Paleoloth- With the right conbination of creatures this may be a very nice thing. Great late game in any case. L very nice. C probably unplayable by cost.
This is going to be fun in my mono-green ramp deck but I will have to add Woodfall Primus in with it... Destroying lotsa noncreature stuff sounds like fun.
This is a Naya god card to say the least. You play it after your opponent has exhausted their creature removal or what ever, then drop this guy then start to just put it out there. With the 4 drop Mana excel creature this guy is a Turn 5 easy drop. Fatty Green still has a chance.

Paleoloth :4mana::symg::symg:
Creature - Beast (R)
Whenever you put a creature with power 5 or greater into play, you may return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
5/5

the post you quoted and your version are quite similar but your is superior in one aspect: it's reanimate's best friend. the other version had to PLAY the card (if it got countered, i think you still got to gravedig). of course, you wouldn't wanna return fatties to your hand, just stuff that can fuel the vampire hounds. also works with quicksilver amulet?
Does it count itself for the graveyard recursion trigger? That honestly makes it or breaks it for me (5/5 with a free Raise Dead, akin to Deadwood Treefolk.)
Please read before posting.
The original post even says that it doesn't trigger itself.
All really like the interaction of this card. Yay silly evoke recursion!!!!
I do really, really like the interaction of this card with those big evoke creatures!
Unfortunately, this card sucks outside of casual. Why is everyone (except tyler durden) loving it? it is a 5/5 for 6 that makes your NEXT 5-power creature a gravedigger. How great is that? How many 5-power creatures do you plan on playing AFTER this? Could be fun in casual multiplayer, but a joke otherwise.
Paleoloth-Evoke.dec is not going to happen in any sort of constructed competitive environment, but I'd like to see a decklist anyway I guess.
and I know it is a rare, but yeah, it probably shouldn't be.
They are obviously pushing the fatty concept with enablers like this. This may never see top tier play, but it WILL be a topic of discussion because are going to want to break it - it has potential for being grossly powerful. The reason so many people are loving it is because of the POTENTIAL. If it had been costed at 7 or more, perhaps not.
lulz. you've just resolved a 5/5 beast for 6 mana. now you're going to resolve another 5/x beast while this stays in play.
and you'll get a raise dead out of it! as stated, exactly how many 5/x monsters are you planning on playing after you get the first 5/5 on the board? what type of deck loses to four 5/x monsters but not three?
This thing DOES trigger of its own ability. That makes all the difference with this guy.
I hear a 5/5 gravedigger for 6 is pretty sick in limited. In constructed, it might find a home, as 2 Paleoloth's can do the Gravedigger/Sanctum Gargoyle thing of continuously bringing each other back.
Hmm, seeing as how I am a YetAnotherJohhniewithTheOverlyObviousNayaDeck, I like the card. I'm sure I'll see a few stroll across my path eventually.
LOL Tyler Durden. I was pulling my hair out reading the same C+L comparisons again and again. But you capped it quite nicely. Nearly shut the lid on this thread single-handedly except your target audience won't even read all the threads anyways.
I'm not crazy for thinking this guy triggers his own ability when he comes into play, am I? Everyone keeps talking about playing another guy after him... but just playing Paleoloth alone should bring you a creature from the graveyard, right?
He doesn't trigger his own effect by himself, he isn't officially in play to trigger it when you play him. Now if you play ANOTHER after the first is in play it will trigger due to his huge body.
Paleoloth -
Creature - Beast (R)
Whenever another creature with power 5 or greater comes into play under your control, you may return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
5/5
If that's right, it solidifies green as a close second to black in the graveyard recursion department. There's been other examples lately as well.
Overall I don't see it as a staple in constructed, but it's definitely cool and the trigger may be able to be abused in the right combo deck.
As we currently have its ability in the spoiler ("Whenever creature with power 5 or greater comes into play under your control, you may return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand."), yes, its would trigger from it coming into play itself. It hits the table, then the game checks to see if anything triggers from it entering play, and so long as Paleoloth meets all its own criteria (Power 5 or greater? Check!), the game will put that ability on the stack.
This isn't the most direct comparison, but compare Paleoloth to Harmonic Sliver. The Sliver has an ability that gives the ability to all others of its kind, which technically doesn't work until it's actually in play, but the Sliver is still in play long enough for that ability to exist that Harmonic Sliver triggers its own ability when it comes into play.
Also compare this to the likes of Soul Warden. If the trigger isn't supposed to trigger when the creature its on enters play, the word "another" would be present somewhere. The original post does say that it doesn't trigger itself when it steps in the ring, but like I said, according to the wording we currently have on the spoiler, it does.
Either way, either "a" or "another" is missing from the current wording we've got, so it'll need to be cleaned up eventually either way.
EDIT: Naturally, someone updated the first post with "another" while I was busy punching out the next section. At least we're all on the same page now.
Also, I'm tired of people crying "Oooh, this sucks because it costs so much! It'll never get played in constructed!" I'll be the first to admit that I don't know the current Standard environment at all, but costing too much hasn't really stopped a card from being played if it's worth the mana you put into it.
Technically, Cruel Ultimatum costs way more than this guy, yet that card is seeing play all over the place. I also remember one of my friends slagging Tooth and Nail when it first came out, and lo and behold, once Ravager (not the card, the archetype) was banned and Sensei's Divining Top was printed, that card dominated Standard until it was no longer legal.
I'm not saying Paleoloth is the greatest thing since slice bread. I just think it's stupid for people to automatically write it off because it costs more than three mana. The fact of the matter is that a 5/5 for six mana isn't unreasonable, and the ability you get from it has card advantage written all over it. I wouldn't be surprised if this thing found its way into a deck or two, because it's really not as big and dumb as you guys seem to think it is.

No no, the reason it only works on other creatures is because it says it doesn't. If it trigger when a creature comes into play, it would notice itself, because it is in play the moment the trigger event happens. The ability only needs to exist when the event happens, not before.
Refer to the original post.
This information became lost in the Partial Spoiler; I'm rectifying it now.
As for the ability and the relation to black, I think green ought to be the recursion color that does it more often and more consistently, but black has the singly powerful spells that swing the game with it in one moment, and more ways to explicitly try to get the powerful beaters into play that way.

its definitely a win more effect, if they cant deal with a 5/5 vanilla creature than theyre losing already anyway, in which case you'd have been better off playing a lower cc one like the 5/4 for 3 mana, anyhow this is a pretty terrible card, not really interesting either, very low on the imagination scale from wiz r&d, of course not all cards can be good, and this one fits right into the slot where those cant be good cards go.

Like MaRo says over and over again, magic is for everyone, not just the pro tour. Most people will love this card and I'm one of them, it'll never be good simply because like someone said earlier: when do 4 fatties win when 3 don't?
So constructed playable? no. But its not really meant for that, it's meant to make all the timmies in the world simultaneously die of joy. The ones that weren't killed off at hearing about Nicol Bolas anyway.
It's also good card advantage for multiplayer too. Helps you keep up steam.
