I feel like im going to be repeating the norm but here it goes:
Lightning Bolt, im disappointed that it is the foil, but i can't complian too much as it is lightning bolt....and its foil =l
Sign in blood: Not my personal favorite, but a perfectly fine choice as it has potential, + the art rules.
Cancel: WTF. Why are we getting this peace of crap as a wasted slot of a free card??? I know wizards has no obligation to make free cards necessarily tournament staples, but this is ridiculous. Like those earliar in the thread, i will be sneding the cancel(s) i get from the next mailing.
Really like the Sign in Blood, Cancel is Meh as always (should be mana leak, which should be in standard) as for Lightning Bolt, its good, but the foils are usually rare, I'd rather they have waited for Day of Judgement. Just personal preference.
Well, as an interdimensional traveler from an alternate universe where everything is backwards, it must be hard for you to adjust to a world where gravity pulls you down, green means go, and Cancel sucks.
No, see, this is not backwards land, you are not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy. Powerful rares turned into full art foils vastly outstrip a common given the same treatment. Even if it is the adored Lightning Bolt. (Although, according to others on this thread, I have overestimated the intelligence, and underestimated the importance of having a "stylin'" deck)
Free, I'm sorry, you mean Wizards just sent you them, and you didn't have to do anything? You didn't have to jump through hoops, travel, purchase WotC product, or play in a tournament? You did something for those cards, you earned them with your loyalty. On the other side of the equation, Wizards has set a standard for themselves: powerful, well liked rares as the foil. When they suddenly betray that precedent, with no forewarning, and to such a great degree, you have the right to be dissatisfied.
My opinion is, unless you reaaaaally like those Cancels, send them back with a firmly worded letter, and ask for another copy of Sign in Blood. If they don't respond, what did you lose? A Cancel, big deal. If they take notice, you will have had a hand in letting Wizards know that their MtG community is not a bunch of complacent nerds fit only to rant in a forum.
You sir are completley correct and very deserving a sig quote and Im sick of hearing how we should be grateful for wizards not poisoning the cards because they dont have to not accidentally poison them
WoTC has absolutely no obligation to give you money for free in these mailings. If the only thing you use MPR mailings for is trade bait, then you're probably not who they intended this program for.
they are intended for tournament players and would be used to aquire cards that are otherwise difficult to obtain a common that is as old as the game itself does not qualify for this
And for everyone who thinks "FOIL, textless Lightning Bolts are a joke" I'd be glad to pick one up to swap into my cube. Just message me and I'll pass along my address.
FOIL Bolt is running $10-$12 US (M10) or $30 US (Judge Promo) right now. It's not Cryptic Command but it's not as worthless as many of you seem to put it. This version should easily be valued at $10, possibly higher during this initial appearance as those who care scramble to get playsets.
FOIL, textless Damnation is a little above in value and the FOIL, textless Wrath of God a little above that. I'm failing to see how this Bolt is so awful.
Ill gladly send you the one bolt I am getting this shipment in exchange for one of your foil textless ***s or Damnations 1 for 1 your choice of which one
I have a proposition for all of you who are pissing, moaning, screeching, and weeping about Lightning Bolt.
Send them to me.
Id propose the same offer to you that I did to Zerin and by your logic there should be no hesitation to do said deal. And I would extend such an offer to anyone else that feel that lightning bolt is an approriate choice for this slot
The bolt is so pretty. But Cancels existence is just pointless. It bothers me to even see it happen, but it just keeps happening.
Of the cards you listed only hypnotic specter has been reprinted in any set beyond its original printing and none of these are common. Lightning Bolt has existed since the days of alpha. There is no excuse anymore for anyone not having a playset of them that wants one.
Overall Im not sure whats the biggest disapointment here: The foil being a common as old as the game itself, cancel being printed yet again despite it being a bad card in every conceivable format it is played in, or sign in blood an otherwise decent card being lumped in with this sorry lot.
Also just because counterspell is never coming back does not mean that cancel is a good card. they should come up with something more interesting for blue as a default counter or something at least playable like mana leak it is completley possible to make the baseline for hard countering be 1UU without printing cancel a hojillion times. I understand wanting counter strategies to be weaker but I cant think of any situation where cancel would be a good choice.
Also early spoilers for Rise of the Eldrazi, M11 and whatever comes next: Cancel. Limited cant exist without cancel despite countering being nigh useless in limited.

Every rarity gets good cards. That means that some mythic rares will be tournament quality as will some commons, some uncommons and some rares. My promise wasn't that mythic rares wouldn't get good cards but that we wouldn't limit the good cards to only being mythic rare.
Bear this in mind the next time a powerful mythic rare is spoiled
Thanks to chaostheory90 for finding this quiz for me
nonsense. Cancel is a successful experiment. You seem to think that wizards unintentionally de-powered counterspells. Counterspells were turned down on purpose in order to prevent the Draw Go decks from existing. Just like LD was removed from viability because a large portion of the player base doesn't enjoy games where the opponent is playing that deck type.
Wizards needs a counterspell to always be there as a foil to combo's but they don't want the counterspell to be so strong that a player can literally do nothing but draw cards and play counterspells until they play their game winning card. UU counterspell was too strong, Cancel appears to be just right.
Just how many times do we have to read this bullcrap about monoblue decks being nothing more than sitting on your butt drawing cards and firing counters at everything, seriously, just because your casual deck packing tons of cool green dorks that cost 4 or more with some bombastic auras to make them the bestest creatures ever gets owned by a monoblue deck doesn't mean playing monoblue is that simple.
And don't bring up CMU Blue from 1998, it's old news, ever since I started playing when Odyssey was around I've never seen a monoblue deck doing what you say and being successful.
Try sitting around and counter everything your opponent plays, and tell me how does it go...
first time in years that i finally get enough to get a foil rare and it turns out to be a LB that I have literally hundreds of.

