I had originally joked with him that he should take the empty Helvault from the 1st tournament and fill it with some absolutely disappointing prize (my suggestion was a few packages of Circus Peanuts and stale Big League Chew/Bazooka Joe bubble gum) to troll all the players of the 2nd tournament.
After hearing that the Helvault prizes are just oversized cards and dice, I think I'd actually prefer the Circus Peanuts and Bazooka Joe. At least I could eat those.
Wizards really dropped the ball. Simply by virtue of going to the extra expense and effort of shipping big cool Helvault containers it was greatly implied that the swag inside is going to be something special/desirable/epic. Even amongst all the EDH/casual players I know (myself included), nobody uses oversized cards for anything. Boo-urns.
Yes, thank you wizards! I have restrained myself from buying anything since Innestrad, and I was worried that they were going to give out Avacyn and Griselbrand at the prerelease, which would have broken my resolve. However, with this garbage, I can safely maintain my embargo.
I stopped going to prerelease since they stopped the midnight events and the drafts, two really fun ways to play magic and being able to spend nearly an entire night and day of it.. crazy, i know.
/Rant on
They just slowly cut more and more, making it hard to really enjoy a prerelease. Instead of being a fun night (or day now I guess), of playing magic and getting to do as many events as possible and different formats, they've limited them and cut one of the biggest lures, mythic promos.
Year by year, they cut more and more. Replacing player reward cards with terrible promos, removing TO's ability to host events, and cutting/restricting when/where events can be held.
It's really sad that there was much more incentive to go to these events 7-8 years ago, then now. Now, it's just large pieces of cardboard I'll never use. No casual player will either. Most people I know, just toss their oversized cards (I did, however, make awesome beer coasters out of mine).
/rant off.
Do we deserve good stuff and promos as incentives to join? Well... yea. We're customers and probably the best advertisers to the game. We bring our little brothers out, we mention it to our friends, we meet with rolling eyes of our wives/girlfriends (some of us bring them out to join), we buy packs or help out new players with old cards.... Magic, the game, is full of helpful paper crack pushers. we've done much more for this game than any advertiser would... it feels like throwing us a small "thanks" for our efforts would be nice... and good business. You keep giving us incentives, and we keep showing our passion for this game.

You still get promos for showing up, Playable promos. The weird thing is that people got so hyped up even though they said they were stopping with Mythic Release Promos.

All the stores around here are doing midnight ones.
Would you like to trade for the descendent of kiyomaro or whatever POS promo I got at a prerelease I went to 8 years ago? I'm not sure what awesome cards anyone was getting back then.
Oh yeah, and I had to drive four hours to another state to go to one.

For the record they have not stopped midnight events as far as I am aware of , our store is doing one as they always have and then another at 2pm.
(And another shop is doing midnight and then 6pm about 30 mins away)

Color me disapointed. This just made ruined my excitement for the pre release. Sure my lgs is giving away a box to top 8. But really wizard you just unhyped it.
Would you like to trade for the descendent of kiyomaro or whatever POS promo I got at a prerelease I went to 8 years ago? I'm not sure what awesome cards anyone was getting back then.
This, I remember getting pretty much crap 7 or 8 years ago. And now you get crap, tokens and dice AND oversized crap! I mean at least they tried to make this one interesting guys, and really if you had super high expectations for the prize-support and paid extra signing up for the event blame yourself. Or your TO for being greedy and raising the price for the event.
Its a game, play it and have fun with it. If you don't want your helvault crap, give/trade it to someone who does or toss it in the recycling (for the environment guys!).
A 40 dollar mythic rare would constitute a must have 4 of that goes in many decks.
Stats About Mythics
-Mythics are on average 40% rarer than pre-mythic rares
(old blocks about 200 rares, Mythic blocks 35+ mythics)
-They are printing more new cards a year not less
(about 665 now vs. 630 in most pre-mythic block)
-To drop the value of a rare by $1 a mythic must go up $2
-In a 3 year time span deck prices doubled. I am petitioning for the removal of mythic rarity. Sig this to join the cause.
People seem to forget that the pre-release is about having fun playing in a limited event. If the quality of the free promo's is dictating whether you play in a magic event, you should probably re-evaluate why you play magic at all.

Exactly it seems like some only want to play in Limited to directly fuel their competitive decks in T2 or Modern or what have you.
Limited was never about that directly, I mean I don't ***** and moan when I don't bust cards that are worth 20+ bucks in limited while others do.
Okay, while so far we only know that there are oversized cards in Helvault, I'd like to say a few things...
So, my regional TO has just put some info regarding Helvault in a local forum, stressing about the limited amount of goodies in the Helvault, the limited amount of Helvaults altogether (once per flight...), and the way to get the goodies. Not sure if it's the same with ya guys (in a hurry, can't scan the thread right now), but my TO says that players need to complete achievements to get a goodie from the Helvault.
Simply put, my number one fear is that this can mess up the prerelease experience as people will try to do those zany achievements as well as trying to finish the game ASAP just to get the achievements and get the goodies (I, for one, am guilty for that, I admit, but I know many people are as guilty), and this... doesn't seem good. Wizards, don't do this. Or don;t do this again please.

My materials, shipped to me by Wizards, say that players need to complete achievements to break seals. Once all the seals have been broken, each player gets the same amount of prize support, or, at the very least, one of each prize. Whether you completed any achievements doesn't actually matter, according to my materials. Stores have quite a bit of latitude in terms of how they run their events.
This is, of course, assuming exactly 54 people attend.
The less whiny spoiled kids on the tourney, the better.
In a way, I agree, since I planned on going anyway and I do dislike whiners.
However, personally, I do feel a little miffed that they hyped it up so heavily, acting like we'd absolutely 'love it.' Sorry, WotC, but I think it's neat and would have been happier if you'd just have said "Hey, we're giving all this out as promo material for the prerelease." I feel like people would have complained less about being led on. I mean, after all, WotC didn't so much as whisper about the Zendikar promotion, and it was pretty great, so the fact they were hyping it was obviously going to get expectations unrealistically high.

Yes.
Fortunately for me, everyone in my meta knows about and is quite content with these promos. Since the store can only host about 30 people and most of us will get extra prizes, I'm going to give whatever extra goodies I get to my friends who can't make it.

I hope most achievements are based on personal hygiene and politeness, that's probably going to make the pre-release atleast 50% more enjoyable.
We already know what the achievements are, and they're mostly based on mechanics of the set. There are a few that are just random but they're all somehow related to the game or the player enjoying it and don't try to insult the players who make Magic successful.
I just hope people have washed themselves atleast 24 hours before an event so the entire store doesn't smell like dried-up sweat. It's disgusting and sickening, for almost everyone.
And I hope people will try their best not to be a social degenerate by choice by being rude and purposely annoying. There is no upside to being lame to everyone, unless you live in an imaginary world.
I have neither the skill to correctly and accurately analyze this set in the context of current and future formats after 12 hours of exposure, nor the hubris to delude myself into believing that I do.
Everyone should learn from this

If this was true I'm sure at least one guy that said "screw it it's worthless anyway" and opened their (real) helvault would've posted the good stuff.
