[CON] Esper Cormorants

  • #1
A friendly parrot whispered to me about a fellow bird that will be coming out of conflux..

    clue:
    1. common

    2. artifact bird

    3. no other abilities cept flying

    *******************************************************

Espor Cormorants, pretty plain jane, but pretty useful in draft.

    (U)(W)(2)

    Artifact - Bird

    Flying

    3/3

Etherium sculptor FTW? this would be a nice t3 card, followed by Tower Gargoyle. Esper is getting some nice Beatsticks.

It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.

Well I suppose every card can't be as good as the rest. A 3/3 flier on turn 4 isn't bad in limited.

Yeah isn´t that cool and I guess it is a casualty of merging core sets and "normal" sets

Damn... Remember Assault Zeppelin. No more Trample with this guy but... still good in Limited, yes.
  • #8
Should have had at least white Vigilance to make up for the lack of green Trample.

an allied colour cost traditionally gets slightly less than an enemy colour cost, hence just a 3/3 flier, not a 3/3 flier with an ability.

also, stop complaining, a 3/3 flier for four is great.

A 3/3 common flyer for 2WU is going to be a high pick playable for limited. Nothing much else to say about it though, doubtful to make it in constructed even on a block level.

Assault Zeppelin is better, but this bird is not just 3/3 flier. It's an artifact! which will be very solid in limited, can be returned by annoying gargoyle.

I can imagine drafting Bant in the 1st and 2nd pack, picked 1 or 2 gargoyles. Then last pack gives you this solid bird.

    Good in limited.

wait, let me guess. it's good in limited and unplayable in constructed? am i right or am i right?

eh. just seems like a bad tower gargoyle

    1 post...

It looks a bit plain and similar to the tower gargoyle.

Yeah, maybe if just one more person posted that, we might understand Wink

As for the card, it seems alright. I'd definitely pick 'er at a draft.

... which explains why this i common, and Tower Gargoyle is uncommon. Although this is playable even in Bant Smile

If there is a version of Esper beatdown in constructed that skips black and just goes hardcore U/W for the mana consistency, this will be in it.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. Almost every thread I've been in for spoiled cards has this posted several times.

That's because there's only so many cards that can be playable in constructed. I mean seriously, if every 3/3 flier cost 1C, then you'd be complaining about it not being constructed playable because we already have 16 cards in that slot. There are quite a few cards that will make some impact on constructed decks. Quit griping that it's 'only' 15% of the cards.

This seems better in Bant than Esper, in limited, but it is very good none-the-less. I will greatly enjoy Branching Bolting this guy, though. 3 toughness makes it slightly worse than Waveskimmer Aven(if you are Bant), but slightly better in Esper. Besides, if you are playing esper, your opponent will probably feel good taking out a Tidehollow Strix and a ground creature for some tempo and card advantage, but if you come down with this immediately after... 3rd-7th pick in draft.

Great in drafts, 3/3 Flying for 4 is fantastic. Cloudheath Drake is a 3/3 for 5 and he's a pretty solid pick. Esper looks to be getting some nice toys.
Can't see that much use in constructed. Tower Gargoyle is better, this can get cheap with Etherium Sculpters and potentially be 3/3 for 2 mana, but it just doesn't have enough oomph to make it.

This is a fantastic limited creature. The addition of Artifact instead of the magical "Trample" ala Assault Zeppelin is unfortunate from a power level standpoint but makes perfect sense design-wise.

A high pick in draft that is sure to win me some games thanks to the Gargoyle interaction. Not playable anywhere else, but there's nothing wrong with that Smile

I disagree. I think if anything, players will realize how freakin' good Galepowder Mage is. Cool

I cannot fathom why people don't play that card yet. With Puka's Mischief no less.

Guys, the objective of a set is to make it for limited. It's as UK_BTC says.
Expanding, what you want to do, as the guy finalizing the set contents, is put out a set such that (a) limited is skill-testing and decently powerful, (b) some kind of mark will be made on constructed, as in cards will get into constructed decks, change the way decks are played (since they will fight these cards), and also make their own deck (I think a large set has failed if there isn't at least one new deck based on its cards), (c) the set tells a story, as in the parallel world for the Vorthoses, or just people who like the art and background stuff, is there to admire, and (d) new design space is explored - 'holes', or 'accidental gaps' in what we've seen so far, are filled.

e.g., 2UW 3/3 flier I think is something we haven't seen before. Well, obviously not on an artifact. But it's curious to note how this seems like an accidental gap, something that just hasn't shown up yet, even though it "follows all the rules," but now will.
    Tell me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, you'll notice that satisfying (a) is what takes up most of the set work, and most of the cards.
So I really hope no one is surprised when the cards we see are only limited viable.

Cloudheath Drake is a better pick for early in the process of drafting than this guy because 1) it's mono colored, and so at least playable even if you end up not playing much white, and 2) if you do plan on having the white, it's almost a 3/3 Serra Angel.
The best part about Esper Cormorants is that it fits nicely in the 4-drop slot that so many SSS decks are forced to neglect mostly.
So Cormorants might actually help an Esper deck curve out without having to drop their Sanctum Gargoyles until later in the game.

This guy is probably important to WU/x and I'm glad they didn't tack on another ability (although that may just be sour grapes because I don't play WU/x often).

Yes Tower Gargoyle is better, but I wouldn't say this one is worse than drake.
I like it. People thinks in a very weird way about cards in limited. I mean, because it's a limited format, you can't get just the card you want. You must pick what you get and if you're good you'll be able to win the matches.
