In process of writing articles about MTG as a subculture delving into it from a sociological standpoint. If you know of a mtg site looking for a column like that, please private message me. Thanks
I apologize if someone already mentioned this, but a quick search didn't find any discussion on it - I'm a bit confused why WotC chose the wording they did. It would be much cleaner to say "exile this card from your graveyard and put 5 +1/+1 counters on target creature. Use this ability only as a sorcery."
Why the unnecessary wording of "x, where x is this creature's power"? Either there is some interaction I am unaware of/missing, or there may be a way to alter cards in the graveyard.
Is there some possibility to the latter? What kind of cards could alter a creature's power even after its in the graveyard? Thoughts?
My guess is that there are cards that will grant scavenge to or "scavenge" cards in the graveyard. This way those cards don't grant a specific scavenge amount, but instead give you a nice benefit for playing fatties the way green wants you too.
It has a power and toughness higher than it's casting cost. A 5/5 for 4 mana with no drawback is unplayable? Mid game this card is a beefy house. Late game it is still a house that can support your deck from the graveyard. This is a beefy midrange card. And should be evaluated as such.

My theory is a creature or enchantment that gives your creatures an ability similar to Skullbriar, basicly letting you keep recycling the same counters over and over making Scavenge slowly grow in potential.

That would be good with the -1/-1 counters, very powerful.
The scavenge mechanic says that of "...Where X is this card's power" because it'll be on many other creatures of different sizes, it's easier to read the same template for the ability in the place of changing a number on each change of power.
Also, creatures with asterisks (*) in their P/T also have the set value outside the game, so that can be another reason to have the X on the scavenge text.

But still I hope there is more than just +1/+1 counters, like draw cards or gain life. It would still give the feel of recycle.

this wording allows them to print a card similar to Sedris, the traitor king which will give other creatures scavenge, and still have it function so it adds counters equal to the creatures power.

Unfortunately I wouldn't count on it with the wording you have there. It would be neat to see effects like "when you scavenge ~, blah blah blah" or even something like a 1/1 with "scavenge Return a land card from your graveyard to your hand ()"

Well what I am trying to do is try to stay as close to the mechanic on Deadbridge as possible.
So maybe this land fetcher would read:
Scavenge~ Search your library for x basic land cards were x is the creatures power.(Too tired to write this full length).

Not worded exactly how the ability would be,but you may actually be onto something. The X may be representive of the ability always caring for a creatures power, but doing different things depending on the card. Draw X for power,Put X + counters,Target creature gets -X/-X untill endof turn, there is a whole lot of things that can be done with something like that.

If anything, I think the abilities of those cards you guys are creating would read:
Golgari Thing 3BG
Creature - Plant Zombie
Scavenge 4BG
Whenever you Scavenge Golgari Thing, you may draw 3 cards.

I dont know. The Plane chase preview had two effects, first was counters,2nd was saprolings for the combined power.
Something like this
Golgari Gravedigger
BB
Scavenge 3B: Return target creature with converted Mana cost X or less from the graveyard to the battle field, where X is this creatures power

At first I didn't understand what you were referring to, but then I understood and immediately grew excited, discovering that this mechanic may not be as narrow as we all had believed. I'm praying it's like the Ravnica Planechase 2012 Grand Ossuary; which woul make it way more interesting. Especially, of we get cards like:
Gravy Ghoul 4BG
Creature - Ugly Zombie
Gravy Ghouls power and toughness are equal to the number of creatures in all graveyards.
Scavenge 5BG Put X 1/1 saplings; equal to power.... You understand.
*/*
Even though it could work against you with scavenge, it would be very interesting to see asterics for variable p/t and various scavenging power.

Scavenge can't do anything besides what it says. Scavenge X is all the rules text for Scavenge. You can't redefine what Scavenge X does. That''s like trying to say "Miracle 2U (You may pay the Miracle cost by sacrificing a land as an additional cost)" Reminder text does nothing, you don't change the card by changing what reminder text says.

I think this is the most realistic application for building on scavenge; adding triggered effects when the creature's scavenge ability is activated.
The other ways would be interactions with +1/+1 counters (like spike feeder), permanents that modify cards in the GY (creature cards in your graveyard gain scavenge X where X is it's power/casting cost; or creature cards in your graveyard get +3/+0), or cards like Jarad where power/toughness matter.
Of course there's also self mill as an enabler.
For those upset that the mechanic was not oriented with reanimation: not every card for the guilds are based around the guild mechanic; there is plenty of room for reanimation and recycle effects in the RTR block sets.

Basically this. If they were going to do various things with Scavenge, it would have been an ability word instead of a keyword with reminder text. Reminder text is very static and fixed, modified only to adjust to the card type and cost it appears with so that it makes sense. It always gives the same instructions. Scavenge will put only +1/+1 counters on creatures. There's still plenty of space for interesting designs with it though. Maybe Golgari have a subtheme of using +1/+1 counters anyways.
Its in the reminder text guys. Have you ever seen flying reminder text say anything other than cant be blocked except by creature with reach and/or flying? Wording nay not be exact, but it has never said flying (when this creature enters play draw three cards). Has it? Think guys.
The ability will say scavenge x(blah blah blah) when you pay the scavenge cost do x. Exact wording may be off slightly as well. Thats the ONLY way this ability will do anything other than put counters somewhere.
Also where are some of you getting this info about what counters are to be used? Do you really think they think ok we had + counters so now we have to do - counters? No guys. It has nothing to do with anything. Only 2 blocks can exist in 1 standard season at a time so it makes no difference to them. Notice the power level of certain blocks. Ala for example. Of course they would use - counters close to there. They wont take a poeerful set and combine that with +s. That is the only thing they look at.
So what metatog is saying it could be like island cycle . As opposed to just cycle. ? We might see card salvage draw x cards. Or perhaps land salvage seach ur libary for a basic land
