Rules question. If this attacks into 1/1, does it get 1 damage through?
Not without trample. The blocking 1/1 (assuming it doesn't have first- or double strike) will be destroyed before dealing combat damage itself. However, the Slaughtermaster will remain blocked and assign and deal no combat damage during the regular combat damage step.
Assuming it's all correct, this is the best Viashino to come out in a very long time, but all things considered that's not saying a whole lot.

you can generally tell the easiest road to victory by how many players congregate on it; and the road of counterspells/control has been the freeway of choice in magic for quite some time.

What I find offensive is not that Wizards is endeavoring to make the game more accessible, but the attitudes of elitists who act as though no one of any age should show their face in the Magic public without first having mastery over the complexities of the game.
I am loving this bad boy! Hope the art is cool. Now to brain storm effective ways to give it trample or some other kind of evasion... While I pump it up!
As it is I think this set is turning out to be fantastic, many very strong cards are emerging, looks like Wotc really wants to provide alternatives to fairies.
I acualy have a 4 color zoo deck if the shock lands come back and I might consider this guy I don't know thought the list is pretty tight, but he is obviously good.

At first I was thinking "Blech, so what," but then I thought more about it, and this could definitely see both constructed and limited play. IF it is spoiled correctly, as has been said. But things like Tower Above and the like can make him really awesome.

People hiss and grunt at Mark Rosewater for the state of the game. Few realize, though, that it is Aaron Forsythe who is directly responsible of the current state of affairs due to negligence as head of Magic R&D and a completely skewed view of the game as a whole.
So next time you want to make an avvy with Rosewater pissing on something, take a deep breath and consider pasting Forsythe's face there instead...
Elegant common, and what limited cards should be- limited uses, but powerful in a niche, and roleplayers in draft/sealed.
I sincerely doubt constructed play- we have a 2/2 Doublestrike for 3 which is a bargain- but limited it's really good with Bone Saw and Rage.
Umm, it's not for 3 its for 3 RorW mana. Slaughter is much easier to play turning the widely known 'do nothing' turn 2 into something worth play. Turn 3 is where you want to have some counterplay prepared.
Idk, that's just how the world spins in my head.

~Intelligence is Bliss; Ignorance is Denial.
Skill is an ability that relates more so to the type of deck that's built and how said player pilots it. It also relates to the ability to assess the board and use the cards available to you in the most optimal way relative to each situation.
When a deck is filled with above par cards and every play is solid, there comes a diminishing need to "think" for the lack of wanting to use a better word.

um.. I think he assumed that all of us knew that it had the R/W mana cost. Regardless turn 2 double striker is good. and the pump makes it easily playable in limited maybe not constructed but it is insane power house in limited.

1 mana make a world difference, especially for a creature with little to no evasion. At three mana, a creature withouth evasion or a very strong effect won't be played in aggressive aggro. Control-aggro and control are another thing though.
I love this guy. I've played a Warrior deck since they came out and this is a solid addition. Its definitely a gameender and another win condition is always welcome.
This is the cheapest double striker ever printed, so that's at least saying something. When double strike first came out, many of us decided that 3 mana would be the absolute cheapest a 1/1 with double strike could have, EVER. Well, we were wrong, of course. But at 1R this guy is a record breaker already. The pump, if it ever happens, is a nice touch. I like that colour combination. Nicely designed card, assuming it's accurate and all that jazz. *cough*
Understand, Dredge is not really a Magic: The Gathering deck. When a card is playable in it, it doesn't mean it's a tournament playable card. It means it's playable in whatever crazy fantasy world that Dredge operates in.
I was hoping for Devour and not the +1/+1. Devour and double sztrike would go sickeningly well together. All in all I like the card, I hope the art is good.
I disagree with Boros Swiftblade and most of all with you. 1R is more expensive and harder to get than WR. And in comment for the 1 extra pount of thoughness is neclectable if you count the pump up ability in.

Tay, that's not evolution. It's metamorphosis. Evolution means descent with heritable modification – individuals cannot evolve, unless they're Pokemon.

While not techincally "cheaper on cmc", Viashino require one less colored mana cost, alas is cheaper than swiftblade in certain sense. For me, is surely cheaper, as i look to play it in a BR deck with a green splash.
does any one else feel that this card is "too strong" for red?
historically, WotC have never printed a 1R unconditional bear for red...now they give them a pseudo 2/2 with a decent ability? .... well, if this rumour is precise, then that would be good

I am NOT the girl in my avatar. Stop hitting on me. I'm a dude, just like you!
Will replace Boros Swiftblade in almost every deck that uses him. Being able to cast him easier, and pump if your manabase supports it (I'm looking at you, Gaea's Might Get There) for two extra points of damage, are both massive reasons to use this guy instead. The only downside is that he isn't a soldier, but nowadays the warriors have better support anyway. So yeah. Awesome card! Especially at common. I can see this thing seriouly screwing up some drafts. ALA-CON-CON could get pretty meaty with this guy... Savage Hunger makes him an absolute monster, Lightning Talons gives him an unbelievable power boost, Welkin GuideMakes him jump over for that last 6-8 points of damage, and the new Elder Mastery is just plain worong--oh and finally, a good use for that third ability on Jund Charm!
Well, I was hoping for something a bit bigger for the double strike to go on, but this guy acually works just fine. Like people have said, it's not that spectacular without outside pump, though. I've tried Hearthfire Hobgoblin in a red aggro deck and he just hasn't been that spectacular. Now, if I still had Brute Force to work with, he'd be a lot better.
Giant Growth doesn't do it for you? You know there's gonna be greed in every deck this guy's in anyway (His ability/Might of Alara), so good old GG is a rompingly good spell with him.
Closer to eight, unless you plan on having five mana on turn three... Also, Savage Hunger makes 2/1 double striker with trample, who can be pumped in future turns. Trample is very, very, important with double-strike.

Not without trample. The blocking 1/1 (assuming it doesn't have first- or double strike) will be destroyed before dealing combat damage itself. However, the Slaughtermaster will remain blocked and assign and deal no combat damage during the regular combat damage step.
