Now that we know that the discard dragon is indeed Malfegor, I'll go on record as saying that I'm very disappointed. I'm not even sure Mal will be playable. The drawback is just too situational to play around without basing much of the deck around him.
Is it possible that you are thinking of him in the wrong manner? To me...forcing your opponent to sacrifice their board is insanely powerful...reguardless of the drawback. Getting a 6/6 Flying body makes this ability rather insane. I can see this in Red / Black tokens as a target for Torrent of Souls. Gives him haste and clears the board for you to win unopposed. It requires some some work but...this guy could be quite good. I think he is the Broodmate Dragon of the set.

The problem with this guy in competitive Standard is that he doesn't always clear the board, thanks to stuff like Bitterblossom and Spectral Procession. He causes sacrifices, which are good against shroud/protection but bad against tokens because the opponent will just choose to sacrifice the smaller creatures. This wouldn't always happen, but it would happen enough that I'm not sure Malfegor is good.
I guess I eat crow for the card not being named Dreadwing.
I guess i'll join the crowd of people underwhelmed by Malfegor. The drawback is too great for what is an unreliable ability. Now if his ability had been "When Malfegor comes into play discard any number of cards, target opponent sacrifices that many creatures" then he would have been worth playing.
The wall looks much more interesting. A constant source of lifegain with a decent sized wall, not the best card around yet I could see it have some use. In my Cradle of Vitality deck for example.

Hmm, both the Valeron (Steward of Valeron and Court Archers) and the Nacatl seem to be more tied to GW than to the other allied pair of their respective shard, though the Nacatl do seem more spread out among all three colors. That would point towards
Valeron - GW
Vedalken - WU
Zombie - UB
Goblin - BR
Nacatl - RG
instead, but I'm not sure how well that sits with me...
Fully agreed on the colors. Valeron is GW, and the rest is thus pretty much given.
Btw, I'd put my money on that Malfegor would be a Demon Dragon. They're emphasizing his unique pedigree everywhere, so I believe they won't miss such an opportunity to print him like that.

I like Malfegor personally but he won't be played hardly at all in standard...although I should build a deck around him that could work but it could be a potentially board sweeping ability I like the fact that I get a 6/6 flying when they have nothing to block with because of his ability

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Alright, to clean up this thread, the wall is a Rare and the other card is Malfegor, the prerelease card, and a mythic rare. I am adding the wall to the spoiler but holding off on Malfegor, as I feel we might be missing something maybe.
Since those cards are nearly solved, I have another nugget to drop.
It seems as though the shards are going in 'defensive mode' as some suggested, as there is a r/b bear with pro white in the set.
I'm in the "wait and see" camp for Malfegor. I sort of like it right now and since Seds stated it's the PR card I have a little more hope. TONS better than that obelisk of alara crap.
Malfegor goes straight into my jund deck, no questions asked. Normally I draw 4-5 cards at a time with Skullmulcher, play 1-2 cards and wish I could trade out the remaining cards in hand anyways. This guy encourages that strategy.
Someone else suggested hellbent which is a solid path to victory but is hard to accomplish and justify sometimes. This guy does that, for me anyways.
If it's mythic and sees print pretty much as is, I'll go on record saying he is a 7 out of 10 on the mythic scale. Playable, not underpowered but not close to overpowered either.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? THIS IS A 2nd PROMO NEXT TO THE CRAPTACULAR OBELISK OF ALARA!?!?
I'm going to go to the Pre-Release and Release Events still, but SHAME ON YOU WIZARDS! Time has shown your choice of Ajani as the first Mythic release card to be spot on. Valuable and fair. Had it been Godsire, it would've been an outrage.
I can't believe there isn't a similar outcry over this. People argue "oh, sacrificing the board is a bomb ability". HOW MANY CARDS DOES A NORMAL BR DECK HAVE IN HAND ON TURN 6? ARENT THEY USUALLY DESTRUCTION/BURN?
Seriously, discard Blightening, Thoughtseize, Incinerate, and Terror. Tokens deck loses 4 Spirits, Faeries loses 4 Faerie tokens, Kithkin lose their Cloudgoat advantage. Reveillark BRINGS BACK TWO BETTER CARDS, AND SOWER OF TEMPTATIONs this guy.
The only reason im still going is to get chase rares people dog early on (looking at you, Figure/Stillmoon/AjaniVeng/Elspeth/HellsThunder)
People, WHY HAVENT YOU OUTCRIED!!!!!!!!

For years upon years, the prerelease card was useless.
We don't expect it to be an amazing constructed staple.
Ajani was not supposed to be the release/prerelease promo...and I don't think they will make a planeswalker a promo again, it doesn't make much sense to.
Figure of Destiny is the only other valuable promo done in recent times.
To note, Malfegor is almost surely a 'Legendary Creature - Demon', not a dragon. Malfegor is not a dragon, correct?

Gee I have no idea why it would be tough to get people to be overly upset around Christmas about something being given out for free during an economic recession. Huh.
Because I'm a casual player? I like Malfegor very much for my hellbent deck. Nice card is nice. You can just wait for the hidden gems of this set and "outcry" after you got some money out of the kiddies that didn't recognize the great cards they need for t2 immediately, unlike you. So there, to each his own I would say.
Edit @ Seds: Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni comes to mind. Korlash was nice, as was Lotus Bloom. Oh, and let us not forget Demigod of Revenge!
To note, Malfegor is almost surely a 'Legendary Creature - Demon', not a dragon. Malfegor is not a dragon, correct?
He's a dragon with the soul of a demon. Oh, and he has 8 limbs!
EDIT: btw, all the outrage about his playability is hard to understand. Mythic rares aren't supposed to be hugely powerful chase cards that take T2 by storm. They are supposed to be flavorful cards with big, clunky effects that most likely need you to build your deck around them to be useful. They are made for the casual crowd, not the competitive players.
you're right overkill. They should have given us bitterblossoms for the morningtide prerelease, and this time they should be giving us a playset of timewalks. because ya know...they didn't just get done giving us demi-god, figure of destiny, and ajani vengeant who is a mythic rare and hence would have been harder to get otherwise. I expect you to lash out by not accepting this card at your prerelease.
The Wall looks solid, not to put a spin on the phrase lol, and its obviously made for Exalted decks since the bonus still triggers the ability. I don't know if it should be a rare, though it has good potential. As for Malfegor I too thought he was a Demon not a Dragon but the ability is playable maybe even outside of limited. By the time you ramp out a bunch of creatures (tokens?) while keeping a 2 or 3 card hand (getting rid of late game lands hasnt sounded this good since Retrace) you clear the way for a big swing while he sits and waits to finish the job next turn. It would be nice and almost appropriate if he is a dragon to have haste but as he is makes him more of a Knollspine Dragon with slightly better ability...

Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.

Dang, when I looked at the title of this thread, I was hoping it would talk about some card called "Malfegor, Wall of Reverence" as though it were some deified, all-powerful wall that had an evil will of its own.
Yep, that's what I'd like to see in Magic someday: a Legendary Wall.
Well, he is rare.
At uncommon it is kind of disturbing for limited, I would think.
Yea, this card would be far too powerful in limited at uncommon if you think about it for a minute, they had no other choice really. If you don't have something to remove it quickly, the lifegain would just get out of hand. I've taken a liking to the card since it was revealed, go go walls!
