the very structure of the existing districts. An implicit maze. That's why we've seen the Izzet showing up repeatedly, doing experiments around the Tenth they're uncovering the route through this maze."
Under the stones the city is built on, there is a code apparently written by the Azorius during the foundation of Ravnica. This codes is like a path that leads to something the Izzet and Jace believe could grant immense powers to the guild obtaining it. It is also theorized that said thing could be a weapon of some sort. Apparently, this whole code thing was made by the guild founders in case something were to happen to the guildpact, so that one guild could rule them all.
I think it's certain considering that his picture was right there in the announcement. He is not really a good guy though.
The novel suggests that we will most certainly get some vampires in UB. It resonates well with the story on Uncharted Realm the previous week. I really hope that vampire will be playable as a tribe.
Hey, a boy can dream
It would be extremely cool to see another three-colour Legendary Dragon cycle, this time at 5cc. Something along the lines of:
Jundish Dragon
:2mana::symb::symr::symg:
Flying, Trample, Haste
5/5
Thinking that using 10 rare slots for this would produce a lot of interest in DGM with the EDH and casual crowd.
Thundermaw hellkite is so much much stronger it almost hurts ^^

this would be so cool but i think the keyrunes are just names made up for mana stones.
Yes it has been noticed. These posts are on pages 2 and 3.
In fact it was even predicted back on the 11th before we knew the set name.

Thanks to XenoNinja at Heroes of the Plane Studios for the sig.

dude this what I have been thinking, dimir's guild leader is trying to kill niv, that is why i think it is named dragons maze
