WotC announced that Modern will become legal for sanctioning as a format for FNM starting in January 2013. The information came through on their WPN newsletter for this week.
I'll get a screenshot of the message in momentarily, as it is not quite yet up on their website for some reason.
Can all the people who said this wouldn't happen because "Wizards only supports their limited/standard cash cows" come and explain?

YMTC: We need a spikey red enchantment. My creations:

Whenever a player taps a nonbasic land, [Card] deals 2 damage to them.

R
Whenever a player would gain life, flip a coin. If heads, that player loses that much life instead. If tails sacrifice [card] and that player gains that life as per usual.
This is so sexy!!!!!!!!!! (repeat exclamation points!!)
I was just at GP Navy Pier and brought the wrong deck, against my instincts. I looked and saw that there are no real Modern tournaments in Illinois for-freaking-ever. FNM is going to be hott sexy times now.
I know, right?!
Glad I already bought most of the ones I wanted
On a somewhat related note, does anyone know why Jace, the Mind Sculptor has gone from $60 to $100 in the past year or so?
He's banned in practically everything, and I don't get it.

Thinking about it, I think the odds are fairly high that the first FNM with Modern will have a promo for all participants, just to get more people playing it. A nice uncommon or common or something...
Or if they haven't planned that, they really should (hint for the MTG brand team. You're welcome)

This. I want to get started into Modern and if they are giving away a cool promo it'll be a good push for me to do it, and I bet for many others too.
Having just broken into Modern, I must say this is nice to see. Sure it's no Legacy (Yes I understand this comment will get me some crap), but if a store or 2 around me has regular Modern FNMs I'll be happy.
Plus making rogue decks in Modern is probably the most fun in my opinion, so this will have me buying more into it... (More fun as in, bigger card pool than standard, won't get stomped as bad as legacy)

If your deck is 60 cards then you're playing with the best possible odds. 61? Probably won't alter your odds too much but we all know that 96% pure meth won't cut it next to Heisenberg's 99%.
While I'll ultimately be glad they did this, the short-term implications are irritating.
I really had much better uses for my money in the upcoming month.
EDH was already costing a boatload...

A bigger Modern push from WotC (once they confirm this, which I expect they will Extended is currently a sanctioned FNM format so adding in Modern makes sense), secondary market prices are going to rise, but what impact will this have, some stores just prefer to run Standard or Draft because it attracts more people, but there are also the eternal players who don't play Standard or Limited and this may attract them to Modern and FNM in general as they already own most of the Staples through Legacy, Vintage, etc
For the short term it means snag staples before the price hike! For the long term we'll see hopefully it doesn't just blow over like Extended did

Modern is played at GP's and PT's. People will see the decks and be like 'I want to play that!' and now they can at FNM. Also, drafting Modern Masters will ensure an extra revival halfway next year. They really did their planning well on this one. Initially it will probably have decent amount of people, then it will drop slowly, and then bam, Modern Masters and increase again.
I'm pretty sure it will stay at FNM and be played.

I agree for the most part, but Extended was pushed like Modern is now and well look what happened to it, I don't think Modern Masters will have the same impact everyone is hoping for Modern
I never said it won't stick at FNM I just said stores may opt not to run it as it may not attract as many people as Standard or Limited do, overall I think it is a great idea and may have me playing constructed at FNM again since I can play a good combo deck again (once I finally get the last few cards I am missing) or Affinity/Dredge at FNM

I'd expect many stores to start doing a "1st Friday of Month Modern" or something like that. My LGS has both draft and Standard on FNM with mid 30s for each. There are probably 30 modern players out of that whole group.
Enough to have some tourney's but those people won't go through near as many boosters as the standard or drafters.

Unless Wizards seriously address the issues of card prices then Modern FNM will be a joke for a long time at first since it will be pay to win.
With Standard people trade a lot and pay a comparatively small amount of money, so the majority can have all the cards they need. That is simply not the case with modern.
Wizards should not bow down before collectors, they should serve those who actually play the damn game. They should flood the market with Modern Masters. Tarmogoyf and pals should be $15, not $100
Agree with this. If a modern deck is going to cost me $1000 then I simply won't play the format. My standard deck already runs some staggering dollar amount, but if I want to switch to another one I can pretty easily (because I keep full sets of lands and staples on hand). This is simply not possible in modern without a whole lot of monetary investment through the secondary market.

It turns out that casting Wrath of God for 1 mana at instant speed is good. Jace helps that happen. It also goes great with Time Walk.

I'm 100% certain my regular LGS won't- they don't do anything other than Draft.
There's another place nearby that's been filling up both Standard and Draft at FNM;
I could see it getting big there.
I just wish this happened around the same time as MM releases,
as there will be an awkward gap between them during which prices go crazy.
And if they underprint MM, prices will *stay* crazy
