There is Goyfless green decks. And new players tend to be unable to get a good mana base in standard so why would it stop them now to attend? I think you should look at it the other way and pitch the idea that there is a format played now and then where the cards you played with your friends is legal. I hope that I'll never attend a FNM where every deck is a net deck from the latest GP.
There is no reason anyone can't play modern, there is always burn as a powerful budget deck.
you can basically play a standard deck with upgraded cards and still be quasi-competitive. like playing a delver shell with paths, and bam. somewhat competitive. hell, tempered steel is half way competitive in modern.

I speak in sarcasm because calling people ******* ******** is not allowed.
Living end is another competitive very budget friendly deck.
You can play Merfolks and be competitive.
You can play Affinity, tier 1, and take somehow a low budget.
One thing i really DO LOVE about modern is that it has lots of competitive archetypes. My local FNM metagame is so avrious that building a SV that's effective in every matchup is a mission: impossible.
But now seems like everybody think that modern = Jund. This is pretty clear when you look at how many ppl build it at tournaments. And that scares me a bit, because i have a fear that this can kill the meta (and the fun). If you think that to play modern you'll have to spend on Goyfs, it's a bias of yours, and it's pretty scary, as i said.
it only kills a meta if its unbeatable and ends up being many mirror matches.
But reprinting Onslaught fetches is likely to make fetches in general more accessible. I think he's trying to say that fetches are important for Modern, many players feel them out of their price range, and it's too soon to reprint the Zendikar fetches.
It's possible to reprint the Zendikar fetchlands when Gideon Jura and his Ravnica allies goes back to Zendikar to deal with the Eldrazi menace. Then on the last part of the block, when the plane of Zendikar have calmed down they can reprint the Onslaught fetchlands. This will signify that the lands are not erratic anymore due to the fetchlands having allied colors and not enemy colors like when the plane's balance was disturbed by the coming of the Eldrazi.
Mechanics play a bigger role in deciding whether something will be printed. They will not print any fetchlands next block because they don't want fetch -> shock to be a thing in standard.
I actually think there may be a strong disincentive for playing multiple colours in the next block, like Wasteland or some new strip mine type land.
Nope, not true. From what I can tell, he topped out at around $100.Also not true. Tarmogoyf was about $60 at its peak in Standard.
Nope. Tarmogoyf actually costs more now. Jace is about 2/3 of his old price.
Jace right now actually costs exactly what he cost at his height in standard - $100

Look at my name...what did you expect?
Thank you WOTC for introducing the Modern format, a format where all the whiners can enjoy a level playing field and where they can play with none of the best cards of all time!
a Smallpox deck should work. make it have a lot of control features, creatuers that come back all the time and a set of Dark confidants. It should be good but i dont know about great. I geuss that means a lot of playtesting.
The last modern event I was in, I took 3rd with my mono green elf combo deck. 2nd place was a highly insane zombie/pox build that took the game over from making the opponent sac everything over and over until they had nothing left while being pinged to death and having no cards in hand. It was nuts. Reminded me of an old necropotence deck back in the days of ice age. 1st was a w/u control deck.

I have to have a list. That deck sounds awesome, I have no idea how it would function though. Are there enough Pox effects? Are you recurring them somehow?
Unfortunately every try hard from Sacramento to Shanghai preaches from the top of their 27 lands + Mana Reflection that Tooth and Nail and Time Stretch are fine to play in the same turn but Armageddon is unfair.

I didn't play it. But I remember Bloodghast, smallpox, ugh... Dark Confidant.. Geralf's Messenger, Gravecrawler, Lily of the Veil, Thoughtsieze, and all kinds of other hand/creature control. With a sideboard using surgical extractions and other fun toys.
Top end was the abyssal persecutor and phyrexian obliterator.
here's a pox control primer. It looks extremely interesting, I always had fun with Death Cloud. I was planning to make RDW first, as it's cheap and I have most of the burn cards, but I really want to make a pox build as soon as possible.

BG deathcloud was my ish back in extended, I may try Modern out. I think all the cards I would need are legal, except for skeletal scrying, but I can probably live without it.

consider Plunge into Darkness for an effect sort of simillar to Skeletal scrying, but modern legal. Not sure if it really suits your needs, but it might.

For sure. Most of Legacy burn converts over no problem. And for what doesn't you can find adequate substitutes.

Really? Show me a list... Seriously, I'd love to play Mono B in modern, I'm not trolling.

There are variations of Haakon Rock which fit the description. Raven's Crime, Smallpox, Liliana of the Veil, and Death Cloud for hands/boards, while Haakon+Nameless Inversion, Gravecrawler, Life from the Loam, Bob, and Bloodghast rule the board state.
