right? i mean, the way steve argyle uses the computer to create art is pretty alright. its overly stylized and very generic, but it doesn't look... bad. enhancing art with the computer is great, it makes it pretty generic sometimes, but sometimes it works pretty well to make something stand out more. lately though this stuff is just... terrible. that promo art with nissa and sorin fighting eldrazi was some of the worst ever, and this new sorin art is almost on par with that abomination.
drew tucker's water color atrocities during fallen empires may not have been for everyone... but at least it had some style and uniqueness. i'm not saying it was by any means good, but i'd take that over this unmemorable trash.
I used to love Argyle's stuff. Most of it is still fine, but that Liliana of the Veil art? Does nothing for me. Argyle's work has that super-sleek, touched-by-a-computer glare all the time now. There's no subtlety to it whatsoever.
It would be cool if Sorin were a B/W PW. I'd prefer that to another plain black PW. It'd be a first. Plus, whatever he did, I'd probably put him in my Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter EDH that I'm currently working on. Here's hoping for Sorin being B/W.
I think the Sorin art is a pretty alright piece that was entirely ruined by that getup and the sword. Seriously, it looks very early 2000's, when putting everyone in pop-collar trench coats was all the rage. And the sword is awkward. It just looks like the artist is trying too hard to be cool.
I generally dislike Steve Argyle art because his people look like latex dolls and his hair looks like plastic. Actually almost everything looks plastic. It's great compositionally.
I really, really like those playmat colours and shapes. The contrast is great, and the texture is great. I'm not too sold on the rather boring and artificial posing of the vampire though. A shame because it might have been the first playmat I've wanted to buy immediately.

She's wearing a corset... of COURSE her boobs are going to be squished. That's what corsets do.
Edit: On closer examination, it's not obviously a corset, but everything about the design suggests it.
The breasts of a woman wearing a corset too small to contain them will swell. Do you see how her breasts flow naturally down into her outfit, despite the trim fit? Do you see how, barring the color scheme, you can't tell where her breasts end and the dress begins? See the funny angles that are her cleavage?
Trust me, I know squishboob. My sketches used to suffer from it all the time. You might like it, but it irks me.

Re: Ajani, Karn: Yes, those cards featured other colours, but more important than some leaves in the background is the colour of the walker themselves. I suppose my argument is rather weak with Ajani as the red in him is minimal (though reflected in his facial expression and stance), but Karn is primarily silver (as he's supposed to be), which is the colour that invokes artifactness (or at least colourless-ness).
Koth has orange in his cuts and deep red (arguably maroon or purple) in his waist-thing.
As for Sarkhan, you stated yourself that all that is the greyish is only in the background.
Ahh, I just realized why you were bringing up the backgrounds now-- I made the assumption that Sorin was W/B based on the background. Looking closer at the art though, I think the image as a whole invokes a "white" feeling. After all, he is standing in a bright background, as if being presented as some kind of hero. The white spark at his finger also helps convey W/B-ness too.
I won't be placing any bets anytime soon, but of the colour choices available, I think W/B seems like the most likely choice. I know Wizards said they wouldn't let "variety" get in the way of planeswalker colours, but I still don't think they're make both Lilianas, Sorin 1.0, and Sorin 2.0 all mono-B.
Can we at least agree that it's more likely than not Sorin will be at least partly black, and of the possible colour combinations, white is more likely than say, blue or green? I won't deny red as a possibility, but that seems to be reserved for the bloodthirsty/lustful vampires and Sorin's too classy for that.
Basically, if you want to open packs to get cards for Standard and Modern, the simpler approach is to just buy all the singles you need and then set some money on fire to make up the difference.

This makes sense to me, especially when you point out that we would have three mono-black PWs in Standard if the new Sorin was himself mono-black. On the other hand, wizards could merely be doing this to add the flavor of dark times settling in.
Speaking of which... Which artist made that beautiful playmat art?
I think Jason Chan did the playmat

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.
So, the second piece is really interesting me. Sorin of course is a vampire, and we can tell by the third piece's eyes that she is most definitely a vamp (also, refer to the clothing style, it matches up a lot from the bits we've seen on the mothership. It fits the clothing that these vamps like to wear), but if we look at the second piece, she's not quite wearing the style of clothing that vamps wear, and though we can't see her eyes to either confirm or deny that she's a vamp, she just doesn't have the mannerism of one. Her clothing's definitely not gothic-lolita inspired, it seems much more ...medieval commoner-ish (obviously tailored to draw a lot of attention from the male audience)
In looking at the second piece, think of what immediately comes to mind in looking at it. For me it's more "this kind of reminds me of that one girl I dated. She was kind of wild". It gives off a mood of wildness, wildness that could easily be unleashed. Looking at the colors of the art, the background's saturated with green, while the girl's clothing is red as well as a light being cast upon her.
Now think of the people of Innistrad. Innistrad's a cold plane, so they make sure that they dress warmly, and with the great deal of religious influence, who (other than vampires) dresses like that? Also, who would feel a link to wild things greatly enough to be able to play around with a rather large snake confidently? The psychology of this art seems to say that this girl goes against the norms. She's a rebel, she's outside of society, and she's close to nature.
I believe that this second piece is a depiction of the werewolf legend that we're pretty much guaranteed for this set. From the Planeswalker's guide to Gavony- "The forest has become particularly dangerous now that the infamous werewolf Skaharra and her Leeraug cohorts have moved to the area." I believe this art is indeed of Skaharra.
The Sorin art looks kinda dorky, and his face looks...off. But, I'm glad he doesn't have the bloody drool like he always seems to have in his other arts.
The second one is too dark for me to judge. It just looks like some girl with a snake.
As for the third one, her cinched waist and Lady Gaga-esque makeup look weird. But I LOVE the colors. Kinda reminds me of the colors used in the MBS Phyrexian Rager art.

The deck box art is good, but doesn't really stand out.
The Sorin art is pretty cool though, and finally they left off the stupid "hey look, I'm a vampire!" blood running down the side of his mouth.

Is that Sorin art an Argyle?
The deck box is.

Kiki-Jiki does the sloppy swish.
That does look like Chan's work.
Why were/are you against Sorin being W/B?
If that's the case, he's my second favorite artist after Mr Argyle.
As prompted by certain threads on the forums, I'm now certain that the planeswalkers in DGM will be.... Ral Zarek, Morsel of the Firemind.
Also, I don't think the sword is the bloodletter. It's the same sword he has in Sorin's Vengeance.
I highly dislike the third art. It just looks trashy to me.
EDIT: Well, trashy is the wrong word to use. Let's try...just not appealing to me.
