You people look half the set for the first time. Like 1 second each card. How many of these cards will be "OMG this card is soooo good" in 2, 3, 4 months from now? You just scroll down with your greedy eyes, looking for obviously powered cards (and they´re there), and don't notice cards that will be playable in standard, modern, and even legacy.
Just don´t judge the set yet. It´s impossible to know if it´s good or not right now, only time will tell.
Indeed especially when the 2 ridiculously powerful cards Deathrite Shaman and Sphinx's Revelation were not being fully recognized when revealed. They were both deemed to be playable but nowhere near the format defining cards they now are. Pretty hilarious when the general mtg population miss not 1 but 2 cards at launch from just the last set and are far too busy hyping up other cards.

This may be true with standard and even to agree with modern but not in legacy. Most legacy cards are easy to evaluate by looking at the mana cost alone. If it cost more then three it better win you the game. The cards in this set have a higher mana cost compared to other cards from older sets. This is a low powered set targeted at lowering the power of standard , an interesting limited environment and nice EDH staples.

Well first off this set seems to be very limited pushed. Illness in the Ranks seems like some LS hate and its very pushed. Still sad we didn't get any good ramp spells at common or uncommon though.

If all you play is competitive Legacy then enjoy having 99% or more of every set not effect your format.
I mean seriously, when Legacy has every set to rely on ever made and even promotional sets that contain random new cards. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that the vast majority of stuff is irrelevant to Legacy. Crap certain decks in Legacy go for 1-2 years or more without getting a single addition from a new set.
I just looked at a Dredge list that Top 8ed a very recent tourney the only cards it had in it from recent sets were 4x Faithless Looting and 1 copy of Sun Titan.
...Knight of Obligation has amazing art but falls flat in the usefulness department... Knight of Obligation could have easily been :symbw::symbw: pro white pro black extort 2/2 and actually seen some play...
I totally agree! I was so excited about what kind of card that art would have been used on, oh well.
EDIT: The set as a whole seems fun for limited. I'm mostly a modern player so there's not much for me here.
Wow, this set makes me so, so sad... out of over 100 cards spoiled today, I found one rare that I really like (Boros Reckoner), one rare that I kind of like (Immortal Servitude), and maybe three or four commons/uncommons that I liked (And one of them I only liked because it featured Ral Zarek).
It seems like all of the cards are overcosted by 1-3 mana and there are so...many...damn...useless...filler...cards.
We didn't even get the much-rumored Orzhov O. Ring. We just got an overcosted Pillory of the Sleepless reprint (I know it shuts down activated abilities but that hardly ever seems relevant to me. It's all about Triggered Abilities these days).
So glad I bought none of this set. I see little that can compete with the cards that are already in standard. Also very sad that I chose Gruul for the prerelease. Clearly outclassed by every other color. zzzzzzzzz
I am of the completely opposite opinion I think gruul is the best followed by simic and boros
Umm pretty sure they have yet to make a Arrest style effect that shuts down triggered abilities. Would probably be rather confusing in tournament play for a newer player since activated abilities are a lot more obvious.
I was actually hoping for a Faith's Fetters reprint. A functional reprint wouldve been even better.
So, now that I have seen all cards with the word cipher on it, can I safely say it is the worst of them? Barring a cute rare here or there, it is god awful. 3U to draw a card, and have Curiosity attached. 2U would have been FINE, but no. Same for discard one. I mean, 1BB would have been neat, maybe even playable, but no. I don't see why WotC had to overcost it to make it unplayable at all, seeing as the 6cmc ones are the only "good" ones, and they are subpar at best, EDH fodder if anything.
Disappointment.

As I recall he said there would be no cycle of Hybrid one-drops in the set. That still allows for one or two. Which explains the reprint of Beckon Apparition.

I had a feeling this would happen, but I was unfortunately right to think that when we had only 122 cards spoiled, we had seen all the "good" stuff already. There is barely anything left in the other half or so cards that were spoiled tonight worth remarking upon. Nevertheless, I like the set. I look forward to playing in the pre-release, cracking open my box, and seeing how the set impacts Standard and the EDH scene.
W/B all the way for my first sealed. So much elim and good stuff. I can't wait.
Stop crying and play people.
really? what exactly is good about w/b specifically? all the orzhov cards seem pretty much vanilla with extort tacked on. i was really hoping for more cards that were along the lines of Vizkopa Confessor. or at least a bunch of scalable low drops so you can take advantage of multiple extorts.
im not saying the guild is bad by any means, but it went from my #1 prerelease choice to probably 4th or 3rd...(due to expectations, i was expecting some real grindy cards along with some really power EtB effects to go with the otherwise vanilla extort guys. was also looking for some better lower undercurve drops.
it feels like orzhov is going to be the "izzet" of this set to me now. the only saving grace it has is that white and black traditionally have removal spells.

I have to agree with the sentiment on the Orzhov guild. I was so happy with I found out that their mechanic was based around life drain. But now I find out that they're not doing anything with it. Cards based around lifegain are very much an unexplored niche (barring a few rogue cards like Well of Lost Dreams or Cradle of Vitality and this was their chance to do something with it.
But other than that, I think everyone is just in their usual depressed mode that they weren't given the perfect tools for their already existing decks or complete no-brainer cards. Just give it a while and let the people who are actually good at this game do their thing. Then, in a few months or so, you can all netdeck their creations and then collectively show up here to whine about how overpowered card X, Y and Z are and how awful Dragon's Maze is compared to those cards.
This set, it was made for me! A Limited/Casual Simic player, that is. I'm very happy with how each guild turned out (while some of the RtR ones seemed underwhelming to me), the draft interactions are going to be unorthodox as hell, and I might actually build my first Constructed deck in ages. Of course, I won't be buying a box, but I'd wager that we're going to play more GTC drafts than RTR ones.
As for the guilds' power level in Limited, Gruul look very scary, and Orzhov have a solid gameplan and all the tools to achieve it (though offensive creatures with Extort feel weird). Dimir have lots of unblockable stuff, too, so I wouldn't relax around them.
Here goes my desire to go Dimir at prerelease... Why Cipher, you looked so promising.
When the shock of comparison "w/r tricks to b discard and u counters" will wear off, maybe I'll return to Simic. For now I'm hilarious example - "BUG player which goes Boros".

Limited should be a lot of fun, IMO.
There are a lot of fun casual/EDH cards.
Great flavour and the artwork is outstanding, on the whole.
Pretty pleased with the set.
