"A card is considered functionally identical to another card if it has the same card type, subtypes, abilities, mana cost, power, and toughness." - Wizards of the Coast Official Reprint Policy
So it's a 5/5 for 4 (pretty good rate) and you can give something 6 +1/+1 counters if its in your yard for 6 mana, thats a free card worth of value. Card seems fine, doubt it will be meta defining or anything, but it's certainly not bad.

Just five counters; it looks at power apparently.
Power-level wise I guess it makes sense as a rare, but the design is so simple that it doesn't feel like a rare at all. This is literally "Undercosted vanilla card with keyword stapled onto it" at rare:\
Might see play in G/x beats, though 4 mana 5/5s aren't what they used to be. I like the mechanic though as it's essentially flashback for creatures. Free value is free value.

Agreed. I thought NWO meant rarity was defined by complexity, and it has been stated that the guild keywords are available at common.
Still, I'm interested to see what kind of synergies they give this at higher rarities (other than this poor example). The best synergy I can come up with is a creature with a useful sac effect and a cheap scavenge cost.
Yup. All it does is make dudes bigger, which is certainly Green, but it's not interesting. It gives your dudes more value which is always nice, but it feels kinda safe, ya know?
Is it really that surprising they would play it safe after giving Golgari the strongest mechanic last time?
It seems rather prudent to me, and I like the mechanic.
It could have *nasty* implications in a Jarad deck.

If it relies on power it doesn't look like it can go on non-creatures. That is odd considering all the mechanics except bloodthirst and replicate (the "creature" and "spell" guilds) were on both creatures and non-creatures.

Rarity is not defined by complexity - complexity is defined by rarity. The more complex a card, the higher the chance for it to be rare, sure, but they also don't want cards like this at common/uncommon in fear of them running rampant at Sealed. Would you enjoy someone who got 3 of these in their sealed pool opposed to you on the table?

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
For Commander, Ghave likes this guy b/c he has a way to get him into the graveyard. Animar doesn't mind him either, cheat out those fatties in a hurry.
I rather like scavenging as a mechanic, but I hope they do more with it then just vanilla with +1/+1 counters. On death triggers and "when ~ is scavenged" triggers would really liven up the mechanic. As it stands, it's neat but the creature's are glorified fodder. Though this is the first card, so here's to hoping there's a l;ot of Golgari support for it.

Wolfir Silverheart was a rare, despite just being the big version of Trusted Forcemage and Druid's Familiar. This looks like the same type of deal; there will be smaller dudes with scavenge. Actually, this guy is similar to Silverheart in a lot of ways and might fill a similar role. He has the same strength in being a big dude who can pump something up a lot, but the same drawback in being extremely prone to Vapor Snag and chumping.

Perhaps they're going back to uncommon release promos?
That would probably be a good thing. I'd rather get a good uncommon than a junk rare.
I really like this card. Imagine Scavenging the hell out of an Invisible Stalker. Or Birds. This has incredible game-ending potential. And if there's something with maybe Scavenge 1GG and 2 or 3 power? Ouch.
You've got to remember, it's the smaller ones you have to look out for.
This seems like the most accurate thing I've read. The mechanic isn't going to be a heinous broken Tinkerlotus of a mechanic. It'll be a sweet value mechanic that, on an efficiently-costed creature, will be constructed playable.
Also, its interaction with Persit in Modern is much more noteworthy than with Undying anywhere.

Can anyone see the creature type? Most probably it's a Giant given the name, but some certainity would be nice.

Oh, thanks! That makes it even more awesome.
Rare, if it's the release foil.

Jared when he was still alive was noted to use bugs and spiders to do his bidding.
Also the mechanic appears to not be solely related to counters, more like morbid maybe.
Edit: also noticed that it is a rare.
