The fact instant creature removal does nothing against it (providing you untap with it) is a big plus. Throw a spellskite in there for some fun and it seems good.
Aye, mind the skite would mostly be protecting the crank, not the guildmage, cuz of that whole removal-doesn't-matter thing. And I'm not sure how much protecting a crank is worth, but skites proven to be decent enough at the role, plus letting you spread it out more safely over turns and all
And you don't need to untap with it! He can go off at 5-9 mana without passing priority!
Very nice card, though I feel that he should have been the original Dimir Guildmage somehow.
For those playing in 'older' formats, a classic card to include would be... Muddle the Mixture. Can fetch either the Mage or the Crank (IIRC), and can protect either from spell removal.
Spot on! I couldn't remember the name. But the fact it fetches both is what makes it especially amazing here. Most of the other combos that people use muddle in, it only fetches 1 pieces, like painters servant, iirc. Well besides sword/thopter
I really wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a top deck or banned, given wizards historical hate for combo in modern, sword is after all
The trick with this guy, as with many combo decks, is making sure you have a win con that doesn't rely on just one cog.
SPlinter twin is only viable because it has up to 8 of each piece, giving redundancy. If you're back up plan to win with this guy is just to mill them out... well... mill has never been any good.

YMTC: We need a spikey red enchantment. My creations:
RR
Whenever a player taps a nonbasic land, [Card] deals 2 damage to them.
-or-
R
Whenever a player would gain life, flip a coin. If heads, that player loses that much life instead. If tails sacrifice [card] and that player gains that life as per usual.
How come all the guildmages just reek of awesomeness. I can definitely see this guy being a pack 1 pick 1 in limited, and standard will need to adjust to him. With the Simic looking sweet as well the pressure is on, Sunhome Guildmage you better step up.
Making milling interesting by making them part of the "number of cards that went to the yard" or "number of cards in the yard" resource counting. I just wish we got some "graveyard from anywhere but not broken" version of Gravestorm as dimir mechanic. Cipher now feels like a really rushed mechanic that has more potential in another block.
awesome sauce! i might finally get around to making that mill-everyone EDH deck i've had tumbling about in the back of my head for a year or so. although i guess it'll have to go back to being BUG (mimeoplasm) or UB (szadek or lazav) rather than UR (niv mizzet).
my foiley Dreamborne Muse will have someone new to play with (alongside Jace and his Archivist, Mesmeric Orb, Mindcrank, Windfall, etc)!

Yeah, this. The mindcrank combo just isn't viable in Modern because all the filtering effects are banned, you can't reliably find your combo pieces.
It might see play in Legacy though. There you have LED to accelerate it out and unlike Painter/Grindstone, this can't be stopped by creature removal.
Personally, I'm hoping this doesn't become a huge modern thing. I'm on a bit of a tight budget, so a fun combo based on cheap uncommons is right up my alley. Hoping the prices don't suddenly balloon, I'd like to play it.
As said, activate it 2 times so the first time you mill its allready deadly.
Might be a "real" combo for standard, it has a good potential and nice ways to be quite deadly.
A combo cannot revolve areound a 2/2 with no protection.
Seems rather hoaky at best. You are generally using large amounts of mana to mill some one in the first now add 3 on top of that. In limited you could have already won the game with mill before the damage kills them.
So far these guild mages are very weak compared to RtR.
worst guildmage so far IMO. the izzet one was not usually first or second pickable, but this one only works in heavy mill dedicated decks. I guess it is possible in draft, but I wonder how often he will be good in sealed? 2 mana 2/2s usually make the cut but his ability wont matter so much until late late game when you can spend 7 mana to hit them for 2.

Mindcranks are $0.35, unless anything has changed, and they *will* go up no matter how janky or godly this combo is.
Btw, ghost quarter seems like it would be excellent in this deck, it can start the combo for the equivalent of 1

oh, I'm aware that it'll go up, but I'd be much happier if it stayed a casual/edh thing and stayed around a dollar or two, as opposed to 5 or 6 if it becomes a modern/legacy thing.
Having an Invisible Stalker equipped with Trepanation Blade could potentially be instant death too; just depends how many activations you can afford and how many cards get milled.

Well $0.49 preorders on this and $0.35 on its complement, I don't even play this game but it looks a lot less pricey a deck than 4x $50 primevals or walletslayers or whatever they hit

Wizards print good rares, players complain about cash grab. They print underwhelming rares, players complain that the cards suck. They spoil the best cards first, players complain about the insane prices of preorders. They spoil the meh cards first, players complain that this is the worst set ever.
So. I think I understand now.
As far as these forums are concerned, WotC can never do anything good because:
Card that is new and probably good = "pushed"
Card that is new and probably bad = "EDH/casual fodder"
Card that is a reprint = "lazy"
Card that is a better version of an older card = "power creep"
Card that is a weaker version of an older card = "worthless"
lol jace off the shelves on ebay and tcg I was watching got myself 4 regular and 2 foil (45 for the 4, 16 for the foils). These are gonna spike sooooo high.

The prices on Magic Online are also rising. Didnt want to spend money this month on Magic but it looks like I have no choice. dont want to pay the double amount of cash once Gatecrash is out
I like the Mindcrank combo deck, I really want it to work. It's just that the Undisputed Top Dog of Modern, the deck with the near 50% of the field presence has both a brutal anti-combo and anti-creature plan. Jund is why Splinter Twin is currently cowering in fear.
The fact that you can play through targeted kill spells (as long as you get an activation of his first ability off before or in response to the kill, the effect sticks whether or not he's in play) is huge for the playability of the combo in constructed. It might mean that you need to wait until you can pay 1UUBB as opposed to just 1UB so you can cast and activate him in one turn to be safe, but a possible turn 4/5 combo kill that only needs 2 cards and is hard to reliably disrupt can be pretty darned strong.

If that's true, they really need to try banning cards that aren't Blue or White for a change.

I don't know enough about Jund as a deck to be an authority on its place in the Modern meta, but being R/G gives it access to one card that would potentially give this deck fits, ancient grudge. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Jund already runs the grudge in its SB as is.

Muddle the Mixture? Shred Memory?
Yeah combo took a bruising in modern from all those bans, but both pieces are 2 CMC, so....

They also bumped up the price on Jace 3... go figure
Now, if only they would actually *have* these $1.50 High Priest of Penance they keep advertising...
