Also, protection doesn't exactly gel very well with the theme of the set. What business does Grixis or Jund have in doling out protection from anything? One is a system doomed to eternal entropy, the other submits to the code of the wild. What concept of protection would either Jund or Grixis have?
Remember that one time long ago, Alara already be a entire plane, some abilities just became forgotten and dormand... (like progenitus?)
Now, with that re-joining, and strange mana flowing into the shards, strange and lost forgotten abilities will be recovered e relearned... protection is one of then...
alara used to be whole. so it makes perfect sense that as it comes together latent abilities to defend against a mortal enemy might be awakened.
i think i'll have to play with/against protection with conflux and alara cards before i get behind your non-flavor point but it has some decent logic to it. protection from a single color is a lot more devastating in an "everyone is playing 3 or more colors" environment than in any other enviroment.
edit: to respond more specifically to your point, jund and grixis are not places you'd expect to see protection in because they've been cut off from certain types of mana and have subsequently become warped. but surely you don't believe that the demons in grixis, for instance, never had any kind of defense against their enemies? or likewise for any creature that once existed in alara and had enemies.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
Cant do an enemy colored protection bear can we? No white/black bear huh? And there will be no shock lands i assume due to the fact that domain requires basic lands and shocks are not basic

Enemy colored bears don't share an enemy color, which is why Allied pair bears have protection from one color, it's a shared enemy. The concept is illogical. And Shocks ARE counted for domain, which is just another in the avalanche of hints and suggestions that they will be reprinted in 11th. There will never be a better time for them.

@ Tsumi-Again i'll point back to Inv block.Their were 3 color spells in planeshift and apoc, granted not as many as alara, and the original pro bears still didn't have much of an impact.Protection dosen't slow the game down it gives your opponent a clock he or she has to beat. Most people don't hold back pro creatures. That would be like useing a Jhessian Infiltrator mostly to block.
And Stillmoon Cavalier is a big douche against esper and only mildly douchey against the other shards.

Having fun playing against 5-color control now? Well, just wait until the last disadvantages of its mana base are removed.
P.S. Don't expect your mono-colored decks to get any helpful reprints like Magus of the Moon or Ghost Quarter, either; 5-color players whine louder when they're getting hosed mildly than everyone else put together when they're getting hosed majorly.

Why couldn't they give the outlanders special abilites based on colors besides protection for x color like flying and lifelink for the UW one, vigilance and first strike for the RG one or haste and fear for the BR one etc...They would have been so much better.
Im not much concerned about power level, it's all relative, though since i dont play block due to the retarded economics inherent in it (buy playsets at a rediculous cost only to see prices plumet to nothing once block and then type two rotates them out of favor), I do like to see new cards add to old interactions, not just be redundant resources. Maybe these have different creature types... ok great, not interesting for what's basically a hoser card (might have some tribal tutoring significance meh)
also these aren't probably good enough anymore for constructed hosing, which means at common theyre just going to create lucksack results in many of my limited games.. (ahwsum!)
If I see one more variant on white knight/ black knight cards with tiny differences I'm going to vomit, r&d do some of that r&d you're paid to do. I swear if I got paid good money to work on the fun part of designing games I'd be a better advocate for interesting than half their teams put together.

Still the original name-color combinations I see. I guess consistent worldbuilding wasn't enough of an issue. Let's try something different:
If I'm right, and Valeron Outlander is the GW one, that means that Vedalken Outlander is WU. Let me clarify the full implications: That means that Vedalken Outlander is prone to Naturalize and Bant Charm rather than... What red artifact destruction is in Standard right now, again?

You can either predict what WotC is planning or be sane, but you can't be both.
Does anyone think they will finally give us goyf back with this set? or do you think it will be still a little while before they give us back goyf (like the dual lands) so that it feels like the format changed?
Not so much anymore. It was said that Core is no longer considered the basic player gateway... So more functional cards will appear in other sets, spreading the love. Why is this good? More room for tasty options in Core! Sure Core will always have unusable stuff, but what set wouldn't? Trust me, I've seen CCGs turn into "20 card sets" to eliminate the collectible aspect and it's not pretty.
Also, I wouldn't expect goyf back anytime soon unless they decide to spice things up once tribal cards rotate... but even then, they admitted it was an "oops" so I doubt you'll ever see it come back.
goyf wasn't THE card anyway, i know you could get an 5/6 +++ mid game and late game, and 2/3 or 3/4 early game for only two mana, but it was only a body, you could chumpblock him until you draw a terror, shriekmaw, eyeblight ending, sower etc etc, and problem solved. Despite of that, if you only gave him a hand.... that's why they won't bring him back yet, the fact you can play 5c decks is the reason, being able to kill blockers, counter blockers, burn blockers is the help he needs. Until we get back to a time where is hard to play a 2c or 3c deck he won't be back.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck *********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like to to occur and validate you.

In standard, yes.
But in Legacy, he IS the card. He is usually 3/4 around turn 2.
^It hasn't been confirmed yet.
Personally I think it's the WU one, since there is art that's likely to be Vedalken Outlander (there's certianly no other creature card that it could be) that depicts it on Grixis. It would make sense that if he's on Grixis that he has protection from a Grixis color (why else depict him there?). Since green is not a Grixis color, he couldn't be the UB pro-green. Or the art department screwed up...
Or maybe the Grixis landscape refers to his color, and he is the UB Outlander, but then you end up with a creature with protection from a color that flavorwise he could not encounter on either shard he was or is on. Or the creative team screwed up...
Lastly, if Vedalken Outlander is WU, the Valeron Outlander could only be GW, which is the exact color combination of Steward of Valeron.
Could be wrong, of course, but we'll see when Conflux goes up in Gatherer.

I disagree, I wish they would reprint more cards more often. I think the game is better with more internal continuity.
