That...is wonderful. I'm sad that they ditched Izzet's bumbling mad scientist vibe for a more straightforward conniving mad scientist vibe though.
I feel ya, the wacky is gone from Izzet. looks like they finally got their act together, but that was the premise behind izzet, They never complete 1 thing because they constantly have new Ideas and experiments, but if one is ever completed it is a very very powerful one
I'd suggest it's that Mizzet is steering the guild to a specific task (as has been hinted at in the lore and izzet vs golgari backstory) and so it's not surprising that Izzet seems more focused this time around.
Other guilds like Golgari and Boros (according to the story) also seem to have undergone a shift in their style (though they had a change in leadership to help explain it).
Wow, really nice, although the 5 mana cost is a bit steep. But it could become overpowered at 4 and absolutely bonkers if it could target players... nice balance!
Similar to how you might run War Falcon in your sideboard as an anti-delver/flyer card I see this as an anti-control card in the form of a creature for the mirror match.
Play it like a 6 drop and draw 2 in response to removal? Sure not ideal, but you get 2 cards and they burn a card. If it survives well....your opponent will die to CA.
Really, I dunno guys 1 mana for 2 cards, that's an insanely powerful ability? If there's a cheap way to protect this....I don't think we should count it as limited fodder yet even with its crap stats.
I can easily see this card being the new lesser sphinx for control decks wtf does it matter it does to removal. Everything dies to dreadbore without regen or hexproof.
Yea Compare him to Olivia, hes this kind of Card. Sure Olive can do something marginal at 6+ mana the turn u play her but she really wants you to untap. Just overload their removal or side him in when they side out removal. I think hell see a lil play, his effect is to strong if left unchecked for 2+ turns. Games are often won by this kind of repeatable advantage, sometimes and some decks just wont have it.
Like him in Jhoria Commander where you can pitch overcosted things that will take to long to cast or suspend.

You cant actually do that unless you have some way to give it haste as it is a tap ability.

I guess you somehow gave this card haste right? Otherwise that doesn't work.
Art looks like it could be on a planeswalker, or at least on a legendary. Also could of been a nice commander for EDH. Actually it reminds me of a Havengul Lich, gives the same feel like it should of been legendary really.

Which is really the trick here... he'll have the biggest freaking target on him the moment he sticks. He's awesome, but I would think if you're able to keep him alive for a couple of turns, you've won the game... enough so that anyone who sees him will throw everything they have at him.
Not a "dies to removal" complaint... more of a "woah nelly be prepared if you're going to use him."
So a card draw engine AND a removal engine? I'd first pick a creature with either of his abilities, but both is insane. Takes over the game basically any time it isn't answered immediately.
No discussion here. It's a limited bomb, and nothing else.
A good way to test whether it would be good in standard is to add +1/+1 to the stats... if that doesn't make it broken, it's usually not good enough. (Barring some kind of immediate and unstoppable ability).

I fail completely to see the logic in this argument. Considering that some creatures don't attack at all (this one is a fine example), this test is simply ridiculous. Just tell me why would a 1/2 Blood Artist or 3/3 Talrand would have on the overall playability of the card.

Ah...crap. Sorry been out of the game for a while. >_< I was under the impression that cost abilities could be activated the turn you play. Embarrassing to admit.....but I forgot about summoning sickness for a moment.
Do you really expect this to be played more than Stormscape Master and the like? (I don't think so, even if the effects are cool)
This argument is about as flawed as one can get. That's like going to buy a new car and having the sales guy compare a Prius to a Gremlin. I mean, you wouldn't drive a Gremlin - why would you drive THAT???
I can def see this guy in a UR + X control deck. Problably Black with some hand destruction elements to clear the way for safe landings. His activated abilities are just that good.
Wow, he stole Ivy Valentine's gauntlets, what a kinky old dude
Be glad he settled for the gauntlets and isn't rocking her outfit as well...

Still, powerful ability.
Hey, it's red, haste effects are not uncommon... but yeah, if this guy had haste he'd sure be constructed material. Without haste, we'll have to wait and see how the meta shapes up, because 3 toughness and 5cmc is sure bound to some frustration from losing him without activating once...

I'm a Spike Vorthos - I love lore and flavor, but only if the cards are competition worthy.
woooooooooooow he's good. Come on Wizards, why can't you give this kind of love to all the guilds? I certainly hope he's part of a loose cycle like so many other cards spoiled.

Also, boy oh boy am I going to enjoy making a Niv-Mizzet, Dragongenius/Nin, the Pain Artist wizard edh deck. Etherium-Horn Sorcerer cascades into this guy
This is an improved Minotaur Illusionist.
What are you talking about? This is clearly Baron Von Munchausen
