I'm loving the art of these horror pieces. Still, does anyone else think that digital, computer artwork is probably the last medium one should use for this theme and flavor? At the least, it shouldn't be so prevalent.
Waaaay too much obvious computer art. It looks too smooth .
The art in the first picture depicts Werewolves. The hair. The claws. The howling. They are not Vampires.
I cannot see why anyone is still convinced this is a picture of werewolves.
The shield has a silver mirror-sheen. The real hand--the one outside of the reflection--is a normal, untransformed humanoid hand. The creatures in the reflection are obviously obsessed and horrified by their mirror-images, which are a great deal more twisted than the arm being reflected. We already know from Innistrad lore that silver-backed mirrors reflect a vampire's true age and monstrousness without any glamer, and consequently they try to avoid them. The creatures all all wearing matching aristocratic outfits. All of this screams vampire.

Secondly, I'd like to point something out that has been missed. The art in the first picture is during the daytime. If there is anything out like that during the day--and transforming--I can't stress how bad that makes the situation for Humans.
If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
For Pete's sake, how about some common sense people?
Thinking the shield might give an ability to flip creature(s) blocked by or blocking equipped creature.
Cool artwork nonetheless

"communication is not just words, communication is architecture. Because, of course it is quite obvious, that a house, which would be built without the sense, without that desire for communication, would not look the way your house looks today." -Poe, House of Leaves
Current Type 2 deck: Snakes on a flying thing

Calling #1's card to be "Silver Shield". The focus is clearly on the fact that it's reflecting vampires, and they don't like that when silver's involved! (Any wagers on it being +toughness and "can't be blocked by vampires"?)
The one by David Rapoza with everyone at the campfire looking one way should totally be called: "What Was That?" (with question mark). Tell me I'm not right there.
Love the ones where the woman in the crypt (with the blue-fire torch) clearly just stabbed a vampire in the heart while she was asleep. Snake lady must also be a real charmer (see what I'm getting at there?).
Two of these arts win for horror though: the multi-tongued skaab, and the skeletal red hand over the girl's face. The latter still creeps me out.
I think it might be Mirror Shield and protection from creatures.
You're right. I don't want it to look anything like real life at all.
On that note, Magic needs a lot more Quentin Hoover, Rebecca Guay, and Tony DiTerlizzi, in no particular order.
I would just think that the artwork director for this block would want to utilize artists who aren't using digital as a medium since it is typically too clean. Horror artwork should be messy, "unclean," and grimy. I like digital/ computer-generated art, I just don't think it should be so prevalent for these sets. And I would love to see more Quinton Hoover. I miss that guy! And the Foglios, for that matter, but I know they had a falling out with Wizards or something. Too bad.

In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.

I disagree on the first part here. I've always been a believer that horror is scarier when it's more real, when it's more everyday, more regular. Then when everything goes bad, it's the feeling of... this could actually happen.
That's the impression I got from the art here, too, which is one reason I've loved Innistrad so much (and now these pictures, too).

Except your speculation isn't really based on anything except what you want to believe. We don't know what that shield is other then it is some type of metal. It could be silver, but silver isn't the only metal that can shine like that.
Yes, the hand outside the reflection isn't gnarled like the other hands but it still have the black claws/nails. From the majority of the vampire cards that you can see the hands in Inn. they look far more like humans in that they aren't long and black.
Now on to my facts that are in plain sight in the art. The guy on the left has fur. Look at all three of their eyes. Notice how they are all mono colored, black, with some white from reflections. Check out Merciless Predator and Howlpack of Estwald.Vampires of Inn are noted for their human like eyes except their gold iris. I will give you that Ironfang's eye is human like, and Bloodcrazed Neonate does have the glow like some of the werewolves. Could be a feeding thing, color of the sense or something else. My last point is how large the top and bottom fangs are on all of them. That fits the Merciless Predator look more so then Bloodcrazed Neonate.
Secondly, I'd like to point something out that has been missed. The art in the first picture is during the daytime. If there is anything out like that during the day--and transforming--I can't stress how bad that makes the situation for Humans.
The werewolves popping right back up after human were sure they killed them can't help either! lol:D
The bottom werewolf almost Has to be the legendary werewolf.
Reasoning? Well, it's on the boosters (as mentioned above), and if you notice, Karn is at the bottom of the New Phyrexia gallery; Liliana is at the bottom of the Innistrad gallery; Thus we can conclude that they always put an important character at the bottom.
Well there are plenty of uncommons and "interesting art, boring cards" art that get used on Boosters. I would think our Mythic werewolf would look QUITE a bit more MYTHIC... but they really all look alike.
Except your speculation isn't really based on anything except what you want to believe.
The facts that
-the shield is reflective
-the actual hand is untransformed, while the reflected creatures are warped
-and the art takes place in the daytime
have little to do with what I want to believe.
We've yet to see a picture of an Innistradi vampire's reflection, but the description we've been given by Wizards is that it shows a vampire's true age without glamer. That could easily explain the untransformed hand, the long unkempt hair and grizzled facial hair, the voidlike eyes, and the longer fangs, among other things (such as why the creatures are distressed by the reflection as opposed to killing the dude with the shield).
But if you guys want to throw Occam's razor out the window and believe this is a pack of vain werewolves mid-transformation whose reflections are transforming before their actual bodies do, and in the middle of the day for no apparent reason, that's your prerogative and you're welcome to it.
I'm assuming some of you live in poorly lit suburbs. Every once in a while take a nice trip to your driveway on a full moon and clear night. It's pretty darn bright out. Similar to the picture in question. I'm for certain that it's a bright night, and not day time.

The shield being reflective proves nothing. It could be made of silver, but we don't know that and the reflective argument is weak. At least when I ran into some parts of my explanation that may have had some holes in it, I stated it.
The hand shares the same shape, color and style of the others. It just happens to be in a open position and not a semi clinched one.
The full moon makes the change inevitable, but in fact, any strong emotion or traumatic experience can trigger a lycanthropic crisis and allow the transformation to occur.
Doesn't seem like daytime is an issue if provoked. That might explain the expressions too. Being aggravated to change and then having bones cracking would make most people look wild. While you're at it, take a look at the transformed eyes of the werewolves. One single solid color just like the guide states and unlike vampires...huh.
Don't you think if something showed a vampire's true age it might be more zombie-like then having heavy characteristics of werewolves? Granted they could be young vampires and not show much change at all, but catch someone closer to Sorin's age and oh boy.
I disagree on the first part here. I've always been a believer that horror is scarier when it's more real, when it's more everyday, more regular. Then when everything goes bad, it's the feeling of... this could actually happen.

That's not what I referring to. I agree with your sentiment about horror being obviously scarier if it is seen to be realistic, I just don't find most of the digital art to be depicted that way. Sometimes it can be, but usually I see digital art as so clean and glossy, that it isn't realistic; it comes off as cartoony. Artists like Komarck don't come off as cartoony. His work possesses a realism to it. I love his style and think both of his Sorin pieces are fantastic, even if the promotional piece is stronger IMO. Swanland is another digital artist I usually like, but his stuff isn't necessarily realistic. In fact, it isn't in the least. But it is stylized. It has that dirty, grimy, horrific feel I would expect from INN block.

People only say "I'm sure it was nothing" when they're sure it was something.
Exactly!

The clothes one is just poor. Take a look at Mayor of Avabruck, Civilized Scholar and Feeling of Dread. While the vamps like aristocratic outfits it is certainly not limited to them.
