I have mixed feelings about this set. I was super exited when RTR came out and I saw the spoiler.
But now when I read the GTC spoiler, I do not know if I really like the set. I do like the Orzhov mechanic and I think it's a lot of fun to play. But overall I see no cards, which can make an impact on the modern format. It is an overall impact on standard that's clear and it helps the standard metagame to grow. But I do not see any cards that might be played in modern. I hope I am wrong!
The anti-token card will make a splash in modern, and probably allow bitterblossom to be unbanned.
Boros Charm is probably playable in modern as well. I'm also certain that a few other cards will find a way of sneaking into older formats. They always do.
Haven't logged-in in a while, but was really looking forward to gatecrash because I am a huge fan of W/B. In my local magic community I am kinda known for it. Looking over the cards in the set I felt a great deal of disappointment. Maybe there are some hidden jems like devour flesh that I will come to like but as it is right now, for a white black player nothing from the set excites me.
I have been looking forward to gatecrash for over a year, but I should of clued into the fact that it would be bad for constructed when deathpact angel was released. I was a huge fan of desolation angel, it is one of my favorite cards, and angel of despair was alright. When they released deathpact angel my heart sunk. Sure it will be good in draft I guess but...
I am just indifferent to the set. It brings about no emotion in me other than disappointment maybe.
Why are people saying his set sucks? It is awesome and I like the direction they took with removal. Finally more gamedepth.
Because it looks like nothing is going to change. Most players assume that this set will offer maybe 5 or 6(could be more) cards to the format and that most decks are still going to remain basically the same. Whether that's true or not is yet to be seen.
If you want to ban powerful cards, why not Islands? They have been proven to be fairly unfair in most cases.
The worst turn 1 play you can face down is Draw, play basic Island and say, "go"
Wow... Dimir really took shaft this time. Aimless mill + bad creatures + no playable (possible exception Hand of Binding)
Dimir is a whole just looks very aimless/unfocused. Almost like that Dimir Deck in Dotp2013
Wait, what?
Having a bunch of nice evasive/unblockable creatures to go with cipher, having stuff like UB: Mill 3, cipher, and plenty of mill support? Removal like Grisly Spectacle or Killing Glare. Aimless? Shaft? I do not think so.

Yes, being a BW fan myself too, all the BW cards suck at least for the format I play, Modern. Where are my deathrite shaman or abrupt decay power level cards, wizards?! Nowhere to be seen... lol at the vindicate priest.
Other than that, I can say this set pretty much sucks for Modern.
I like boros charm, skullcrack and simic charm (this one I think is good in the SB of Infect).
I like the anti tokens card because it helps against faeries if bitterblossom gets unbanned and becomes too good (which I doubt, but it's better if this card actually exists).
The merfolk take over the Simic Combine and only three of those appear in this set. That is sad.
That's exactly how I feel. Reminds me of Avacyn Restored and the werewolves. "Ooh, we're going to make a completely new race of good werewolves called the Wolfir. Then we're going to only give them two cards in the entire freakin' set."

Well, here's how I see it and I'll keep this short.
There are about a dozen or so rares in this set that will see play and about a half dozen commons/uncommons. This doesn't include the shocks that we already knew about. So we're looking at about 25 cards. That's about the bottom end of what we normally get in a set of this size. So no surprises there.
More specifically, without naming cards ...
Boros is a deck
Mill is a deck
I'm a pretty crappy player, but one thing I'm good at is picking out the playable cards and where a set is going to fall in the constructed landscape.
In short, there will be one or two new decks come February.
Depending on your viewpoint, can't really ask for more than that.
This set as a whole is not that bad. There are a few good cards aside from the lands. I really think there will be some standard sleepers and some other creatures that will be used in other formats. I am just happy there arent as many cards in this set I need right now for decks so I dont have to spend an arm and a leg to get them. I will have fun this weekend in limited and drafting which will be a blast.
I really enjoy the artwork especially some of the simic and ohvoz cards. Overall the set is quite weak even the guild mechanics arent as exciting as RTR ones. While im sure their some gem its just not that great.
It is suffering from the middle set syndrome as someone has pointed out. Its trying hard to be like rtr but its just not the same. I doubt apart from R/W aggro that there will be new decks for standard.
Im seriously getting over this EDH crap I know wizard is pushing it but so many cards for commander just feels so lack luster and not special especially since im one of the few that doesnt like edh I just feel ignored :/
And yes i want foilz gift of orzhova that card is just to pretty :3

I think if I was drafting to win I'd be going Boros or Gruul. I think that you'll be lucky to draft a solid Orzhov deck but both it and Dimir will shine in block constructed. Overall I think all the guilds will balance out. It would be fun to do a 10-way guild feud after Dragon's Maze. I'm thinking a cross between EDH and Standard - 60 card decks with a guild leader Commander (command zone, color identity, etc) and normal Standard rules. Last Guild standing wins.

Orzhov seems very underpowered, which really upsets me. Wizards let me down again Boros gets Boros Charm and Aurelia's Fury....Orzhov gets Immortal Servitude, and it doesn't even target their gy. 0/10
Like everyone, I'm extremely disappointed in the highly overpriced cipher mechanic, but I feel dimir more than makes up for it in the other cards and abilities it's gotten. I'm sure I won't be the only one going dimir at the prerelease with absolutely no interest in running any cipher besides whispering madness or mental vapors if I get one, and mental vapors would just be to sideboard against gruul...
Excited to run esper control in limited, possibly even B/U/G if I get enough mana fixing to run a couple of the good B/W cards I hope to get. This is going to be a fun set to draft, no doubt.

About 20 cards from each set necessarily see play in standard. Doesn't mean they will see play in anything else. **** set
Just saw Illness in the Ranks.... It costs B and is an enchantment that gives all creature tokens -1/-1. So not only did they completely shaft Orzhov they printed a super hoser for the one card that might have made it playable (Lingering Souls)....when they had already printed a ton like Izzet Staticaster and Detention Sphere. I'm pretty upset with wizards, it's clear that they only want mindless aggro decks like Mono Red, Rakdos, and Boros to be good.
Nothing makes those decks mindless. And if they are then wouldn't tokens be pretty damn mindless too?
Extremely disappointed in the lack of merfolk. There are some fun cards for my UG EDH deck at least but I don't see how this set is going to have near the impact on any constructed format that RtR or Innistrad did.

You people can't even keep your stereotypes right
Mono Red is hard to play in legacy, but the standard version is comically easy to play, and the same will be true of the other decks that I mentioned.
I don't want to run tokens, I wanted to run Esper or U/W midrangy goodstuff. Esper might still have the tools to be good because it will finally have a good manabase, but it got basically nothing from this set. It also got hosed by cards like Frontline Medic and Aurelia's Fury (ping you on upkeep, now you can't wrath).
