Quote from oranges2 »
This guy, would either eat up several turns worth of mana to get a slow permanent that relies on your already have some board presence (after wasting said mana), or dies without generating any advantage.

It happens, my post came off pretty rude like and i didn't mean it too... but I want to see the silent reserve (read rage) in a blue/black mages eyes when i cast said cards.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
Oh yes, something to keep in mind if someone's using a Ceta deck. Guided Passage is not, strictly speaking, a search card. Meaning that it still works. So, if you managed to incense at least two players with Stranglehold, and one of them has Intet, Riku, or Animar as their commander, don't be surprised if they cast Guided Passage and have the OTHER ticked-off player do the choosing...
Being a heavy black player, this card will get annoying. That being said; I absolutely love it. This card is going in every deck with red as a primary color from here on out. Total hoser, and I will happily down in the tears of the ramp/combo players.
But I am SHOCKED that they would use a strong, one-word name on a Commander-exclusive card. Maybe that's a sign that it'll be printed in some future Standard?
I would be stunned if this didn't show up in an expansion (or even a Core Set) some time down the road. The effect is simple, the flavor is perfect, and the power level is just right. Another excellent piece of work to come out of this. These might even be better than the Planeswalker Duel Decks, and those are some of the best pre-cons since Urza's Block.
I like it that it is not a Commander specific (no mention of commander or anything)... yet this card truly fits the Commander format. I applaud the design. Combo searching decks will have races on who can tutor and play this first!
Great flavor also.. name, text.
Finally I like that red is given more rule setting cards... it makes sense that rule setting is not limited to white. Rule setting should be in any color, as long as the rules follow the color's philosophy, or foils its enemies.
To Combo/Search General players: Don't whine. If you're red, you should be using this card unless you're not fighting other search decks. If you're not red, you should be packing enchantment removal in one of the colors that actually have it. It's not like this is the only dangerous enchantment around.
If Stranglehold wrecks your deck, congratulations, you have a weakness in your build. The guy playing it certainly isn't going to stop using it if it works at killing off one player. There's two solutions to the problem: Change your deck to actually have some answers, or deal with it.
The best players will be those who have no problem with this card, as enchantment removal is necessary in a format with Zur.
Fetchlands: It's not like the fetchlands are suddenly going to become any less powerful because of a 4 mana enchantment. The Shocklands are still used when they die to Ruination.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
