i like how they are shaking walkers up with cool abilities and interesting ideas. the elf is great in limited, just help me power out eldrazi. gideon is awesome
Heh, use Gideon's ability when the opponent has only one or two weak creatures. They attack into your fat. Gideon remains unharmed. If you lose a creaturein the assault, Gideon gets revenge. He is a very demanding board presence and one hell of a power house...
I posted answers to common questions and rules issues about Gideon here. If any of it's wrong, post and holler and I'll fix it, but I don't think I made any booboos.
Gideon can very well be this set's Jace/Baneslayer, I know I'll be hoarding the ones I get. Heck, this is a 5-mana White Assassinate that sticks around for some more and still stays out of Bolt range, and that's probably the worst use of him. It's only too bad you can't use him as a blocker (well, other than using his +2, which is kind of like blocking). Turbofog just found a new win condition, methinks.
Treespeaker will find a home in my Warp World deck, and every Elf deck in Standard will run it (possibly Extended too).
lets try to do the most crazy thing we can to a planeswalker creature.
I'm gonna attack, postcombat momentary blink him.... yeah...
I'm pretty sure that his will set him back to 6 loyalty and allows you to use his stuff again.
Gideon is great with Elspeth.
Have some tokens out and use Gideon's +2. They can't swing through.
Or use his +0 and have Elspeth make him a 9/9 flying. Really interesting.
As a player of U/W control, I am excited as hell for Gideon. He is just sick.

Gideon seems really strong. He throws a nice wrench into Eldrazi Spawn decks (assuming there is one) by bringing all those toothless dorks into your team.
Just a (tired) thought.
He'll see play in one way or another.

I'm still waiting for more intellectual planeswalkers. Other than Jace and Bolas, they mostly seem like meat-heads to me. Back in Artifacts->Invasion you hav planeswalkers with skills in artifice and monocles--FREAKING MONOCLES. Honestly, they should just stick a monocle on each walker. I think Sarkhan the mad would look positively stunning in one.
I love it how Gideon's ultimate refers to him as "he" rather than "it". Hopefully the trend continues and we will see "she" soon, so that I won't have to suffer people referring to female characters (notably Elspeth) as male.
I liked this as well. For nondescript cards it should remain "it" but for Planeswalkers it should be gender specific. After all it's not like I walk up to Vess and scream "IT'S A MAN!"
What's wrong with you guys and the Elf? I know Gideon is amazing and overshadows it, but c'mon. Her first level up returns your investment immediately, so you can make your 2cmc drop normally. Sure, it doesn't let you drop a 3cmc like a llanowar, but from so on, she will be vastly superior. You'll either be able to drop really big things starting turn 3 or have so much spare mana that you wouldn't mind to syphon it in leveling her up for a potentialy explosive ability. Her accel is much more reliable than Lotus Cobra, albeit only in green.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
The elf is better than most people are giving it credit for. It's very close to the following card:
Crazy Elf G
Creature - Elf
Tap: Add GG to your mana pool.
1/2
If this was what it actually said, people would be hyped over the card. But it's presented differently, so people don't see it.
He's effectively a 1 mana 1/2 that taps for 2 mana. When you level it up turn 2, it gives you your mana back to go about doing your turn 2 stuff, so it is effectively free to level up. The only difference between the real card and Crazy Elf is that the acceleration doesn't kick in until turn 3.
There is almost no point to leveling it up any further, unless it's crazy late in the game and you're trying to combo out or something.
He actually costs 1GG, for which I could cast Elvish Archdruid I suppose this taps for 2 mana on the turn archdruid would, but still... I dunno, gonna wait and see on this one. Also, Gideon does ooze flavor, and I approve of that.
Don't Gideon's +2 and 0 ability contradict eachother since it's only sorcery speed and until eot...I mean, can someone explain how those two abilities work together?
Also, I keep hearing talk of a 3rd Planeswalker in the mix...possibly Ob Nixilis?

Aaron stated this on Monday that Planeswalkers (only) will have gender-specific pronouns from now on.
his first ability is way to good, and his second is also powerful... but i see his 0 cost ability as a down side, he will be target then for creature kill. but like i said his firs ability is wayyyyyy to good.

You +2, the opponent attacks the next turn, their creatures are tapped, during your next turn you turn him into a creature and attack. The prevent all damage to him is just an extra plus.

Same thing that happens to any other creature. If you creaturize him, he also dies to destroy effects, just not direct damage.
