Modern is still a format in which you don't need to have a 500$+ deck to win a SMALL, LOCAL tournament. You can easily win an FNM with Storm, Infect, Eggs, Mono White Martyr, RDW or Rakdos, or several other decks that are based almost entirely on commons and uncommons, and have relatively easy mana bases to either build or budget-substitute. You don't need a GP deck to win an FNM and if you metagame correctly you can beat the GP decks with cheap decks if you know what you're up against.

I'm always looking for foil Madcap Skills and Ghitu Fire-Eater, [trade thread link forthcoming]
Unless Wizards seriously address the issues of card prices then Modern FNM will be a joke for a long time at first since it will be pay to win.
With Standard people trade a lot and pay a comparatively small amount of money, so the majority can have all the cards they need. That is simply not the case with modern.
Wizards should not bow down before collectors, they should serve those who actually play the damn game. They should flood the market with Modern Masters. Tarmogoyf and pals should be $15, not $100
well this is false. do you know how much people spend per standard season to get singles? and those are the people that actually try hard to win. a fair amount of people who play standard sink tons of money into packs and boxes as their main means to get cards. for the price of a box, you can buy a good chunk of a modern deck. and, you can also trade for modern staples. go figure.

Why people keep going on about how expensive Tarmogoyf is, when you dont have to play Tarmogoyf? There are plenty of Modern decks that are cheaper if you want to netdeck, and if you want to be innovative then be innovative. There are new modern decks coming out all the time.
Flooding the market...yeah, great idea. Good thing youre not in charge of Wizards.

EIGHT WORDS you should know before you open your mouth. Tarm is viable in only a few decks.
It is not viable in my combo elf deck. Turn 3 or 4 my elves will get infinitely huge and laugh at tarmogoyf while hardcasting emrakul. Need I say more? Fine, I will..
There's a few different white decks that don't use tarmogoyf,
mono black is highly viable in modern.
rdw will use figure of destiny before it smirks at the tarmogoyf.
Oh, and there's Abrupt Decay and Dreadbore for Tarmogoyf and friends. Not only that there's pithing needles, path to exiles, and so many other things...
Tarmogoyf at his best is marginally better than a craw wurm and requires a lot of support to get even there. Where a combo elf deck that costs less than a tarmy can be about 5-10 times stronger. So yeah, Tarm is tough, but he's not the be all or end all and not even required to play.
this is great news! in my lgs they already have a monthly modern event and most of the people who go to the shop to play casually everyday always bring both a standard and a modern deck.
now the format will get even more popular, which means more opportunities for me to play my favourite deck: mono W kithkins!!

Clearly you've never fought against a well build combo elves deck. A friend of mine goes through half of his library on turn 3/4 capping it off by hard casting Emrakul very consistently.
@Kaiyla
White decks not using Tarmo was a bit random though.
Monoblack's best suite currently has been infect or aggro. MBC hasn't been so hot. Maybe some Orzhov love will help.
Sticking to topic:
HA! There was a reason my entire playgroup has shifted to Modern the moment it was announced! And I'm very happy I've already picked up my sets of Verdant Catacombs and Marsh Flats. Bought it for a little more than it was worth when I did, but cheaper than it's going for these days. Misty has shot up 40% already.
Now that the announcement is official I am quite happy I can play a constructed format that is much more diverse than Standard Friday nights and enjoy some Legacy Sundays and Wednesdays
I also found the missing pieces to WUR Delver in my old trade binder so I have a deck that isn't combo or Affinity to play with people

Good day.
Ah pithing needle. Stops tarmogoyf dead in his tracks.
"It dies to removal" is not a viable argument. Otherwise I could just rebuttal the removal with "but your removal loses to Kira."

Depends on the deck, the players and the standard. I have a bounce-mill deck that was standard legal at one point that can take on a lot of them...
My local store just started playing Modern on Tuesdays everyone loves it but Im beginning to suspect we have magic powers.
One night we discuss how Wizards should reprint Goyf and other Modern staples in like nonstandard packs. A day or two later Modern Masters is announced...
This past Tuesday "I wish Wizards would just make Modern an FNM event" and boom...
I shall only use this power for good... or to see naked ladies...

If we were back at SOM-ISD standard I would tell you not too hard (Delver is insane and arguably better than the modern counterpart).
Sadly it's unlikely our store will pick it up. We've only been doing Standard.
Got to agree that Tarmagoyf really is a big deal and saying it doesn't belong in mono white decks and elves is a joke.
Then again I just watched GP Chicago where the top 2 decks were Tarmagoyf Jund. Well Spirit Jund is the name since Tarmagoyf is a given.
Meh I'll go for Knight of the Reliquary over goyf any day. Gets larger than goyf could ever hope to be, and is in colors that can exploit that. Also, Path to Exile.

Also costs three mana, and requires two specific colours, so you would expect it to be stronger (which it isn't all of the time). There is a reason Tarmogoyf slots into so many more decks.

Oh I agree. But the point remains that if you don't have the $100 for a goyf, or whatever stupid level it hits soon, there's plenty of alternatives that are excellent.
That said I'm still going to try and get some goyfs because I want to convert my standard deck into something of a modern powerhouse.
Looks like it's time to invest in Robots. It's pretty inexpensive compared to a lot of the other Modern decks, and probably one of the better ones available.
KotR is better than Goyf in the right deck in Legacy, but when you consider that there's no Maze of Ith or Karakas in Modern, KotR just doesn't have as much utility.
Also, as a Legacy player and a collector, I have no issues with WotC reprinting modern staples, even if it means prices drop drastically for those cards. I'd like them to keep legacy prices semi-stable, since the duals force that into being a collectors format, but if it's a modern staple, like goyf, bob, thoughtseize, clique, mutavault, etc... I'm fine with the prices dropping.

They're not aiming to reduce the price on the secondary market, only to give those who don't already have one another shot at getting them.
In other words, the demand will remain largely the same.
Its a good move by WOTC to get the Modern format interest up. Even though stores are not obligated in anyway to hold Modern as the format for FNM it is nice to have it as an option. Not every store has draft or Standard either. Some run just one or the other.
It'd be nice if Modern could become relevant but it might be hard to garner enough interest week in week out to make it a regular FNM format for most stores. Standard will remain king as it moves the most product.
in my area hardly anyone shows up for Extended ... but standard and draft have a fair showing ... modern i think would attract more people ... because of it allowing more cards to pick from ... not every FNM is going to be filled with 1,000$ decks ... there will be plenty of home brew / rogue stuff as well being tried out.
All this is gonna do is make the Modern Masters packs sell even faster :/
this was my first thought too.
they'll have under estimated demand as they always do on these limited release things and not print enough, so prices will remain high, and climb higher. no problems solved.
