I'm sure people have already thought of this, but I can think of at least three ways to have fun with the Evolve mechanic. The first is to put it into a deck with something like Primal Forcemage so that the creatures entering play are bigger than the Evolve creatures already out. The second, which could combo with the first, is to use spells that drop multiple tokens at the same time like Elvish Promenade or Ajani, Caller of the Pride's ultimate; because they all hit at once, as long as the tokens have either P or T higher than the Evolve creatures when they hit Evolve would trigger once for each of them, potentially making the Evolve creatures much larger than the tokens. The third way is to use some sort of mass-flicker effect like Sudden Disappearance; much like example 2, all of the evolve triggers would occur at once for each other larger creature, potentially making them much larger than their counterparts. Sadly, these are a bit awkward to actually pull off, but interesting nonetheless.
If an Evolve creature grows larger while a trigger is still on the stack, it won't grow if it's already become larger than the creature that triggered it.

Luminum Can spoiled the Guild Mechanic without even knowing he did it.
Calling it now: 0/1 Llanowar Elves with Evolve at Uncommon/Rare. Also, not all that interesting mechanic although it is probably a house in casual as all your creatures will become big threats over time.
This would be borderline broken if true.
I mean having the potential problem of a 3/4 Llanowar Elf if it costs G or is well worth the small problem of starting as a 0/1.
It basically does everything you want an accelerant creature to do give you mana early then have potential use in the late game when you have more then enough mana.

Yes, that card would be absolutely broken.
I do, however, think the cards below could work. Notice how much weaker they are than the above, yet would still be decent.
Evolving Tree #1
Evolve, Defender T: Remove a +1/+1 counter from Evolving Tree and add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool.
0/1
Basically it would act as a Utopia Tree anytime you were able to cast a creature spell. If you don't need the extra mana it just sits as a growing wall. It would probably still need defender or else you could just use it as a beater with amazing versatility.
Another variation on the same card:
Evolving Tree #2
Evolve, Defender T: Remove X +1/+1 counters from Evolving Tree: Add X mana of any color to your mana pool. This mana can only be used to cast creature spells.
0/1
This one would obviously be much more powerful. It would allow you to super ramp into big creatures. But it could only be used on creature spells.
A troll with evolve that has a pay cost regen target creature with a 1/1 counter would be sweet. Been awhile since we had a decent creature that regens targets.
It's easy to create synergies between creatures with counters, talking about Simic, Graft is a great example. All the Graft creatures but Simic Initiate and Vigean Hydropon had some kind of synergy with the others.
That being said, new Rakdos plays with counters too and the synergy between creatures is completely unexistent.
I hope Simic brings us back those kind of creatures (it seems so, looking at that Fluxmage).
I think it is fake considering its casting cost isn't (U)(G) at the very least. The fact it has the guild mage title but without dual color which is uncharacteristic of Ravnica by far is amusing by itself. I would call the others real...but this spoiler I think is fake for that reason.

This is not a Guildmage, to start of. Also, Tower Drake is one of the many examples you could get from a guild card that is monocolored. Remember the once claimed fake Rootborn Defenses? Monocolored and guild-alligned.
The guildmage of the Simic will be called Zameck Guildmage, this is known info. Also, Guildmages are multicolored, and have multiple activated abilities.

@luminum_can If that's true I'm sorry to hear it, although I still think the mechanic will be good. I guess I figured it would work similarly to Cathar's Crusade, which works much better if you drop things into play all at once than one at a time since all of the targets "see" each other at once and thus all benefit. Oh well; I'm still looking forward to finding ways to use it.

Yeah, Evolve is worded so that it checks to see if the creature is bigger or not both when the ability triggers and when it resolves. If that condition isn't met at either time, no counter is added. Cathars' Crusade doesn't have any conditions other than looking for a creature entering the battlefield, which is why it's a lot more flexible in that kind of situation.
On topic, I'm afraid we're not going to see a competitive playable Evolve card, it's just so powerful if it's done right. If they make a good early drop, it can be devastating... but again, if they make expensive drops, what's the point? I like the ability, but I liked Detain too... and they destroyed it (for constructed) with awful creatures.
Some things that would be neat to see with Evolve:
A card that can remove +1/+1 counters, ideally at common or uncommon so you can get all tricksy with your Unleash dudes (suddenly, blockers). Also, would be nice with undying, even if a little durdly. I mean, Hex Parasite didn't exactly tear up Standard.
A creature with evolve that gets -X/-0 whenever another creature enters the battlefield.
A creature that gives another creature -X/-0 as it enters the battlefield.
Some cards with drastically mismatched P/Ts, like 1/7 or 4/1.
Flash dudes with high power or high toughness so you can trigger evolve at instant speed (I guess Restoration Angel works, but I'll never complain about more flash).
A guy that processes +1/+1 counters for an effect (mana, card draw, tapping dudes, regenerating, becoming unblockable, etc.)
Cards that gain abilities as they gain counters.
A defender with a high toughness that loses defender if its power gets high enough.

One of the Zonots *is* led by an aquatic troll,
so it's definitely possible.
An "aquatic troll" could be mono-green, though. I don't see any reason why a Troll with Evolve would have blue in its mana cost. Obviously the flavor connects it to that color, though.

Maybe he walks through Islands. The last one had trample, pumped itself while discarding and had regen. The Simic one crosses Islands, pumps itself evolving and regens it would be nice.

Cause he's a legendary guild champion in DM and gives all your critters hexproof? Seriously though a "marine troll" would mean hes U/G, think like the marine iguanas of the Golapagos Islands.

I think one of the major combos with Evolve is playing combinations of high power only and high toughness so that each benefits from future drops.
Personally, this calls into question as to whether or not Luminum Can is ACTUALLY Mark Rosewater or not...
Removing a +1/+1 counter would just be part of the cost.
I also figure that most of the lower rarity evolve cards will be N/N, if the GDS is anything to go by.
I never thought I would once say that, "OMG, Aquus Steed is IMBA". Well, it's said now. Off to buying me 18 playsets!
