Worth noting that Borborygmos Enraged has also now been officially spoilered...by simply being added to the Card Image Gallery. No article, no nothing.
I guess I'll discard the 2 Loxodon Smiters to get my other creature back from Soul Ransom since it's an opponent's ability!
I believe you control the ability causing the discard since you are the only one that can activate it and thus will not trigger the free etb off of your smiters.
Gruul charm seems much worse than the other charms... kinda sad
it is saddening how much the gruul charm pales in comparison to the others. i guess it goes to show that all charms are not created equally. i can't imagine how wizards could make this and think it compares to the versatility of the other charms. ugh, as a gruul fan, i'm actually a little disgusted with this charm. the first ability is ok, but couldn't you just run good creatures that push through regardless? the 2nd ability really seems like a waste, unless taking things that don't belong to you becomes a big thing. and the 3rd ability seems ok, but it won't kill the fliers it needs to, like restoration angel or aurelia (who i can imagine will see much play). boo wizards.
The effect could prove so discombobulating to combo players, in particularly, they may fizzle and run away screaming. "From that day the Curse of the Plateau was upon me, and I found every hand I ever pull from a combo deck is a mulligan."

I personally prefer 75 islands. There is nothing than the look on your opponents face once they start trying to play around your counter magic and you know you're sitting on a deck full of islands and nothing else.
It also allows you to board in 15 cards and completely mess with their head between the boarded games.
Ransom is such an elegantly designed card, love it. It's power level is probably a little higher than it's been given credit for, too. At worst, you're probably getting a 1 for 1, at best, you spent 2BU and a card in order for the opponent to discard 2 cards and for you to draw 2 cards. Strategically speaking, it's a little slow, and a little too conditional, but if you build a deck and consider it both card draw and disruption, it makes sense as a 1-2 of in the main deck.
As for standard viability... maybe 3/5? It's probably one of the best steal a critter cards that wasn't red in quite a while, but it's not consistent. Control decks will either let you steal their dude and answer the enchantment or counter it, and aggro decks will murder you with low cmc's that you wouldn't want to target in the first place. It's good against midrange, because that's probably the best place for you to get the value of the card from the second ability. It worth testing, but I don't see cards like this showing up in many top decks, it's too risky for consistent results. Guess we'll see.
I wish the Orzhov keyrune had bigger teeth, but it's a servicable blocker indeed.

Or run mind control and just bypass all the thinking you put into this post. Not trying to be insulting, just trying to be realistic. I don't think 1 less mana makes this card more playable than mind control. Especially in a control deck.

Black has a lot of sac effects out there. Since the discard 2 cards is part of the cost to destroy soul ransom, you can respond by saccing the creature itself to something else and they'll still be out two cards. I'm not sure if you would still get to draw 2 from it though.
Your opponent can take back their creature at instant speed if they have two cards in hand. Okay, so don't put yourself into a position where that would blow you out. Play smarter than that; don't run the stolen creature into a situation where it switching sides is something you can't afford. People are talking like the person playing Soul Ransom can't even remember what their own card does and completely forget to account for it in their planning.
And the cost to your opponent for getting their creature back is hardly trivial. Not only are they spending two cards, they're giving you two cards. If they're paying that hefty sum, they better be either in a desperate situation where they *need* that creature more than they need card advantage, or they're beating you so badly that no amount of card advantage is going to dig you out.
This times one hundred thousand.
If you're the one playing Soul Ransom, I highly doubt you'll put yourself into a situation where you will get blown out.
I once farted during the final match for prizes at an FNM. It was a tense moment, everything was quiet, control vs control, I was about to mana leak, thought about it.. and farted. Then mana leaked.
This is just an insane card constructed play for sure, just plain control magic is basically a two for one getting rid of your opponents creature and giving you one but if your opponent wants to stop you from doing it they have to discard 2 and let you draw 2 making it a 1 for 4 instead
This card seems really pushed
and we saw at the example of vexing devil, why cards which give your opponent choice are bad. even if both choices are not good for your opponent.
it will just never do what you want it to too. you want to draw and let your opponent discard? he will give you his creatures.
you want the creature of your opponent, because otherwise it will kill you? he will just discard and let you draw.
so this card is just bad and wont see much constructed play, just like vexing devil.

Except Mind Control isn't in Standard so the argument over which is better is pretty moot.
Gruul Charm's second ability does make sense at all to me. How do you gain control of permanents you already own?
Because owning and controlling are two very different things that usually are the same. But say you get Soul Ransomed or someone grabs a creature from your grave using that primordial? Well, you get to take them back because you own them. They just control them.
as much as i like mill, informant is kind of a let down....the black primordial on the other hand i love a lot and fits into both my EDHs quite nicely. Orzhov keyrune looks like it may see play if Esper control becomes a bigger thing and requires blockers

No offense but i would always assume that they would try to wreck my combat math. Thus i would be playing the game like chess and plan ahead for such a moment.
For 2UB, I should not have to be walking on pins and needles with my opponent, and avoiding any number of advantageous situations because they could be turned around into a blowout.
I believe you control the ability causing the discard since you are the only one that can activate it and thus will not trigger the free etb off of your smiters.
The controller of an ability is the one who activated it. Since you activate the ability, your Smiters don't go into play.

Those Smiters are not entering play bro, when you activate the ability it is not via the opponents will that you discard.
Feel free to bid on my cards here!
My guess? One of the modes of Orzhov Charm.
It better be. It better be freaking nuts!!!!

Agreed.
If it's any consolation, all the other charms with W have been bonkers.
