The art stands out to me quite a bit. The human is quite clearly cell-shaded, isn't she? That, plus some of the subtle lines on her outfit suggest a typical Anime style. Have we had art this clearly distinct before? Sure, everyone called the Memory Adept an Anime Jace, but he was actually shaded, etc. This looks like it could have come right out of a manga.
I'm not complaining, because I actually like the artwork. The only problem I have with this artwork is that the hair really stands out against the background. It looks like they were drawn separately, then smooshed together, and in this case, her hair could surely have used some shading? It seems like it's supposed to be round, but it looks flat instead. It really just looks to me like the artist took an eraser and scribbled the hair section out, but forgot to re-add it at the end D:
Anyways, to reiterate my question- have we had art that is so distinctly cartoon-ish before?
The problem is the set's religious tone. Female monks are not associated with a very Christian-influenced church. Nuns are, but not monks. It's just a flavor clash. It's like having female monks/mikos in Kamigawa called nuns, since they clash with the Shinto/Buddhist religious imagery.
Yeah, but we also have had female priests in Magic as well... there are Christian sects wouldn't like allow for that either.
Besides, Innistrad has a church. Christians aren't the only religion to have angels and churches and such... this is a fantasy world.

It's not about realism so much as just making the world much more consistent in its flavor.
You know there are monks in western religions too, right?

It's more that Innistrad's visual style seems to be based on Germanic Europe with some Gothic folklore. The Church of Avacyn takes a lot of design cues from Catholicism, from Tricorn Pope to the church in Endless Ranks of the Dead.
Still, it's not that big of a deal, and the art is really pretty and unique. If this is "anime-styled", it's a thousand times better than the Jace vs. Chandra art.

Yes, but those monks are male. Those who live a monastic lifestyle and are female are called other terms.
I can't recall whether there are priestesses in Innistrad, but if there are, good point.
