So I guess the "something borrowed" that MaRo mentioned was from the OMFGWTFTEHPURPLEMANAS? The purple permanents that were in the InQuest article had a ability/drawback called Anchoring, which was pretty much the same drawback as the Lich. If the permanent they were Anchored to went, so did they.
That said, I do believe he is my favorite card in the set so far.
Or... perhaps Voldemort is just a poorly implemented lich character?
Love the action and the flavor of the Phylactery Lich. Now only if the the token gave the artifact 2 additional cost to target it (to make it much harder to destroy). That would be perfect.
Dragonstorm, Pyromancer's Swath/Grapeshot storm, All-In-Red...those don't ring a bell??? all of which played Desperate Ritual and won tournaments.
"modern" magic theory with it's myopic preoccupation with card advantage has ruined all the kids' way of thinking. in the right situation, it's perfectly fine to burn a few cards (or several) if it's going to win you the game fast.
coincidentally (or perhaps not???), both of today's preview cards show off that part of the game and the concept of risk vs. reward.
Uh, Desperate Ritual was barely played in storm decks, as Lotus Bloom, Rite of Flame, and Seething Song were the primary acceleration. I even mentioned storm in my previous post which you quoted. I know my storm decks.
So while I cannot control you lumping me in as someone who does not understand managing resources, mediocre cards are mediocre cards and that is the point I was/am making about Desperate Ritual (and this new version). Risk vs. Reward? Sure, but the reward is sure small with this one.

Top 8 of GP LA, for reference. both storm decks in the top 8 ran DR x4 in addition to RoF, SS, and Bloom.
edit: in fact, the only U/R storm decks i can remember that didn't run DR were standard decks of the time that couldn't because it wasn't available in the pool.
HELL YES! That guy is sick! Woooo!!!!! (Not at the moment, god no. However, think of him once an artifact set comes out.) The flavor is soooo amazing.
Ritual is decent. Using it in devastating red lets you still do your third-turn Summons + Bushwhacker. However, it also lets you throw out a bolt or a guide, etc. to go with them.
I only remember Desperate Ritual in storm decks and combo decks with Izzet Guildmage. Pyretic Ritual will probably be used by some just because it is the only ritual in standard/under-extended, but there are no longer any bigger combos that it fits in other than just playing spells faster. It has good color-fixing, but as far as acceleration goes it is only about as good as Simian Spirit Guide.
Phylactery Lich has cool flavor, but why isn't it "Creature -- Zombie Wizard"?
wish that thing was black...would be cool have a ritual...sad
the lich is cool though
I think Wizards has shown pretty clearly that they don't want short-term mana ramp in black any more. That piece of the color pie has been shoved down the table onto red's plate.
The whole quibble is that it's not a Wizard. The phylactery flavor is great, but why the hell is a Lich, especially one using a phylactery, not a Wizard?
Yeah, I made a boo-boo. Check the edit I made, it explains why I messed up.
The "all zombies" not only lend themselves to the indestructible beater, but turn 5 Grave Titan into Turn 6 Necromancer's Covenant can be pretty devastating... specially after a Turn 4 Day of Judgment that leaves you with a 5/5 zombie holding onto that everflowing chalice.
T1 Arcane Sanctum
T2 Everflowing Chalice (kicked once)
T3 Phylactery Lich
T4 Day of Judgment then attack through a cleared board for 5
T5 Grave Titan (2 Zombie buddies)
T6 Necromancer's Covenant Swing for 15 damage (9 of which has lifelink) and still have 2 blockers sitting around.
Phylactery Lich, Knight Exemplar, Sun Titan, Grave Titan, Primeval Titan, Cultivate, Sylvan Ranger, Liliana's Specter... there is just so much awesome in this damned set!
Can someone please explain me the flavor of the lich?

A phylactery is a vial that holds a Lich's soul. When the phylactery breaks, the Lich dies.
Also think of it as this:
You store your soul away, this way you achieve lichdom. Which means you possess immortality, which means you live forever. Not all Lichs are undead skeletons, some can still retain how their body looked and be "Forever Young" as well.

Well I guess I'm wrong about Desperate Ritual not being really used. I was on a break from Magic/extended at the time of PT LA and didn't realize storm was being played then.
That said, I do believe he is my favorite card in the set so far.
And yes, casting Chandra Ablaze in T2 is going to be hilarious

Since Mirrodin has Darksteel stuff, I imagine there will be some nifty artifact to toss the counter onto. Voltron lives?

It is a vial used to contain a Lich's soul.

I 100% agree. Amazing flavor on that card but it really should be a wizard. Other than that it is high fives all around.

No, the flavor is perfect on this card. A phylactery is a vial that holds a Lich's soul. When the phylactery breaks, the Lich dies.
Ah, now I get what you're saying. For some reason I thought it had the subtype "Lich." Honestly... I think they should add "Lich" to the subtypes.
I was praying for a ritual in Red to cast those powerful yet expensive red spells. YAY!

I see the LD but how do you play the other two?

What I remember were decks like these:

In an environment where there is a better/wider selection of rituals available, Desperate Ritual does not seem to make the cut.
But thanks for pointing the PT LA decks out.
