This card is just so good. I can already see, almost, every deck running at least 2 of these in the sideboard, and a lot of them just running them in the main board for funzees.
Now I get to have my Valakut blown up with an Edge on turn 4 and all of them being taken away on the same turn.
Well, I was hoping we'd see some combo decks coming soon. I was figuring that Memoricide was a prelude to some sick combos, and then the Mirrans get unlimitedmanawin conditions all locked and loaded for block constructed, and now they print another hoser.
Lots of hosers, still thin on combo compared to 6/6 fat, weenie rushes, and walkers. Unfortunately the hosers are also good against noncombo cards and so you face splash-damage.
Ah well, looks like I'm still not playing standard. *tinkers around with kitchen table decks*
Hoses Squadron Hawk. Not that great but still good I guess. You still have to spend two cards to prevent them from getting Ancestral Hawk online.
I haven't played much standard magic at all, nor have I studied the decklists extensively, so I'm pretty much asking for clarification from anyone here. The lists I saw ran Hawks and Stonefore, with the premise of always having a way to swing with a sword. However, it seemed like the sword was extremely unprotected. Mana leak and spell pierce won't stop a key naturalize or Revoke Existence. Isn't the core of the deck really just planeswalker control sporting Jace and Gideon, while distracting their opponents with numerous armed birds?
If that's the case, then what you really should be worrying about are the planeswalkers. As I said, against the decks running mana leak and spell pierce, you can just naturalize the sword without too much argument. It's the planeswalkers that will kill you.
Am I correct in this analysis? Again, I haven't actually played against the deck.
WOWOW so good, this card is pretty insane. Good thing it's a rare so it won't be that expensive! Colorless answer to High Tide, Dredge, and tons of other decks...
Umm, wow, saying Sayonara Vengevine. You are going to suck now

Yea, those are MTG Bars. What can I say, I am a dork
I'm also pleased to see that the symbols are more brightly colored than they appeared to be on the scanned cards. I'm not sure how much difficulty someone with colorblindness has telling apart the colors of regular mana symbols without relying on the picture, but at least someone with average vision should be able to tell these apart from across a table.
It has to be said, How is this not Mythic? Instant speed I remove your biggest threat card after I kill it dead for 1 black or 2 life, WITH ANY COLOR.

Normal speed Extirpate nice. But I'm groing a little tried of the block having a few of these effects (Extirpate is not This, Memoricide the new Cranial Extraction.)

Because Wizard's doesn't want people desperately searching boosters for a non-creature, non-planeswalker potential-tournament staple?
Same reason they put Day of Judgement at Rare...and kept the M10/M11 duals at Rare. On occasion we'll get something like Lotus Cobra at Mythic...but at least that card had "Lotus" in the name and the fetches, guaranteed to maintain value over a longer period of time, were regular rare.

Probably because this is utility in the extreme. Any color can play it, and it serves a function that most decks will want, even though it doesn't tie in to a killing strategy. You play it to help make your deck work. Maro said he wouldn't print utility mythics. Lots of people have said that hasn't been upheld, and a lot of defenders have said it has. I think even the most stalwart defenders would have a hard time claiming this isn't utility.
The only other reason is that there isn't a heavy flavor tie-in here. It doesn't seem like an epic spell, especially for so cheap. It's just powerful, not particularly splashy.
Not excited. My main problem with this card (in Standard) is that you still have to deal with the first copy, or you have to Inquisition or Duress it away. Basically, this means you have a 1-turn window to hit a Stoneforger if you want to Extirpate them all, and your opponent has to have it in their opener and not topdeck it.
If not, you still have to deal with the first copy. You still have to deal with the first Jace, the first Stoneforger (which finds the first Sword), the first Primeval Titan, the first Tezzeret, etc, which is probably difficult enough to make this card bad.
The card isn't terrible, but it's not exciting for Standard. It's a bit more exciting in Legacy where it means that Fish can all of a sudden play a card that beats up on Dredge at instant speed without having to broadcast it in advance. Outside of that capacity, though, it's not exciting to me.

Wow.... they just broke ever format in the game with "free" extirpate. It's like force of will forEvery graveyard based deck, and combo decks will have to look out for this card. Playing against High Tide combo in legacy? Turn 1 Thoughtseize their High Tide, surgical extraction it out of their graveyard, hand and library and watch them cry as their deck does absolutely nothing.

Take a mechanic from the pre-mirrodin era, and a mechanic after the mirrodin era, and create a card that flavorfully melds both mechanics.
ITs going to be a staple in every format, especially in sideboards.
God this card with Pyromancer's Ascension and Call to Mind. Just ouch.

Thats not really single handedly, tec edge and extraction.....thats 2 hands
But in all seriousness this card is amazing, Mono black just might be on the rise in the next year(prays for a 4cmc good mono black planeswalker).
I am alittle shocked that not only are 2 of the buy-a-box promos os this block are black but both are about exiling cards.
