May be going insane, and I don't pretend to be a modern guru, but I at least think the theory of City of Brass at uncommon isn't to hard to fathom. I mean only time will tell, but the only thing that would be keeping it at rare are its iconic statue and its availability in black border.
Now whether that is enough to keep this card a rare in a set to promote Modern only time will tell, but I know if I pay 7 dollars for a pack of cards and my rare is this, I would feel a touch disappointed. But then again, I could have said that about half the gatecrash packs I opened.
You can bust 20 packs of the best sets ever and get nothing but jank. I mean GTC isn't the best set ever but its farrrr from the worst. Expecting every pack to pay for itself is just asking retailers to charge you 15 bucks for that pack of Modern Masters or they will just open every pack themselves.
Are you seriously suggesting that if you could easily bust 20 bucks worth of cards from most modern masters packs that retailers would sell it to you for 7-8 bucks?
Well valid points aside I do suppose that the concept of printing a $5ish dollar rare at uncommon was a touch....optimistic to put it lightly.
And my words may have come off scewed, personally I would be estatic if hte worst rare I could open was City of Brass, that being said seeing as it is part of a pack, it almost speaks for itself that as lack luster as it may seem it will not be the worst rare of the set.
And having its art on the case adds further proof that wizards is happy of this decision for this land to be reprinted in this set.
On the other hand, if you expect almost every card in Modern Masters to be cards that go for $10+, prepare to be massively disappointed. They won't fill an entire set as such and many will have unrealistic expectations of Wizards in regards to this product. I wouldn't be surprised if we see them take this as an opportunity to include sought-after EDH cards in new card frames, as well, which could be where City of Brass makes more sense.
If by new card frames you mean modern frames (as opposed to white bordered cards which only have black border as foils), I think you'll be very disappointed. The product is called Modern Masters, so printing a card that has never seen the Modern border and therefore not legal for Modern is very unlikely.
I say that with the obvious exceptions of the Time Spiral Timeshifted set.

There is a slightly larger pool of cards than I thought would be avaiable to be drawn from. Thse numbers arn't exact as some will show up more than once due to being reprinted at different rarities (ie rares became mythics).

I counted what I think would be 67 available rare lands, I'd think there'd be 5 rare lands in MM (so 4 more out 66?).
Hopefully at double-price packs, that CoB is the least "valuable" (if value is any indication of power) card in a rare slot. Otherwise they are going to have just another CMDArse fiasco IMO.
I wouldn't say that 'goyf is the only reason to buy packs en masse, but CoB isn't giving me any incentive to buy (that warm tingly feeling), that's for sure.
Not to mention the only way to get a City of Brass in foil is either buy an 8th edition foil one or buy the Super Series one. You are looking at a 26+ dollar card right now for any version of foil city of brass easily. This one will likely fetch nearly as much. City of Brass is still a EDH favorite, despite not showing up in nearly any serious competitive decks since its rotated from Standard.
These will be a decent pull in foil and probably not the worst pull in normal mode. This will also be the only black border City of Brass not counting foils since Arabian Nights. That is a BIG deal!
If you think this is going to be the worst rare you can bust from these packs I have a bridge to sell ya. No way in heck this set doesn't contain at least a few bulk cards that are casual favorites or something.
I hear Vintage and Legacy are pretty competitive formats. I think City's modern play might have more to do with shocks + fetches already causing a ton of life loss. If we get some new lands with basic types and the format moves away from shocks for more decks, we might see City. Of course, it would also help if more decks desired access to 4 or 5 colors with a low land count like, say, Dredge. The insistance of not killing before turn 4 has probably hurt the golden City, too.
With the amount of rares that will be in the set, do you guys HONESTLY expect every single one of them to pay for the pack? Get real people. Most packs WON'T pay for themselves because that wouldn't be smart business.
City of Brass is right now at its cheapest a 5 dollar card. Even IF this would be the least valuable rare in the set, that's still a very high mark. Due to the fact that this will be the only way to obtain it black-bordered modern-framed at a decent price, I'd expect this to become MORE expensive then the 8th edition version.
There will be "filler" - and even that filler will be fringe playable in Modern, which City of Brass most certainly is. It's a highly flexible land and depending on the deck, that 1 damage might not even matter. It also sees use in EDH, so it's never a worthless card to have a copy of.

Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.

Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
It's completely ridiculous if they have utility cards like Cryptic Command or thoughtseize as mythics. Heck, Cryptic Command isn't even that expensive, it's like 15 euros or so.
This is not a "real" set. They could put vanilla creatures like Tarmogoyf at mythic if they wanted... o wait. Yeah you will see utility cards that are staples at mythic because that is THIS set. Hence MM is supposed to be filled with staples, and therefor you couldn't avoid it. If they do a good job there won't be well that is a 50 cent mythic fml.
For my money, the most likely set of lands in this at rare is the shadowmoore/eventide filter lands. Probably the full cycle. They are GOOD lands, probably some of the best duals to be printed and would certainly edge out shocks without the fetch interaction.
They also have a rather limited supply. It would also seem silly to include the shocks in MMM, since they are being reprinted right now. I also think there is a 0% chance that we will get this set without a land cycle at rare.
I wouldn't mind four of these foiled out for Legacy Dredge, but still, seems like a waste of a rare slot in MM. Oh well, I guess it was expected that we'd see plenty of lower-value cards in the set.

Well, it's not like there are any options besides the Shadowmoor filters, or pains for rare dual cycles if you exclude shocks. They're certainly not going to do Lorwyn tribal lands and pain lands are still jank rare priced 4 years after their rotation. (in addition to being really similar to City)
Perhaps it is due to wizards saying this set will help reduce the expensive buy-in that currently cuts a lot of people off from modern? I know I would to play that mono white thalia deck but I am not paying those prices for kitchen finks....its an uncommon for christ sakes!
You'll be disappointed if you want to play any deck with uncommons (and in some cases even commons) that are a staple or in high demand, and only want to pay $0.25-$0.50 each for those cards. I could give you a rather large list of commons/uncommons that go for $2.00+ each in eternal formats.

There is just one uncommon you need to mention. Force of Will. Uncommons can get crazy expensive, even commons like Lotus Petals can get expensive.

Indeed. Even newer commons/uncommons fresh into Standard can jump up in price. New Phyrexia was full of $2-$5 uncommons right out of the gate because of the demand.
I can't think of many 5C Commander decks that should run it over the other available options (Vivids, Command Tower, Grand Coliseum, Exotic/Forbidden Orchard, Rupture Spire etc.). It's usually put to far better use by Darien, King of Kjeldor decks.

Since when is Grand Coliseum better than City of Brass? just because it can make colorless mana? it etb tapped, makes a colorless without damage, and can make any color for 1 damage.... i'd say it's strictly worse than CoB...
Plus, keep in mind, this set was designed to draft. Mana Fixing is a staple in modern plus you need fixing in draft, would you rather have CoB taking up one slot or something like the 10 signets taking up 10 valuable spots in the set? My money is on CoB being uncommon...

City of Brass is bad because the original duals and fetches exist. Good argument. Sol Ring is better than Thran Dynamo, and Mana Drain is better than Counterspell. Not is blowing your children's college fund on Commander is a good option too.
I get it, there are better options out there, but it's hardly a bad card. Not by a long shot. Magic elitism has hit an all new high when people complain about City of Brass. If City of Brass is the worst I get out of Modern Masters, I'll be celebrating.

it could be interesting if they reprinted city of brass... Maybe wizards wants to get creative rares for multicolour decks.
i do hope they reprint kitchen finks, that would make my day
keep in mind that all sets have their meh rares, this could be one of them, and if it is(because i hope it is), i will buy 2 for each of my 3 color EDH decks because they (will most likely) have boss art. i do like the card itself though.
Count me in as another person baffled at the people who are complaining that this card is in Modern Masters. It's a $4 card when we knew that they weren't going to print nothing but $10+ cards in the set anyway.
I just took a look at ark42's prices, and I see exactly 82 rares/mythics in the sets that are eligible for this selling for $10 or more. Not all of those 82 are likely eligibile for this set (for example, Jace TMS is banned and I would be stupefied if the shocklands were in here), so we probably only have 60-70 realistic options. I don't recall exactly how many rares and mythics are in this set, but it's probably close to that number. Did anybody really think they'd just take that list of money rares, throw them in the set, and call it a day?
