Promo Codes Coming to MTGO

  • #1
I thought this was interesting and relevant to paper Magic. MTGO is going to support promotional codes. You get a code and redeem it to recieve cards online. They say there will be different ways to get these codes and one is already available on the page. I could see these being added to booster packs, perhaps on the advertisement cards. It would provide added value and encourage more players to try MTGO. What do you guys think?

    Introducing Magic Online Promo Codes

As Magic continues to grow, we are constantly looking for additional ways to engage our audience and provide ways that we can integrate the paper and online experiences. We are pleased to announce that on March 13 we will be launching the Magic Online Promotional Code program. This program will provide new ways to unite paper and digital Magic experiences and give us another way we can reward our player for a variety of different brand interactions.

While we will be rolling out the Promotional Code program slowly; eventually, we will be able to offer our players many different ways to earn promo codes for digital objects in Magic Online, whether by purchasing specific products, attending events and conventions, or even just interacting with us through social media.

Players will be able to redeem any promo codes they have earned by going to the Magic Online Store, entering the code in the Promo Code field, and clicking Submit. Please note, however, that the promo code entry will only be available in the Wide Beta version of Magic Online, which you can download now.

Very interesting. I would definitely play if I can redeem these codes for points to play the digital game (aka boosters and/or tickets)

Do they have the printing tech for unique codes in booster packs?

    This is AWESOME.

I hope they do this like Pokemon TCG Online. The only thing I really like about PTCGO is that every booster pack or sealed product (pre-made deck tins and such) gives you a blank card with a promo code on it. Typing this into the program gives you redeemable "pack points" that you get free online boosters with.

Buying a pre-con gets you a Promo code that gives you the entire deck online.

A friend of mine has told me all about how much he likes this system, and it creates an interesting secondary market. People who play the Physical card game, but who don't play online, sell the pack codes on ebay and such. My friend just bought 50 pack codes for about ¢50 each

It's about damn time. Gaia has been doing this with events for a long time. And the Pokemon TCG has been giving out free codes for online boosters in booster packs and promos in Pokemon League. They even give you a free online tin when you buy a physical tin.

yea itd be easy. Could be placed on the insert card.
Create an algorithm to generate the code and generate X amount of code, and inkjet print them onto the insert cards.
Can be done even after these insert cards have been cut from the press sheets.
    Very basic Variable data printing

Could even add the scratch off part, but I think that would add a bit more to the cost of booster packs Frown

The official article makes it very clear that this program only applies to US residents.

    Redemption Code Promotion Terms
Offer is good for a license to use one digital promotional version of the Avacyn’s Pilgrim card from Innistrad. Offer expires at 7:00 a.m. PT on March 20, 2013. Offer is not valid for cash or cash equivalent. Offer is valid for redemption by account holders whose billing address is located in the United States only. Only accounts in good standing may take part in this offer, and each such account may redeem the code only one time. Offer is non-transferable and use of the code in unauthorized advertising, marketing, sweepstakes, or for other promotional purposes is strictly prohibited.

Wizards currently does this with Kaijudo.

I really hope it's a random card, non-redeemable of course. If the item can be traded in Magic Online this will be a very nifty way to build up a collection.

I really dislike that more and more things like these are coming to magic online before the product is fixed.

They need to create an iOS and a web client, so everyone have access to the software before rolling too many of these products out. As it is now it's only windows users that can use magic online and have access to extra PTQs and now also GPTs.

How long before you can mail in a physical card and get a promo code for that card in return?
  • #17
Sorry, but no. I'm not going to start playing MTGO just because of a code. All I would do with it is try to trade it to someone else for real cards.

The mirrans are pretty much the same way. The grass is metal, the people are metal, the water is metal, the whole plane is metal. Nathan Explosion would be proud.

I played Conley in round 6 of day 1. His turn 1 play consisted of land, bauble, apology, pass turn.

It's like if you went up to your friend and said "there are lots of bees over there and I'm scared" and they replied "Shut up, horses can't even hurt you."

Never played MTGO, but is there is a way to be able to get those promos if you are not form USA. I mean, they said:

Offer is valid for redemption by account holders whose billing address is located in the United States only

Is there a way to "cheat" with the billing adress?

    Thanks

The "US only" has nothing to do with WotC only wanting to provide it to the US, it has to do with other countries laws prohibiting and/or restricting things like this in ways that make it economically unfeasible.

In sum, its not really their fault.

Mark my words...2 years from now, the ONLY viable archetype in standard is going to be aggro or tempo, maybe.

    Control will be dead.
    LD is already dead.
    Combo will never exist again.
Card discard will be BBB to get rid of 1 card.

Now, I KNOW this won't happen but I've 2 hopes for this.

    1. This introduction of promo codes directly ties in to the release of the Power 9 on MTGO this year... and the big secret was: M14 is going to be the full on 20th anniversary celebration of Magic. Unless it's a brand new card, it's a formerly un-reprinted card from a previous Magic set, with each set represented by no less than 2-3 cards. (Even Homelands is deep enough to provide 2-3 cards, even if they are just limited fodder.)
And those new cards? They're all nostalgia Planeswalkers, mythics, legends and such.

Remember hidden treasures? Yeah, that's what the promo card slot will be- MTGO Power 9 art cards with MTGO promo codes for redemption on the back.

But that? Not going to happen. Ever.

    2. There's now the Phantom Event infrastructure- let all those almost worthless promo cards in the back of each pack have a redemption code for a Phantom tix. 4 Phantom tix lets you play in a special single elimination draft queue that pays out with a special promo card from the current set to the top player.
8 Phantom Tix buys you in to a six pack sealed with the same reward structure.

I know I'd probably go back to buying a box of sealed product with each set at ever release if it came not only full of it's own product but also bought me in to 8 drafts or 4 sealed events on MTGO.

Again, it'd never happen. It'd likely take too many players out of the regular queues, meaning they fire less and they're less dead money for the grinders to nom on, which drags the usage and profitability down. (Or maybe not, you'd probably have a very large number of new users coming in)

    But, they're nice ideas. Smile

The first thing I thought when hearing about this was:

    "Ooh, welcome to 1995 WotC"

and then I read on the thread about US only and just died a little inside...

After this many years with terrible clients we get US only promo codes? I could barely imagine MTGO being designed any worse than it is. Atrocious.
    Winner CCL October 2012
    Winner CCL November 2012
    Winner CCL February 2013

open 8 packs right now and tell me how many mythics you get.

those numbers are not accurate at all. theres variance you cannot just simply put a number on it.

flip a coin 100 times, chances are you will not get heads 50 times.

those numbers on back of a pack are not legit if theres no statistical proof to back it up. and as far as im concerned there is none.

US only promo codes is a legal issue, not a design issue.

I still get the promo codes from the pokemon theme decks living in the uk, not sure what magical laws there are the prevent you giving people digital products for free.

I mean, even the WoW tcg had/has those loot cards for redeemable in game mounts and crap, but wizards cant throw the non us player base bone too?
