Looks like Orzhova, the Church of Deals from the original Ravnica block gave us all a hint about what the mechanic would be. I wonder if they will have a land similar to it in Gatecrash, except with the Extort mechanic instead?
Gonna say it right now: if this ability didn't cost anything, it would be good OR if you had multiple instances of it and only had to pay ONCE, it would be good.
As it is, it is subpar and very disappointing. Guess I'll play Exalted Orzhov...
If it didn't cost anything or if you only paid once to use all of your Extort triggers, the mechanic would be absolutely insane. As is, it's a solid piece of a control deck's puzzle.
This mechanic seems trashy really. It is extremely build around. Your properly built deck shouldn't be floating mana that you can sink into this mechanic.
soo this means that the DIMIR will have a more versatile one?
Hopefully so, MaRo mentioned on his tumblr that Dimir had a milling theme, so hopefully we will get something interesting and not straight mill, which would be disappointing.
On the subject of the art, i love how gross he is, all veiny, but still semi regal.
This cross Hippo/elephant, generic skin guy, and something else is great,
really conveys an orzhov beast of burden, one that no one will want to touch,
fitting for a "bank truck".

Personally, I'm hoping the extort cost is based on the colors of the card. That way it can, potentially, be reused down the line in other colors.
Like Evolve, I feel like Extort will live or die based on the sorts of abilities its paired with. By itself, it's nothing special, but with the right synergies it could be pretty great.
That is probably the best idea I've heard about extort. If it's printed like that I will be even more pleased with the mechanic.

People really underestimate effects like this. Just look at Blood Artist. Depending on how many Extort playables there are, this could be really strong.

really hoping for a cheap defender or two with extort, personally. I play a lot of free for all multiplayer, and can already dream up a fun deck of extort cards, pillory of the sleepless, syphon soul, and others...
I really like the flavor of Orzhov in general. A "church" that tries to help the economy by borrowing and loaning, who will take your soul if you renig on your debt. That is just 100% bad-ass to me.
I opened one last year, got two crap worldwake packs and 8x scathe zombies, which I promptly hid around my sister's apartment for her roommates to find. But, yeah, it was a piece of crap.
You, sir, have just won the internet. Congratulations.
This mechanic makes think twice absolutely bananas. EoT, Think Twice, pay for two extort triggers (requires set up, but doable), shock them and gain 2 and draw a card? Instant speed, 4 mana (not inconceivable) makes every Think Twice like a mini Sphinx's Revelation.

If this ability triggers multiple times this is ridiculously overpowered. You cast gravecrawler and then drainlife your opponent for mana -1 every turn. No.
That would give everyone one of your spells Kicker W/:draw a card. That is not printable because that it is broken powerful.
It might be a lil high in the mana cost but with Unburial Rites being in color for Orzhov this could happen with a lil splash of blue. Drogskol Reaver would like to say hi.
I'm guessing the ability is actually "Whenever you cast a spell, you may pay [one mana of any of this permanent's colors]. If you do, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain that much life."
It isn't, because the reminder text on Treasury Thrull isn't that. Why do people always try to say that mechanics do something they obviously don't?
It seems like people are overlooking the fact that this thrull restocks your hand with more spells that you can use to trigger Extort.
This. Taking back your O-rings is good enough but being able to ping a life off of them on top is icing on the cake. Could even be nice with Judges Familiar. Pulling it out of the grave and then casting it for one mana and another ping. Repeatedly keep your opponent saving an extra mana per spell. Any card that requires sacking really.
not only is it a horrible mechanic which only gets any use in multiplayer, now everything with this stupid keyword on is going to be expensive.
orzhov is by far the most interesting guild, and yet wizards constantly mess up their mechanics.
i'm not impressed.
Pray tell me, what led you to that prediction? We have seen only one card from Orzhov and a 4/4 creature that can reclaim most permanents repeatably just by attacking would probably have been worth 5 or 6 mana under normal circumstances. I have yet to see any evidence that all things with Extort must be overcosted.
And yes, overload is generally also better in multiplayer, since the spells will hit more permanents. That hardly makes the mechanic useless in single player.
Multiple Instances of this ability work, like exalted, so i'm betting the Ghost Council will be something like "Creatures you control gain Extort (Multiple instances of Extort stack)"

Now, like all of the other mechanics, it depends on if they made anything playable.
If it didn't cost anything or if you only paid once to use all of your Extort triggers, the mechanic would be absolutely insane. As is, it's a solid piece of a control deck's puzzle.
Possibly one of the worst mechanics ever created.

My 'condition' is a trial. The weak are consumed by it. The strong transcend it.

All in all, I like the mechanic, though I do hope that not all the triggers are "lose 1, gain 1" however likely that may be.

I think that's a fairly solid bet. I wouldn't be too disappointed if they were.
Welcome to the Orzhov/Azorius overlap aura.
Exalted and this can work in the same deck. It's almost like they're building our decks for us, no?
I noticed that recently too. It's like, Unburial Rites? "Hey kids, let's try reanimator! Yay!"

Like the rest of the mechanics, I'll be waiting to see how this is fleshed out in the commons/uncommons before passing judgment.
