so, after yesterday's FNM formats announcement, this promo seems a lot better.
Note, better doesn't imply good.
I personally like it though.

I have to agree. I know that I base where I am playing MTG that week on the FNM foils, because the place that doesn't have foils to give away has slightly better prize payout.
To some extent I think WotC is missing a chance to really drive up attendance by offering the occasional rare staple. Imagine if they had a special super fnm card for one week that was alternate art Karn or Sword of War and Peace. Imagine how many more people would play for a special Stoneforge or Precursor Golem. Stuff like that could really reward players for investing in expensive staples and help brick and mortar store buff up their attendance numbers.

Yeah, this baffles me as well. I'm not a regular event attendee but if there's a really interesting promo to win (like Game Day BSZ, etc.) I'll go. I know that a lot of people do this as well. So is it really that difficult to choose popular cards as incentives to come out on friday? As it stands they produce some decent uncommons, but if they were popular rares...
I am with the camp that Inquisition of Kozilek is a great choice right now. It's trending heavily and just a superb 1-mana discard spell in general.

Precursor I could see; the others are ridiculous. It's mad enough that they had Wonder as an FNM promo once. Good cards would be cool and all, but let's not lose our minds here.
For those of you who are saying promo quality doesn't affect tournament attendance, your area must be vastly different from mine (speaking as an alternate TO for my store). When Bloodbraid Elf, Wall of Omens,Qasali Pridemage, Krosan Grip, Everflowing Chalice et al were promos, people showed up in droves. We could never get more than 12-15 for Artisan of Kozilek or Ancient Ziggurat.
While a bad promo might not drive people away, a good one surely attracts them.

Power 9 Pro - A Magic Company by Magic players for Magic Players. Come check out the Dragon's Egg, the latest in deck storage technology.
For those of you complaining, they don't only print the promos for standard, they print them for extended and legacy players too. for example spell stutter sprite. Rhox war monk is a popular three drop in legacy. that is why they've made him the promo, if you dont want yours, ship 'em over to me lol!
i like the art on this card better than the original. i personally didnt like this card from the beginning but this art is awesome! ill take 4 of those! probably just one for an EDH deck since i dont really play extended or legacy. this card was competitive in T2 constructed and limited. i bet this is more of a gimmick to hype up the commander decks. think about it. oh i bought a WUG commander deck and i have a cool foil warmonk to put in it! lol.

I think uncommons are fine. Inquisition is pretty much case in point why. $4 uncommons as a promo will be something players are willing to play for. If they do Mental Misstep they'd probably flood my LGS.
There are some more like Sensei's Divining Top that'd get players and tie in nicely with the commander release too. Maybe wizards is just afraid they'll get people taking advantage of of the promos and throwing them on Ebay immediately.

People throwing things of value on eBay to sell has existed since eBay, selling stuff, and money have existed. It shouldn't be a deterant to printing good cards. I don't play standard... I'm not a gold hording dragon or a millionaire, so not always printing standard cards is nice, and I have a chance of winning one when playing FNM draft/sealed. I have no idea why wizards is so F'n afraid to make a 10-15 dollar card into a FNM promo.

I meant that there were some people reporting fake events just to pocket the foils and make money off them. It's just not something they want to support.

Still, that's only a hand full of people in a huge group. There's always going to be a few douche bags to bend the system over for money. It shouldn't be wizard's deciding factor over printing a card everyone already has 20 of then one not on the stupid reserved list everyone would benefit from having a shot at.
Example: wizards make 0 dollars off top right now since that set is not in print. The secondary market makes money off it. They print a FNM top and attendance goes through the roof. That means more packs are needed for draft/sealed, more price support is required, and more people buy packs, thus requiring the store to order more cases that month. when they print silly elephants that love making pizza, it makes it less enticing to show up and play.

This,
Exactly to be true, like my TO has awful prizes and always has, like really really bad but at least gives out bunches of promo's at the end of the day, the problem is... These promo's BLOW CHUNKS. Like I'm not sure of a single player playing artisan in his EDH deck. *let alone the art might as well been the EXACT same thing as the original card* Hawk was a VERY SMART move on their part as was chalice. But A worse art Rhox War Monk? I wouldn't actually be "upset" by this if the card had a ******* background... Like WTF?
@ Kuro
Exactly that's why player rewards is gone, but every other agreement to make stores money is in full effect such as the reserved list, now I don't want to make this forum about it. Just to relate it to the fact that WotC still loves stores MOAR than it loves it's player base and that's for sure.
