12/31 DailyMTG Previews: Deathpact Angel, Illusionist's Bracers, lots of small stuff

Is anyone able to make out the promo cards. I can confirm that they are not the holiday preview cards, as they are ALL creatures.

Those look like very likely Treasury Thrull, Fathom Sage, and Rubblehulk, but the Dimir one is definitely a creature, and the Boros one has different lines of rules text than the normal one, which seems a little unusual.

At this point, as much self-destruction potential as there is in Batallion, I can't wait to play with it. Its very nature will probably relegate it to non-constructed formats, so I'll gladly pick them up for random kitchen table decks.

Am I the only one who thinks that Angel is incredibly mediocre?

Actually I feel like this angel has alot of potential. I'm thinking of more along the lines of Sprouting Thrinax where an opponent has to have multiple forms of removal (usually) to deal with the card for good.

WOTC needs to hire you. I have never seen a more fair or more perfect card. If there is a mythic X spell for orzhov, I hope this is it

In reference to XXWB Mythic Sorcery - Return X creatures from among any graveyards in to play under your control.

Emissary is fantastic; absolutely love it.

Cloudfin, Boros 1 drop and Bracers look cool too.

Liking what I'm seeing so far.

edit: Murder Investigation is awesome Smile

I just want to see the token for the angel, because I will laugh at the amount of text on it.

Overall I am liking this. I love how they did bloodrush and it will make limited against any deck GR a nightmare (but in a good way). I realize the spoilers won't stay at this level, but I'm happy now.

EDH is like French fries: some people like waffle cut, crinkle cut, or plain old straight cut, and while there's slight flavor difference and personal preference, at the end of the day they're still fries.

If you equip the deathpact angel token with the brachers you can get 2 angels from your graveyard for the price of one.
  • #72
Yea Boros and Dimir Promos are different cards.

Now, if we could just get that goblin walker. Preferably before the part in the storyline where he planeswalked right into Progenitus.

How is that different from Priest of Urabrask?

It's not all that different at all, but nothing saying you cant run them both in one deck!

I will admit, I will be very happy to pull a few Boros Elite and Burning-Tree Emissarys. I haven't been this excited about Uncommons since New Phyrexia.

The fact that the Emissary is a shaman also means she can slot right into an EDH build I'm working on, you can never have too many Manamorphose type effects in EDH.

Unless I'm mistaken, those are not Rubblehulk and Treasury Thrull. I believe the only thing I recognize there is Fathom Mage.

Angel: Flavor homerun! Spawns a minion that will resurrect it. Straight out of a video game. Love it.

Swine: +5/+4 Giant Growth at common? Gruul seems like a nightmare to block against.

I just saw Illusionist's Bracers, and laughed for a good 2 minutes of what kind of havoc this will allow me to unleash in EDH with Riku/Mayael.

Can't decide if I'm going Boros or Gruul for the Prerelease still... Definately building Naya though, haha.

Protip: looking at the product page, it seems last week's spoilers will be our prerelease promos.

The Gruul, Orzhov and Simic cards look like alt art versions of the previewed cards. Dimir looks like one of their Nightwing Horrors, and Boros looks like one of their armoured elementals.

Combat is going to be so much fun; not only will Bloodrush combat tricks be a constant presence, but you'll also have to be careful about letting creatures through in case the opponent is holding an instant speed Cipher spell. And Evolve will reduce certainty about the board state.

Cipher reminds me of Ninjutsu in all the best ways. Grin

Extort seems a bit boring, but in practice it can be really fun; it's like Lobber Crew on crack, and limited folks love Lobber Crew. I'm just worried about how viable a defensive game will be when three of the new guilds have abilities centered around attacking.

The only one I really don't like is Batallion. Encouraging creature swarms usually isn't that fun in practice.

So this puts the Guild cards count to:

    Orzhov: 9

    Dimir: 8

    Gruul: 10

    Simic: 11

    Boros: 8

This includes unspoiled guild leaders and guildmages(for those guilds), the completions of the keyrunes, guildgates, and charms cycle.

At least it looks like they are 5 totally new cards
Whoops, I forgot the promos have alternate art.

Whispering Madness was a Sorcery. If you're point is that you have to have some variety, we have it. We have four creatures and one sorcery.

The Simic win at creature types forever.

    "Lizard Drake"

    "Bird Mutant"

    "Human Ooze"

    You can't compete with that.

Definitely a kid in a candy store at the moment, keep jumping from one card to another and ideas for each... ADD makes spoiler season interesting.

Thank god for extorting defenders, as well. Perfectly fits the Orzhov strategy.

Man I hope there are at least 2-3 good non-rare/mythic cipher cards for constructed. They can't all be so overcosted, right?

The new shaman will fit in well in the Modern Shamanism deck. The equipment is probably busted - Captain of the Mists + Gilded Lotus + Illusionist's Bracers = Infinite mana. This slots in nicely with the Zealous/Lotus/Deadeye combo, too. I can see the angel being a decent card, maybe not as good as people think but very resilient.

Gateway Shade is insane in Limited.

I love Murder Investigation - the flavour is just...fantastic. Gridlock makes me think of Doctor Who, and a song. Experiment One has a cool name, and we all expected a 1/1 Evolver for 1. Cloudfin Raptor might be even better - it's like Hada Freeblade, except it flies. Zhur-Taa Swine will b great in Limited.

Angel seems sweet although I doubt it will be played outside of limited and EDH

Everything else seems neat, the Human Ooze is just hilarious can't wait to see more, really interested in finding out what those charms are

    But they will!

There'll probably be a busted one at mythic though.