I just want people who redraft to admit this:
"I can't draft objectively unless I am able to guarantee that I receive at least 3 rares. I am also better than most average/new players so I want to make sure that I get the best rares and they end up with worse ones. I care more about the monetary value of cards than actually playing the game for decent prizes."
Legacy players rejoice we now have 2 cards that go in tempo thresh textless. Now all we need is textless Dazes and stifles.
Dear WOTC: Cansel is unplayable trash, if a combo deck came up and couldnt answer this peice of garbage than it probably couldnt answer a 2/2 for 1 much less a 2/2 for 1 with haste. If your willing to reprint the best burnspell ever printed you should be willing to reprint the most balanced counterspell ever printed (Mana drain is strictly better)
I know its not happening for a long time (untill they print ligitiment fast mana) but I long for the days when blue wasnt the color of vendalken shackles, tarmogoyf, and SS Sprite. Every major defining card that just "goes in blue decks" is a permenant (Save legacy but eternal is special) theres just something that doesnt sit right with me about that blue plays spells, not permenants at least not till its time to bomb the board out.
I would have liked a textless rare like others, but Lightning Bolt is cool. I actually like Cancel, but I'm sure to be pelted for that one.
Burn the witch!
On a more serious note, I adore Sign in blood so I look forward to that a lot. I like Lightning Bolt and the art is amazing, so I won't cry myself to sleep or anything but it is definitely a bit underwhelming for what it is. 20 events, which for me is 20 weeks, seems like it should have more umph. Cancel...I'm a terrible control player so it's not my problem! Bwaha!
Wizards never said that the foil card MUST be the same for all year... Maybe they will move to changing the foil with each mailing as well?
I can't find it now for some reason but it used to say on their website that the premium would be shipped out three times and then be changed. (just like wrath, damnation and cryptic were) Since I can't find that statement anymore it is possible that they have decided to change that. I'd hope that they didn't though as it usually takes me two mailings to get a playset of the foils. The most I've gotten from one mailing was 3 and that was a busy summer of playing.
Ah, now that I see that it's possible that these could stay the same(or is it just the foil?), I'm pretty irked that all of them are commons... I agree, then, that it should've been Maelstrom Pulse.(Or Lotus Cobra :P)
Real quick, from the perspective a pretty casual player but a huge Magic enthusiast: Cancel is fine. You guys are some babies.
...or you might just be a nub who doesn't understand what MPRs are about? It's to support players around the world who take part in DCI-sanctioned play. You know what card doesn't show up in DCI-sanctioned play (unless you're a casual player who's constantly 0-4'n and randomly posting on MTGS), especially at the top levels, which is what most decks are formed around, is quite obviously not the choice of players who support the WotC Network, and is despised by most? Cancel.

Whether it's the same now or not it used to be the foil was mailed three times and the 2 textless were changed each mailing. I doubt that will change.
I was hoping for maelstrom pulse too since we've gotten the premium at rare 3 times now but they never said that it was a rare. They only ever stated that you got a premium foil card. They never said premium rare foil card unfortunately.
Still, I can't complain. They are taking the time (and money) to send me free stuff 3 times a year. I think that's enough to ask already.
...or you might just be a nub who doesn't understand what MPRs are about? It's to support players around the world who take part in DCI-sanctioned play. Cancel.
And you might be the nub who's forgotten about block constructed events. Cancel has shown up in quite a few top eight decklists (main and sideboard) in block constructed events.
Just because a card is subpar to others as cancel is doesn't mean that top players don't play it when it's the best card for the job in a certain format.
They should've made it Maelstrom Pulse, since they kinda owe us for printing Lotus Cobra at mythic. [/ubiquitouswhine]
In any case, I'm hoping that I get a playset of these textless Sign In Bloods, since I have 6 token sets coming to me... that means I have a high chance of getting 3 Cancels and 3 SiBs... but I have just as much chance at getting 4SiB/2Can as I do 4Can/2SiB... I just REALLY don't want 6 Cancels...
(I'm building a MBA deck, and could really use the set of textless awesomesauces.)
P.S. Side note: My comp counts "awesomesauces" as a real word. O.O
I feel the same... at least we are getting free stuff (I can just burn the Cancels). Do we know when this mailing goes out?
It's going out now. (the op apparently got his already) One of my friends recieved his yesterday which means I should recieve mine within the next week. It just depends on where you are as to when you will recieve them. All the points get pulled at the same time though so whatever you were at last week is what they will be mailing you most likely.
Apparently it's most likely going to come in the next 1-2 weeks, so that they can advert the Pre-Releases.
That would make sense, but there's nothing on the Player Rewards area of the DCI that gives a release date of the MPRs. Usually it's a couple weeks before that they're released, and then mailed out.

Sheesh, free stuff is free.
It's somewhat of a dissapointment that they reprinted it as a common and theyre making it textless. At least its a card we know will be used.
Pulse could also have been an option and it has a nice price too. Oh well.
It was a common to begin with.
And a common common too. It would've been different if this were it's first printing (in M10, i mean).
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
