If you didn't have fun at the prerelease, I think you should consider not playing Magic anymore, because the prerelease is everything that's fun about the game.
This was my first prerelease ever, and I had plenty fun, even though I went 1-4.
When the Helvault was opened, I was kinda disappointed that it was just some oversized cards, die, and tokens. The previews made it out like the **** inside was going to be OMGWTFBBQ epic. But hey, I got extra free stuff, right?
Then I log on here and see this thread.
It's not that I'm mad about not getting xyz ultra mythic rare foil tourney judge card that's worth $500 bajillion dollars. It's that I specifically went to the Helvault event to a. enjoy the new cards, and b. get something wicked awesome out of the vault.
Basically, it's disappointing to find out that instead of getting a free hubcap, you could have received a Model T convertible limo tricked out with hidden rocket launchers and a built-in cooler filled with cream soda.
Our LGSs had one friday at midnight, saturday during the day, and will have one sunday afternoon and one during the evening.
I dont know the contents of the sunday vaults yet obviously but the midnight was all the same we know foiled and judge promo vindicates. Easily the 54 claims but the stack looked to be about a full 60 sleeved cards tall so i wouldnt be surprised if it was a higher count.
the saturday event had all the normal stuff nonfoil.
I will respond or edit this post when I receive info on the two vaults from sunday.
The contents of the Helvault were not "free" to players. You had to buy into the tournament at $25+ to have a shot at getting anything in the 'vault. And because WotC hyped it up so big, several people decided to plop down their $$$ primarily to get some 'vault goodies.
There is absolutely no defense for the way WotC handled this. It's like the GenCon FTV stupidity all over again.
ITT: People only play in events to make money in either hard cash or card value.
Enjoy trying to make money at playing a freaking game :D.
I have nothing against taking the game seriously and trying to play at a high level but this game was not built on increasing your wallet or card value pool while you're playing at every FNM or Pre-Release.
The guy across from me busted a Foil Temporal Mastery I didn't spit in his face and blame Wizards for it :).
And dont give me that "oh it was free don't complain" crap. I'm sure if you were given a free bag of dog **** you'd be upset..especially finding out that someone else got a free stack of $100 dollar bills.
Go to the midnight prerelease right after a closing shift at work, don't pull a single card you wanted from the set (while your friends all pull several mythics, you not pulling any, including almost every card you wanted), do ok-ish in the event, pull jank from your prize packs (while others pull walkers, devils, and time walks), get your ho-hum useless helvault prizes...and then find out other people got $100 demonic tutor foils.

Did you just say Judge Promo Vindicates?!?! Seething in jealously right now.
The hellvault is obviously upsetting to some people. It was kinda dumb to begin with.
They suddenly stopped giving away desirable mythics at prereleases (remember sun titan, wurmcoil engine, hero of bladehold, vampire nocturnous, and emrakul) and started giving away standard rare fodder. I mean at least make the rare a cavern of souls or a vexing devil or something useable. No one will every play the spear outside of EDH and even then it may be unlikely.
They are a company that wants to make money and one of the most in demand products they have (FTVs) they don't print many of. Its like they don't want our money, cause i know i would buy 4 of the FTVs. Instead they create a product that they let the dealers sell for x3 times MSRP. It's basically WOTC selling singles to the stores for resale at this point.
The size of the prereleases since they turned it over to the stores is a massive disappointment. In NYC there are CONSTANTLY players who can't even play in the prereleases because there are far more players than there are locations and available slots to play. I had to wake up at 9 to wait in line to get a ticket to play in a tourney that didn't start until well after noon, and couldn't even hang out in the store for that time because it was not open yet.

Posting the bad cards from old pre-releases is as easy as posting the good ones :).
But hey keep living in a dream world where before they dropped the rarity of pre-release cards to rares every pre-release card was 100% competitive playable.
The least they could have done is make all the oversized cards foils.
I don't even need a judge promo card, but the fact that some people have oversized foil gisela instead of regular oversized gisela like me makes me sad.
That being said, the dice were sweet and the vault was cool. Had lots of fun.:D
Although almost any other rare than the spear for the prerelease promo would have been better...

So you're upset *someone* opened better cards and/or you didn't open anything good from booster packs? Seriously? How in the hell is that WOTC's fault? I

Almost every decision WotC has made since Shards of Alara has been detrimental to the players. The introduction of mythics, the severe neutering of prereleases, the abolishing of MPR, the introduction of "large 3rd" sets and ancillary products (despite saying that they were going to print fewer cards each year to help keep the game affordable for players), etc.
What happened to being happy for others? My first reaction was that it was pretty neat to throw in foils but everyone on here is throwing a fit.
It's the me first society that we live in these days.
Everyone doesn't give a **** about anyone but themselves the only exceptions to these rules is if they know you personally.
I think most people on the planet would probably rather see 100 random people killed, assuming the person would be guaranteed not a single one of them would be someone they know if it would save their own life.
Apparently Spock's other famous quotation (not live long and prosper or anything about logic) went over everyone's head.

Yep i would, i would killed a hundred person so i can live another day with my daughter
That's life man, i give a **** about other people but i would do anything to stay alive and support my family.
Note: I've been killing Wizards over the Helvault contents in another thread.
Can I say that this pisses me off more? Not because I didn't get free **** or cooler **** than I ultimately got. It's the reality that, in some places, everyone went home with amazing stuff, and, in most others, it was the ho-hum version.
Would it have killed Wizards to divide all the cool stuff - judge foils, foil tokens, foil oversized, etc. - amongst a majority of the Helvaults, with instructions to provide certain items to the winners, and certain items to people who actually kept track of all that stuff on the card for opening the thing in the first place? Most people at my prerelease didn't bother with it. (I wrote a note on mine that would net me multiple infractions on MTGS. )
Wizards, if you're going to do random awesome things like that, you have to distribute them far more equitably amongst the player base! Man, would I be sore as hell if I had two choices of prerelease, chose one, and found out everyone at the other walked out with free stuff a million times more awesome than what I got.
EDIT: The Zendikar "hidden treasures" promotion was FAR more equitable than this.

The fact that everything was concentrated into a select few Helvaults is bad. If some Helvaults had judge foils, some had foil tokens, and some had foil oversized cards, it would have been slightly better.
Don't forget making what appears to be the same mistakes from ROE with this new set even thought they said they learned from there mistakes. Zombies as a tribe were like completely forgotten in set 3 of this block (and werewolves are gone) and really it seems like humans were the only tribe to really get new tribal stuff.
Planeswalker points... Not that the old system was working but this new system seems like trash to me.
They killed magic player rewards (which I loved and which got me out to my LGS much more) and promised to replace it with something, but I have yet to see that something.
Don't get me wrong, love the game, but all this extra "stuff" keeps backfiring. Maybe they should stop spending so much money in the special events department and try to lower prices on the cards, I feel like I would trade in all the alternate art FNM commons that I would ever get for cheaper pack prices.
This could cause major problems for stores down the line as well because of the perceptions of players.
Possibly, however, I believe that the selection of the particular store was random. There is another store in town that WotC absolutely LOVES (e.g. they were one of the stores that got a piece of Jace, the Mindsculptor when it was being revealed in segments). The store that got the sweet helvault is one of the least popular magic venues in town.
