That Serra Avatar artwork was in this Magic Arcana with the caption "Alternate-Art Serra Avatar Magic Online Avatar | Magic Online Live! Award" but was later taken down (source). Not sure what this means but I am skeptical that it's M13 art
I once farted during the final match for prizes at an FNM. It was a tense moment, everything was quiet, control vs control, I was about to mana leak, thought about it.. and farted. Then mana leaked.
Is Serra Avatar on the no-reprint list? So either they're breaking their own rules, or this is complete horse puckie... (trust me, I'd love to see it reprinted, but w/ the list - I call fake).

So they're going back to having Duels opponents who aren't planeswalkers? I guess it makes some sense since each of the campaign duels takes place on a particular plane, now. That implies that Talrand is a native of Shandalar, then, since that's the plane where his duel takes place, apparently.
Thank God... There are cards on there I'd like to see reprinted.
It's not going to be changed at any point in the future, if that's what you're hoping. There may have been changes made at some point in the past (I'm not sure if that's the case or not) but Wizards has been very firm on their stance to honor it exactly as it is going forward.

Could Captain of the Watch be a decent finisher in control (assuming the titans are gone)? It works rather well with Timely Reinforcements. And I wouldn't be shocked if Ajani made Soldier tokens.

If Ajani is making tokens it seems most likely they'd be Cats. He doesn't really have any association with any soldiers or army, as Elspeth and Gideon do.
Is there something I'm missing about the vanilla mythic? I understand why people like the card but it is somewhere between uncommon and rare to me in terms of power level. Is it just a nostalgia thing, or what? Is a huge chumpable fatty what white decks need these days, or is the super-opressive lifegain deck that never existed coming back to power? The merfolk guy is more mythic to me than the avatar. I Like my mythics to give off a "answer me or die" kinda vibe. All you have to do to make the avatar laughable is hit your opponent. Doesn't get it.jpg

Plenty of people are more than satisfied with just sheer size, even without any other abilities. This is a card for them (and for people who want to use it with Fling).

Not everyone is like you. Not all mythics are going to meet everyone's criteria.
I just checked and the original Urza Serra Avatar is selling for 8 bucks and the foils are like $15.
I don't know if i'm missing something but is it just super popular with the casual crowd or some kind of EDH card?
Its hard to imagine this thing seeing play without evasion or an ETB ability..
Fat card and really good in casual lifegain decks, good with Fling, awesome in EDH, old card with smaller supply. I wish it had lifelink or at least vigilance so it might see some play but I don't think it will. I just traded for one too :\

Don't get me wrong; the card is super fun, interesting, and seems to have a history, but it just seems inconsistent with most other mythics. The existence of titans, most of the praetors, the dual color monster lines of INN/DKA, every planeswalker, the list goes on... I just see that there is a precedent for rarity/power level, and I like to see the mouthwatering cards at mythic. I don't like when they go into the unplayable binder forever. A mythic should make you nervous and make a thud when it hits the table. I don't see that happening with this card because it just doesn't have that power level (usually), and because no one will play with it outside of commander. There, it's pretty ridiculous. (just use serra ascendant?)

[edit nm, he's got 3 abilities, my bad.]
I used to write cube articles on StarCityGames, now for GatheringMagic and podcast about cube (w/Antknee42.)
Good catch.
Well, let's hope that those 2 abilities are awesome.
..or they could just be re-using art?
They do that a lot you know.
Nope, not on the reserve list...Serra's Sanctum is though

No. Serra's Sanctum is.
Oh, and obligatory WOOOOOOO!!!!! to new PW. I hope that new walkers aren't the only selling point of the set.
EDIT: 'nathed
But I thought all rares from set "X" and earlier were on the list?

I think that was the case at one point but it has been pruned of stuff, not sure really. There are really odd things on the list, some uncommons even.

Lots of casual players love huge creatures. Just like casual's love of tokens and counters keep Doubling Season at a high price.
