Of course there is a difference between the abilities, my stance is that it's just not usually a very interesting one.
I agree- a -2 life to them, +2 life to you would have been better, and they could have replaced the white ability with something like "target creature gains pro color until eot". SOMETHING.
Pretty expensive at 6 mana. However repeatable effects are a little scary, especially creature removal - especially colorless creature removal.
Could be good in an Esper based 5c control deck. Esper tricks would allow you to get it out cheaper, untap it, tutor for it, and recur it if it gets destroyed. Not exactly sure how competitive the engine would be yet, but could do something if it gets up and running.
Far too expensive for competitive play.
Effects not powerful enough even with EDH in mind... It's something to say...
Oh I don't know, Cromat would love this. I'd consider it, but it would be a quick cut if something better came along. One thing, I could see this being an interesting intigration with Fatestitcher and Tezz.. untap and boom boom boom...
Really this card isn't that bad it is about the same power level as staff of domination. Since the only decks that really use Staff are ones that can generate insane sums of mana.
Yep Staff can go infinite and that makes it a lot more interesting. But this has a bit more use in a domain style deck and in limited its ridiculous.
But don't pretend that control decks throw staff of domination in just because of its useful abilities.
Someone mentioned that it would make more sense for the Obelisk to cost 5, since then it would be like using all 5 colors to ask the Obelisk.
But what if there is Barry's Land? Doesn't that allow Conflux to have 6 basics (probably some kind of converged land from the various shards), which would make the Obelisk fit more flavorly at a 6 cost...
Even for limited, it's a little underwhelming. For it's casting cost, you would normally have access to 3-4 colors of mana by the time it hits play. Given the abilities as listed, I don't think the white is strong enough to be used in limited, blue will only be used when you need a miracle draw, and green will be used rarely (how often will it happen that an opponent will fail to block when you'd want/need to get the extra 4 damage? or that the opp will block with something that won't die to the red or black abilities, but will die to the green?) because it's a trick on the table. The black ability shuts down what few regenerators the set had. I'd still be glad to have it in limited, I just don't see 3/5 abilities from it seeing much play; makes me wonder why they bothered adding them.
wow expensive jank in standard/constructed, but quite useful in limited. Omg what is Alara block is this a way of making limited intresting to the masses, cause im not feeling it.
This thread is full of idiots... Lightning Bolt is NOT being reprinted.
Many times has a writer in Wizards said so, because of the plain and simple fact that it's too powerful for what it costs. x/3 creatures shouldn't be able to die at instant speed for one mana without a signifigant drawback. (like PTE giving you a land)
I absolutely guarantee that LB will not be printed in M10, and you can quote me on that.
Now that we know the lifegain to be 5 life instead of 3, DO believe that significantly changes the power of the card.
Think about it. I KNOW its a creature, but in the right decks this helps with removal tricks anyways so no need for persistant chumper. For 1 less mana, u net 1 more life than you would with [card]Kitchen Finks[/card. PER TURN. For one less mana once its all laid down. I know i know costs double Finks to get the thing down. Outside Bant Charm, where's the Artifact removal coming from? This card is gonna be somewhere competitively. Mark my words. Sig it away.

Obviously a house in limited the abilities are all solid(though white should have been Soothing Balm to make it less shafted).
In constructed its very pricey but i wouldn't rule it out...
On the other hand, the red ability is now a Lava Spike on stick. As Smokestack says...now it can kill a player by itself, especially if you combine it with some untappers

I resent this card a little less now with the lifegain being 5.
I'm not sharing your feelings on it being competitive in anything though.
I mean when I play 5 color, I do it to gain access to the 5 colors best spells/weapons. Multicolored cards being the top priority among them. Lightning Helix, Kresh the Devourer, Garza Zol Plague Queen, etc. Using an artifact definitely would smooth out such a deck as far filling deck slots and what not but not in terms of power or consistent/early defense. Which is what I need my artifacts to do in such a deck.
I'll still go with my earlier assessment about this card needing to be a mana rock instead due to earlier expectations from the SoA obelisks.
Well, 5 life is much better and 3 damage to the face is pretty damn good as well. I still wish it costed 5 though. It would be on the verge of constructed playable then. It's still an excellent limited card (less blue than the other colors).

Card makes much more sense now (and is better). Having the black and red abilities be so functionally similar made no sense. Should find use in casual and/or highlander formats but not competitive constructed. Thanks for the spoilage zesty.
If the Alara Format is slow enough this will actually be playable in Control decks. Artifact kill conditions that happen to provide you with board control are pretty good. But as long as Lorwyn-Shadowmoor is in Standard this is just too slow.
A pretty disappointing pick as a Prerelease card since WotC have been helping out pockets a lot by making the best cards in sets Prerelease cards lately. I guess they need to start boosting sales again and giving away the best cards for free just didn't make good business sense.
I can't see how this card would not be Legendary, storywise.
Well, since the white ability is upgraded to 5 life, and the 3 damage becomes "to a player", things seem a bit more balanced. The blue ability now seems the least likely to see play; not because it's a bad ability, but because you're giving up a chance of activating any of the others when you activate the blue.
Obelisk of Alara- It reminds me a fair bit of Staff of Domination(lots of good effects stuck on the one artifact) but the 5 color requirement and the 6 casting cost would probably put it out of contention for constructed(although a UW deck might make nice use of the life gain and looting abilities). For limited it's obviously very strong the best ability is hard to pick but the black creature kill is definitely strong, the white life gain is a pain to deal with, the red player burn can be a brilliant finisher, the green pump is great for protecting creatures and forcing damage through and the blue looter ability is always solid.

is totally characterful in conflux dude....because barry's land is going to be all up in there.
i have deep love in my heart for barry's land. i hope it's in there. i can see why it's a horrible rules headache though. it counts as a basic land but how could it count as a 6th basic land...the entire process of "counting" a basic land is based on identifying the land as a specific type like swamp or forest. so if barry's land is in there it would have to have some sort of type like that and that presents a problem. do you make a basic land type that taps for colorless mana? is it implied any time that land type is on a card that it taps for colorless? that's kind of weird and it would be a drastic addition to the game that would probably never be used again (or only when domain comes back). but they've done some crazy things so maybe they'll do it.
the 5 life gain and red direct damage make obelisk of alara less depressing. i just wish it were a lot more elegant. i was really hoping for something like 4, T: Add WUBRG to your mana pool...except more interesting than that. but same basic idea.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.

Flying
Wait, since when do red and green get efficient flyers?
