Standard playable? I'm not sure, but it certainly benefits from a lack of Gut Shot and Pyroclasm. Seems like a very fun card to break in casual formats though. Increasing Savagery with this is rather absurd.
I've never seen a trigger like this, so if someone could confirm:
-As I see it, you do *not* draw a card for each +1/1 counter, just each *time* a +1/1 counter is placed. This would lower the scavenge synergy.
I'm guessing it's the same as dies triggers. Combat damage or a Wrath of God still causes a trigger for each death. I'm unable to find any relevant rules in the CR and it could go either way, but I believe that the trigger would occur for each counter being placed on it. The difference between placing 1 +X/+X counter and placing X +1/+1 counters should matter in this instance.
The interaction with Undying Evil is also fairly unusual. It's possible that you get to draw a card based on the Melira rulings.
Hum. I wonder if this card is going to get you more than three cards a game, since that depends on Simic creatures' average power and toughness. As of now, I'm not terribly excited about it (an Archivist that grows and stops drawing cards after a while?), even though it's our first Simic rare. I'll hold off my judgment till we get more cards in the set.
EDIT: Then again, there are more ways than just Evolve to get counters, so you can do some silly things with Simic Guildmage. Just move the counters around and let shenanigans ensue.
You know, maybe it's because it's the guild that's getting most of the early spoilers, but the more I see and hear of the Simic, the more I think they are going to be the most awesome guild in the block. Just looking at all of the art, I feel a great desire to own every single GTC card with the Simic watermark. AND ONLY TWO HAVE BEEN SPOILED (not counting the Shockland and Guildgate)!

Someday, I will own all of the dragons. All of them. 43/111, approximately 39% complete. Over a third done.
(calling it now; there will be a cycle of Legendary dual lands with Basic Land types in Theros block)

That's how I read it- it doesn't say "for each counter" or anything like that.
(How I read it, I'm not a judge or anything) whenever a +1/+1 counter is placed on it draw a card. So if you have something that puts 5, +1/+1 counters it will trigger 5 times (even though the card says "put x counters on it") once those are put on the card the card will trigger the draw 5 times.
It's an interesting card, seems way over priced. (4 mana for 1/1 is really weak, even though effect cool/good also has no evasion/protection).

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."
"Whenever a +1/+1 counter is placed" vs "whenever +1/+1 counters are placed." It's just like an ability that says "whenever you draw a card" will trigger four times off Tidings.
"Whenever a +1/+1 counter is placed" vs "whenever +1/+1 counters are placed." It's just like an ability that says "whenever you draw a card" will trigger four times off Tidings.
That was my initial thinking but there is a key difference between them.
120.2. Cards may only be drawn one at a time. If a player is instructed to draw multiple cards, that player performs that many individual card draws.
I think it still works the way you said, but card draw triggers have this additional rule to help them.
The card is merely average. At 4 mana he just acts like a slower, less reliable version of Phyrexian Arena. You aren't going to want to attack with him often because you don't want to risk throwing away his drawing ability.
It is potentially a bomb in sealed, just average in draft, and unplayable in constructed. If Bloodgift Demon isn't getting played in standard, this isn't either.
Oh man. I din't know what it is, but this card just works for me. The beautiful art, Evolve, draws cards, it's Simic, the 1/1 body is fragile for sure though. Somehow this week just got a lot better.
However, in today's culture of Justin Bieber, Jersey Shore, and Twilight, where every song on the radio, every program on television and every site on the internet is just another monument to the pinnacle of human stupidity, it's certainly not the worst thing that people could be watching.

What you are about to read the absolute truth about the deck that once nearly killed WotC's revenue.

Ok, so this confirms that Simic if clearly the best guild in Ravnica.
I don't think it's going to break any formats, but a bant deck could make it fun, Common Bond, Travel Preparations.
A solid card.
Rakdos/Selesnya decks will have you dead before you ever get this guy out.
I think the card is cool and interesting, but I don't think it is going to break a format in half yet. Besides, we have yet to see what any of the other guilds do yet. Not sold on a mechanic that requires me to have other things in order for it to work. Seems really bad to me.

If this is real...? Dear god, I hope it's not. While not pack rat power level, it would quickly get out of hand. Turn 5 attack with your weenie and let it die, play this, play Hunger of the Howlpack, draw three cards and have a 4/4 with evolve and its ability? Interesting
better yet, how about play it turn four, play pack rat on turn five, activate pack rat, discard a card, get a 2/2 rat, put a +1/+1 counter on the fathom mage and draw a card
turn six activate the pack rat 3 times to have 5 5/5 pack rats and a 5/5 fathom mage
I'm getting killed by turn 3? Wow standard is broken...
they'll be dropping 3/3s or Thundermaw hellkites while you play a do nothing card on turn 4. Four mana 1/1s are terrible.

Which is likely where this card has the greatest chance to do something awesome. Since we don't have the specifics of Evolve yet, I'm not sure if it checks P/T upon resolution as well. If it doesn't, then it will almost certainly be a powerful 1 of in Glory's Rise decks.
Does Mimeoplasm entering the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters equate to having counters placed on it? If so Fathom Mage is a prime reanimation target along with say Lord of Extinction in a Mimeoplasm or a Milloplasm edh.
(Based on the Dreg Mangler ruling, it does. I'll check Mimeo's rulings in a sec.)
If a creature you control would enter the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters on it, it enters with twice that many instead.
The way it is worded makes me think the Mimeoplasm entering the battlefield with those +1/+1 counters on it would also trigger the Fathom Mage ability... yes/no?

Well that just made this card worth packing. Also use this with Simic Fluxmage and you start a system of sorts.
I guess I'm going to have to build that Experimental Kraj deck I've been putting off.

An interesting thought, but where will you get all of that mana? Unless you're in limited, a deck probably has better things to do.
