Not entirely. There's suspend as an ability that has cards with counters on them in exile. Plus Lightning Storm, which could have counters while on the stack. It is however the first time that a card keeps its counters while moving from one zone to another.
The important part is that the counters move from zone to zone. This is really strange. It means that, just as an example, eventually this will not be a target for Reveillark, even though it begins the game that way.
Another question; If I have Skullbriar, then I put 6 +1/+1 counters on him (somehow), and then my opponent kills him and I elect to put him in the Command Zone. Then I play Doubling Season, and Skullbriar comes back into play. He'll come back in with 6 and then get another six, won't he?
In an eight player game, is anything good? Don't you just sit there countering combos until someone genesis waves for 42 after all the blue players tap out fighting over a bribery?

I don't think so, but I could be wrong.
It says on the card that the counters never actually leave him, and so I don't think he CIP with you adding them on.
I would be VERY surprised to see that big guy not be a legend. I mean he's as tall as a frickin Eldrazi and was the preview image for the Commander announcement. While he may not be one of the primary legends in the boxes, we still have a couple more dual-color legends to go through.
No, we don't. We have these three, plus Nin, the Pain Artist, and Basandra, Battle Seraph. We've seen at least partial images of every single one of the new legendary creatures, and that art isn't among them. From that, the next best conclusion is that it is a nonlegendary creature, probably WBR as many initially guessed it was.

Oops, my bad.
In that case, Wizards....you confuse me sometimes most of the time. I won't even bother asking why you chose to use a non-legend as the preview image for a legend based set.
While these are all exciting, I'm confused and disappointed by one choice. Why did they make Ghave the :symb::symg::symw: general, and not Skullbriar?
Skullbriar being the wedge general would allow players to use all of the zombie cards in :symb::symw:. Ghave makes much more sense as :symb::symg:, and I'm sure more people would be excited by a Zombie general than a Saproling one.

They chose the art because it is EPIC. :D. Though you are right it is a little odd.

Brian Tinsman, Set Designer can only be cast during the third set of a block.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who sees the Skullbriar guy having fantastic synergy with that Karador, Ghost Chieftain fellow? In fact if you somehow found anyway possible to give it double strike it becomes a threat you cannot ignore for long. Even if it struck once that is still three becoming twelve total damage the next turn it gets into the red zone.
Also that new WB Vampire also has fantastic synergy with the Ghost Chieftain. Sacrifice something moderate in size, like a power 3-5 give. End up with a 8/8, to 10/10 flier that is not just a true terror in the sky but a source of almost constant source of creatures dying with Karador out.
I like drawing cards, edric is pretty sweet. Skullbriar is awesome as long as he gets some early hits in. I hope they try to incorporate that mechanic in future sets.
About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
I agree. I was excited. But he's still like a Propaganda type effect, but in a rewarding way instead of punishing. But, seriously.... What the hell Volkan Baga? That painting doesn't make any sense to me and I am quickly growing tired of your neoclassical rigid figures and the lighting that screams "Hey, I posed in a studio with 3 lights coming at me from 3 directions!" I know they love this guy, but come on! A UG spy master shouldn't look like the uptight reject from the Architects of Will. /rant
That neoclassical portrait style actually makes a lot of sense to me as an illustration for a legendary creature. I could imagine it framed on a wall alongside other famous and important individuals of Trest (wherever that is).
I like skullbriar the most.
For me it´s another clue that Innistrad is graveyard based.
With the possibility to have counters in the graveyard, the designers have alot of design space available.
He's actually a card that I would love to see in 'Block' print. The concept and mechanics on the card are really fun and interesting, yet so damn simple. It's a wonder they (or anyone else that I've seen) haven't done anything like it before.
I know for a fact that as long as they stay under $3 a pop, I plan on grabbing four of them for casual fun.

Interesting note here, based on card numbers it looks like there's at least 45 gold cards in the set, likely more, with 60% of the set being mono colored and the rest being gold/hybrid cards, lands, and artifacts.

It hasn't been done because having multiple cards with counters on them in your graveyard is a pain to keep track of. By printing him here, the vast majority of play he'll get is as a Commander, which keeps him out of the graveyard and in the command zone, where keeping counters on him isn't a problem. On a normal card, in a normal set, the bookkeeping involved would be unacceptable.

... I'm having trouble deciding if narcissism is a green trait or not.

Didn't really think of that at first, but now that you mention it, that would be a bit aggravating... which is a shame because it's a pretty damn cool ability in my opinion.

Our friendly neighborhood counter hoarder is going to cause quite a number of rules confusions. For instance, if he has a feather counter from Aven Mimeomancer, he still won't keep his birdiness changing zones because he becomes a new object, but that's hard to grok.

It might not be Green but it most definately can be part of Blue. How many blue characters in the books are narcissistic, I can think of several (Tezz, and Bolas spring to mind).

Skullbriar looks to be an unfun general to play against. He's going to be incredibly balls-to-the wall, all or nothing. If you're blue, bounce and Spin into Myth wrecks his game plan. If you're not blue, dealing with him will be such a pain. At least he's not red/green so we don't have silly multi-attack phase shenanigans.
Edric is looking great. I love Ophidian effects. Actually, I just like drawing cards for free.
The BW vampire deserves more credit. Instant-speed pump on a beefy flying lifelinker is very scary. Oh, and he is instant-speed, manaless removal. And he hits for general damage. He is easiliy one of the best BW generals imho.

As long as you're not going to play him with graveyard order matters cards I think he's fine. Sure he'd be a headache for bookeeping in a tournament setting, but that's a non-issue with him. Just makes me sad that you really can't play him with Ashen Ghoul and the like, or at least not if you want to have fun. But that's enough of my complaining, he's still awesome.
