Proof that this was a good decision from Wizards:

Nice work Sheldon. These news are so good. Finally I can get into EDH.
I concur.
I, for one, welcome our new EDH overlords. I’d like to remind them that as a trusted blogger at MTG Realm, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground MTG caves.
Just kidd'n of course - I think that the roll-out of this new product (it's a business of course) was done with sufficient tact as to be cognizant of potentially sensitive veterans of this format while encouraging those newer players contemplating tyring this great format an auspicating place to start.

Well, I'm definitely buying whichever pack comes with that giant demon with blades for hands. I've never done EDH, so I'm happy to try at least one. At $30 MSRP, they should be pretty easy to find for $20 a pop.
since standard is so expensive and I can't find any one who plays extended any more EDH is my favorite format. I am so glad it's geting some love. Also what's with the wording on that legend?
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.
Jazzed the decks will include 2 new Wedge Commanders each. I hope they have good abilities. The Planar Chaos dragons have to deal damage and the player must pay a cost. This is not awful, but I like cards that have a more immediate affect.
$35 for a casual deck is not bad. It's a starting point for a new player who wants to get into the format without searching decklists and hunting down cards. Buy, play, replace what you don't like, put your own spin on it & make it your own.
Here's to hoping for wedge trilands, or at least enemy duals that cipt or similar...
Also hoping that some of the 51 new cards are 2 colored legends (preferably enemy colors seeing as there aren't many of them floating around either).. Could be possible and fits with the theme of strengthening the format...
wishful thinking? probably.

I just hope they back that up... If these products are unplayable and loaded with cards that are bad for EDH there will be a lot of people getting pretty pissed come June. I am actually really curious how they'll handle a pre-con 3 color deck.

Probably will be similarly built like the M:tGO Commander precons. Pretty good decks that aren't overpowered, but geared more towards multiplayer.
I had no real interest in this format.
Now, I plan on buying one or two of the precons.
I know I am not alone, I am sure there's a few others who would now want to play EDH because of this, especially if they hear/know how big it is.
I just noticed, the article never actually states whether the commanders will be foil. It just says the oversized cards are foil, but doesn't specify whether the regular sized cards are foil or nonfoil. Is there something I missed, or do we just not have confirmation one way or the other?
Nice New generals i mean commanders in some interesting colors. Some reprints and new cards... (i hope there is something more powerfull than that dragons-for-everyone spell). And some good reprints, like volraths stronghold etc. new good lands in wedge colors wil be there definitely.

Wait wait wait, we will finally get some URG precon love? With three flashy legends to play with them? And they're oversized AND foil? Tasty. Sexy. Do want. Right now. I'm not even an EDH player, yet I still want to have some of these decks and play with them just because I love URG colors so much. And, to make the matters even better, my brothers love playing WBR and BWG, so we can buy three of these and have some ridiculous fun together.
As I've already said, I'm not actually an EDH player, so the changes don't matter to me that much. I like the Commander name better, because I'm not a native English speaker, and EDH is a mouthful to pronounce. Still, EDH is much easier to type, so it will still be used as an acronym (like SOM for Scars of Mirrodin, etc). At least we have almost the same word as Commander in Russian. Now, I wonder if we have enough EDH players around here...

Also, I loved the Planar Chaos dragons, and this show of support for the wedges (which are basically the last frontier when it comes to multicolor design, flavor, etc.) gets me really excited. Six months is too long to wait!

These look really neat. Enemy tricolor legends are essentially support for EDH deckbuilding at its fundamental. I really look forward to the RGU combo. Personally I hope Intet doesn't get new art, as I really liked the old art, but the oversized extra cards are a very nice bonus, too. I'm undecided about the new cards. They look like they could be neat, but I don't really feel like extra cards were necessary. They can build those sorts of cards into actual sets, and they already do. But I suppose they had to make new generals, so why not make more cards while they're at it? Pretty cool.
Everyone seems to be assuming that other art is a general. It looks to me more like a Relentless Assault variant, what with all the swords and the armies battling on the ground. Then again, perhaps it's a general with a relentless assault constant effect. RBW seems like a good guess for that, so I suppose I'm in agreement.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I like the new Ghost Chieftain general because he can remain cheap to cast despite recasts. His cost reduction includes the extra 2 recast costs, I think, so if you fill your graveyard enough, he'll keep coming back for cheaps. On the downside, free creature recursions? That is terrifying. I would have liked it to be a tap ability (tap:you may cast target creature spell from your graveyard), but maybe it's balanced as it is.
This is done way better than I expected Commander precons to be. Three possible generals per deck alleviates the "you're going to see waaay more of the general that gets printed in the precon" problem, and if you give more support to enemy wedges then you can do no wrong in my eyes.
There you go telling me how to play and what I do and don't need. So how about the two preview cards? There's nothing like either to substitute in
Sorry for phrasing it that way, but if you aren't willing to drop $140 for a playset of cards (I'm not disparaging that attitude, I wouldn't do it either) then you are a casual player, and casual is more about having fun than running the finest tuned deck you possibly can. There are always proxies as well

I think Magic is a pretty cool guy. He brainstorms every turn and doesn't be afraid of anything.

The problem is that they always have to make multiplayer-friendly cards not be pointless in two-player if they're printing them in a set. Maybe there are some of those in these decks or something.
And a lot of multiplayer-friendly cards require confusing rules text, like Death by Dragons. If it had been printed in Alara, it would just be bad limited filler that confused casual players.
And also, having new cards in the deck gets older players who already have most of the cards to be more likely to buy the decks, rather than just get the generals as singles.
Nothing but good news came from this announcement.
Name change? Big deal. Kind of sucks, but I can also understand it. EDH initially was played with the Elder Dragons. Well that's no longer true, so it makes sense to kind of shy away from that name.
New Cards? Awesome! Precon decks? Awesome! Not taking over? Awesome!
This may be the only good thing Wizards has announced lately after all the crap that's been going on. Lack of 4 color generals... oops commander... is understandable. 3 colors is difficult enough without a lot of dual lands, so adding a 4th just doesn't make sense. But I'm sure in the future they'll think of something.
Now that they're officially supporting it, we can expect a lot of good cards to come out of it. That new general is awesome. The dragon card isn't, though.

Actually, Death By Dragons would be pretty good limited filler at uncommon. It would be a really nice pick.
I personally like the new name change. I recently taught a bunch of people to play magic, and we quickly switched to playing EDH. Its really hard to explain to them what EDH stood for, since they are too new to the game to know what the hell an Elder Dragon is and/or don't get the Hilander reference. Now when I teach people, I can just be like 'Hey lets play this multi-player format called Commander' without any awkward explanations.
I love the fact that they are making new cards, and I love the fact that they aren't sanctioning it. Good move by Wizards all around.

Well, there is Dragon Roost and Dragonmaster Outcast that will get you dragon tokens, and Enduring Renewal, Liliana Vess, Necromantic Thirst, Oath of Ghouls, Revive the Fallen (especially imprinted on Isochron Scepter), Sword of Light and Shadow, Teneb, the Harvester (which is in the deck and legendary, so you wouldn't really want more than 2), and Woebearer for repeatable graveyard recursion.
Sure there are differences, like being permanents or requiring different actions to activate, but they'll work just fine in general.
