Why?
Then again, why?
Your last two statements make no sense. You do realize that you'd play Pyroclasm or Ghostly Prison only if you needed to, right? You didn't completely overlook the point that you're supposed to use those only if your strategy backfires, right?
Only a fool would play either of those when their game is stable and Kazuul is alive and well.
Again, you're being extremely overcritical. EDH isn't Legacy. You don't need to scrutinize quite this harshly.
It's not an amazing card by any standard. It does, however, seem fun and interesting and forces people to interact, rather than having the combo player jerk himself off in the corner for 10 minutes. Wizards is trying to push for multiplayer interactions. Also probably won't be broken easily without having to setup some ridiculous board. Skullclamp + Tokens is still pretty good last I checked though.
... I just realized what makes this bonkers.
I play 6 man games often.
One night, I decide to sit to the left of the hoard of notions combo player everyone hates (t4/5 pestermite kikijiki win with counterbackup all the time).
"So, does it resolve? Alright guys, lets kill him!" Politics are easy in my group, so everyone pays, and they all hit him with their tokens. He dies before his next turn even comes.
Its damn stupid is what it is.
Not competitive.
But not fun.
It'll just piss off the player who was winning and suddenly finds himself dead.
I'm pretty sure this is in the RWU hug deck. It fits well. And yes, I have certain degree of confidence that it's a hug deck. I certainly like the card, unlike the masses. It really creates a political conundrum.
It's politics pure and simple. This card isn't here to play when you're gonna make a target out of yourself, it's for getting the board to rofl stomp the guy who already made himself a target.
And in doing so, may be kicked out of the playgroup that prefers to play cards like Alliance of Arms, or find themselves being ganged up on in every game they play afterwards.
It depends entirely on the nature of who you're playing with. Commander is a format that has a fairly high number of people who'd rather not play combos like the above and act more casual with their deckbuilding and gameplay. A card like this is terrible amongst a playgroup who does like to optimize and play to win as efficiently as possible, but those aren't really the majority in this format. So, no, this card isn't for you, but for the many other Commander players who like the sort of gameplay you don't.
Everyone talks about someone being "kicked" out of the play group. Like seriously? So instead of just making better decks you'd actually KICK a player out from your group and ostracize him? Sounds like I'd rather play with the guy who got kicked out cause he's not a sore loser.
Yea there are ways of playing casual and not comboing off and having fun and still have a good deck for sure. And yea casual is slightly more popular than competitive, even so, if you look at this card and think it's a power house at all you'd be wrong, it's a "fun" card that doesn't actually do anything to the gamestate making it a bad card if you want to win. You are playing 100 card singleton, are you really going to fit 10 cards that only work with one card in your deck? So that you have 10 dead cards unless you have that one other card? Sounds like the wrong move to make. Yea it's a politics card in that you gang up on the person. But spells are better than creatures, so why not ACTUALLY stop the person instead of generating tokens for them to use? It just seems like one of those bad group hug cards that yea if you like it go ahead I wont complain, but the objective is to win the game, and that's what I'm going to do, if you get a sore bumb from me beating you in the face with Captain Sisay, or some other competitive deck then stop complaining and do something about it.
If you can't kill the artifact mana accel a combo player has *4 of 5 colors has massive amounts of this* then your deckbuilding is at fault not that player who combo'd off.

After a bunch of amiable, diplomatic talk about how it's beneficial for everyone to pay a bunch of mana, Massacre Wurm trolls everybody to death
Because massacre wurm is essentially a dead card otherwise? Like if you aren't killing 193456184598 tokens with massacre wurm you then it's like meh.
Like you might kill a small general, or maybe their solemn? Like the card doesn't seem good, putting meh cards in decks to validate other meh cards is a bad idea.
I just noticed something that surprises me about this card- It's the second new white rare. Monocolored rares? I thought more "rare slots" would be filled by gold cards. Maybe the enemy legends are all we get on that front. Still looking forward to cute new uncommon and common gold cards though.

Feel free to tell me yours!
unsure as to why they chose this as a preview card (probably the new mechanic? & if so maybe there are more useful examples?), since it seems kinda disappointing compared to what we have seen so far (geeze, a rare no less?)... agree with above poster, shouldn't the rare slots be filled with something more playable/ useful? (gold cards come to mind!).
my main concern is that there are only 51 new cards total, 15 per deck, are they going to waste design/ deck space on cards like death by dragons & alliance of arms?
on the other hand, this is their first attempt at a new format, its all a work in progress, & you must start somewhere.

Depends on how you look at it..personally I think these two cards are awesome and I hope there are more like them. Multiplayer Fun Cards are what I, and I think others, want in an EDH PreCon.
The whole reason I started playing EDH was because I wanted to play for fun again, same reason I hear from alot of the people in my local area, to not worry about building the "Best" deck but to put something together that is fun and play multiplayers FFA games.
So far I have loved every card they have shown, I can't wait to pick these all up.

I'm right there with you. This card is probably not "good" in the sense that it will help you win the game once it resolves. Sure, it might, but it's all about changing games states. The idea of sitting at a table with three-five other guys that all have 10 1/1s appeals to me.
i actually agree with what you guys are saying, & i actually like the new mechanics & ideas, unfortunately, the spikes & competitive players are forcing the "arms race" into full gear now at the LGS.
setting aside all the things already argued so far about this situation, it can't really be helped, why, because they can't help themselves...
its just a shame though, because a lot of these new cards may not "make the cut" when it comes to competitive players. yes, EDH should be a casual format, but its not really played that way around here anymore...
furthermore, the new players coming in are feeling like they are forced to play at a level reserved for more competitive players, where the words cutthroat & grudges come to mind. forcing many card choices that may not have been considered otherwise... (or may be considered "too often")
i assume its not an issue for small playgroups, but the bigger group you are in, i guess these things happen. hopefully, things will iron out eventually.

idk is anyone mentioned this but Netherborn Phalanx could be terminal following this. its got a lot more utillity than the wurm.
but I think this deservs alot more credit, its great anytime the table is focused on one player (punish hated combo decks well setting up your own...i"ll be good well it lasts), and with all the pump effects avalible (2 new on-colour legends come to mind), i don''t think its unreasonable to be able to be able to come out of this with a huge advantage

I can see this card making Legacy Tokens an actual deck. I mean, sure, your opponent gets the same number of Tokens, but we all know that yours will be bigger.

Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
And then no one else pays any mana for it. In this case, why not play a token generator that only gives you tokens?
Mother of Runes, for one. Maybe even Glory.

And you might have teammates that could pay some for you, as well. Or some other players that need blockers.
